Chapter 5 At the Event

If embarrassing people were an Olympic sport, the three of them would have taken gold every year in a row.

Winona's arm was looped around Jonathan's. Every word that came out of her mouth next dripped with mockery.

"It's not his fault. There are a lot of unwritten rules in events like this one. We're here for work, but you're used to the housewife life. You won't be of use here."

Winona would love to meld into Jonathan and be one forever.

The sight only made me chuckle. At best, these people were court jesters.

"The Winsleys invited him and his family, Ms. Wood. I don't believe that includes you. I'd say you're closer to his mistress. If garbage like you can befoul this place, I see no reason why I can't be here."

Winona stomped her foot and tugged at Jonathan's arm like a bullied child demanding justice from a parent. Then the rims of her eyes went red.

"Mr. Shamrock, I'm trying to do my job, but your wife is insulting me. I guess she hates my guts. A shame you got me this gown and the diamond necklace."

Another day, another performance from Winona. She thought showing off like that would be enough to make me lose control and push Jonathan into abandoning me.

Her goal was obvious. She wanted my place at his side.

A pity her tactics stopped working the moment my heart stopped beating for Jonathan.

Of course, she had no idea. Even now, she continued mocking me. "You bought yourself this whole outfit just to come here for free food, didn't you? You should've stayed home with the baby. Mr. Shamrock is working so hard for his family all by himself."

The crowd was starting to swell, but every time their eyes swept over Jonathan and his little entourage, a sardonic look flashed through them. To these people, this was nothing more than a comedy show.

Jonathan did not notice the mockery in their eyes. Even now, he still thought I was the embarrassing one.

He shouted, "That money was for the baby, not expensive gowns! Refund that gown before you get something on it!"

His mother, as usual, joined in. "Rachel, I told you to stay home! You do nothing but spend my son's money all day, and now you're making a mess for him to clean up! Get out, or someone will make you!"

She summoned the guards and shot me a smug look. To her, humiliating me, trampling over my dignity, and insulting me in public was something worth being proud of.

Ever since the marriage, she had been trying to get me under her control. I had been an idiot for letting her have her way.

The guards arrived, but all of them bowed to me. "What do you need, Ms. Winsley?"

For a moment, Jonathan was shocked, but then something hit him, and his shock turned to scorn.

"Hiring background actors doesn't change anything, Rachel. I should've split our bills a long time ago. You stole my money just to pretend you're somebody!"

I sneered and threw the divorce papers in his face. "Look around, fool. Especially the screen. You should recognize the face in the photo. And remember, I was a Winsley before I married you. I'm part of the Winsley Group."

Jonathan covered his throbbing face. Then, as if a terrifying realization had finally crashed down on him, horror slowly filled his eyes.

He looked around the banquet hall, and it was only then that he saw it.

My daughter's face was displayed everywhere.
