Chapter 6

Author: Southwind
Bethany stayed in the hospital for two days, but Shane never showed up again.

She opened his social media page. As expected, he was glued to Yelena again.

His cover photo was Yelena’s selfie, and every single post was about her.

It was almost funny. Bethany was his actual girlfriend, yet she had never appeared on his page once.

In the past, thinking about it would always send her emotions spiraling. During her six years with Shane, she had turned into a bitter, miserable woman.

“This terrible relationship… Maybe letting go is its own kind of relief.” Bethany smiled wryly.

Once she felt well enough, she packed her things and checked out of the hospital.

She was about to leave Sea City, but she needed to meet up with Mia Sanders first.

Mia was her best friend. After graduation, the two of them stayed in Sea City together. Bethany stayed for love, while Mia stayed to start a business. They co-owned a coffee shop.

“Mia, I can sell you my share of the coffee shop at a low price. I already promised my parents I’d go back home and get married. I won’t be coming back to Sea City.”

“Are you serious? You’re giving up on Shane and marrying someone else?”

Mia stared at her in disbelief. She could not believe what she had just heard.

Bethany had expected that reaction. She had been so loud and bold about her love for Shane. She had even sworn that she would marry no one else. Thinking back, she found herself foolish.

She tried to brush it off. “Yeah. I’ll head back after I finish tying up a few loose ends. You’ll have to be my bridesmaid.”

The coffee shop had taken a lot of effort from both of them. Mia figured that if Bethany was willing to sell her share, she must have really made up her mind to leave.

“Alright. I’m glad you’ve finally figured it out. No point hanging on to something that’s already broken.”

Mia asked Bethany to draft a contract. Once they signed it, Bethany officially cut her last tie to Sea City.

As she stepped out of the coffee shop, her phone rang. It was Shane.

“My dad’s back. He wants you to come over for dinner. The chef’s already preparing the food. Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”

Bethany did not want to go, but then she thought about it again. Shane’s father still did not know that he wanted to postpone the wedding again.

She was leaving soon anyway. She might as well tell his father in person so that everything would be settled properly.

Not long after, Shane arrived to pick her up. Bethany was texting her mother about the wedding.

He glanced over and saw the word “wedding” on her screen. His face darkened.

“I told you to let your parents know we’re postponing it. You didn’t tell them?”

His tone made Bethany’s chest tighten. He knew that constant delays would make them unhappy, so he had simply dumped the problem on her.

Whenever things got hard, she was the one taking the hit, while he just stood by and watched.

Bethany chuckled. “I already told them. Don’t worry. I’m not clinging to you any longer.”

Shane froze and tried to explain himself. “You’ve got it wrong. That’s not what I meant! I just—”

“Forget it. It doesn’t matter anymore.” Bethany did not give him the chance to explain. She opened the car door and got in.

She rolled down the window and looked outside. The wind brushed against her cheek. Neither of them said another word.

When they first got together, Bethany always had so much to say. But her desire to talk had faded along with her love.

When they arrived at the Stafford villa, Bethany and Shane walked in one after another.

Shane’s father, Gavin Stafford, was a businessman. He was strict with Shane but always kind to Bethany.

“Bethany, you’re here! I asked the chef to make your favorite food. Dinner’s almost ready.”

As soon as he said that, Phoebe Lawson and Yelena came down the stairs, arm in arm.

Neither of them looked happy to see Bethany.

At dinner, Yelena insisted on sitting between Shane and Bethany and kept asking Shane to serve her some food.

“They grew up together, after all. Their bond is just special,” Phoebe said and shot Bethany a meaningful look.

Bethany felt sick. She set down her spoon and turned to Gavin.

“Mr. Stafford, the wedding has been put on hold. Shane must’ve mentioned it to you, right?”

Bethany thought it was Shane’s friends or old classmates handling his affairs, so she did not give it much thought. On her way home, she went to the supermarket to buy formula for the baby. Suddenly, a person wearing a baseball cap held her at knifepoint.“Bethany, why do you get to live happily? Why do you get to be so happy?”Bethany recognized the kidnapper immediately. It was Yelena, the woman Gavin had thrown out of the house. The supermarket security guards rushed over. They raised their batons and confronted Yelena. Some bystanders called the police.“Yelena, don’t be impulsive. The police are coming. You can’t get away. Is this worth risking your life for?”Yelena’s knife was sharp. It clipped Bethany’s skin, and bright red blood oozed from the cut.Bethany could not believe Yelena had been following her and wanted to actually kill her. She guessed that Yelena must have taken Shane’s body. Her love ran deep for Shane.“Even if you don’t care about yourself, you shou

Before Bethany could answer, Hudson spoke up from behind Shane.“Isn’t it obvious? You were also the one who hurt Bethany. You broke her heart. How dare you question her now?”Hudson was carrying a bowl of takeout. He walked up to Bethany and put his arm around her shoulders.“Bethany is my wife now. We are legally married. Showing up here to declare your feelings for my wife is far too late. “You had six years and countless chances to fix things. What did you do then? Bethany doesn’t owe you anything. Stop trying to guilt-trip her. Don’t say you love her or that you regret it. You only ever loved yourself. Your regret is not about losing the person you loved most. You regret things only because you now realize that you lost the person who loved you most.”Hudson’s words left Shane speechless. Seeing Hudson holding Bethany made him furious.“It’s you! You took advantage of the situation and stole Bethany from me!” Shane growled.Faced with Shane’s nonsense, Hudson shut him up c

Hudson did not go to the hospital after the rescue because he did not want Bethany to worry. He pushed through the pain and went home to take care of her. When Bethany’s condition finally stabilized, Xandra told her what really had happened that night.“Hudson’s such a good man. Everyone else was too scared to go down and save your dad, but he didn’t hesitate. If it weren’t for him, your dad might not have made it back.”Bethany did not know about any of this. After hearing Xandra’s story, she hugged Hudson and cried so hard that her tears and snot covered his shirt.“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you keep it from me? From now on, you have to tell me everything! Don’t hide anything from me ever again!”Hudson ruffled her hair. “I couldn’t let our baby be born without a grandpa, silly! He’s your dad and my father-in-law. I did what I should. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry. We’re both fine now, aren’t we?”Bethany looked at him through her tears. The thou

Bethany had been feeling unusually sleepy lately, and her period was almost a month late. Hudson went with her to the hospital for a checkup. When they got the report, he was over the moon. “Babe, you’re pregnant! I’m going to be a dad!” Bethany looked at the report in Hudson’s hand and only then realized what it meant.“I’m really pregnant?” Hudson handed her the report. “Of course. It’s real.” Bethany looked down at the report in disbelief. Hudson cupped her face and kissed her forehead. “Babe, just rest for now. I’ll take care of everything at home, and you take care of yourself. Pregnancy isn’t easy, but I’ll make sure you’re okay.”Bethany was not ready to be a mom. The baby was a surprise. But when she saw how happy Hudson was, her worries faded. With him around, she did not need to worry about anything. Both families were thrilled when they found out about the pregnancy. Hudson’s parents even sent a box of nourishing herbs and food from overseas. They remind

  • When Love Came Too Late   Chapter 18

Bethany did not realize how badly Shane had been hurt in the car crash until she saw him on the stage. At first, she was shocked and could not believe what she saw. Then, she started to feel sorry for him. Shane had always been proud. He used to be every woman’s dream, but he looked so broken at present. She could not imagine how much this must have crushed him. She felt a little guilty. If she had not ended things with him that way, Shane would not have gone to Wood City to find her. Maybe he would not have ended up like this.Hudson noticed her mood and squeezed her hand in comfort. “Don’t feel bad. Things like these happen. It’s not your fault.”Despite being the groom, Shane did not smile even once during the ceremony. His face looked devoid of emotion. He just followed the emcee’s instructions one step at a time. Gavin did not smile either. Phoebe’s eyes were red. She had broken down and cried before going on stage.Yelena was her only daughter. She had only ever wa
