Chapter 4

Autor: Bright Lights
"Go on, then. Don't come running back if you leave."

Zach's harsh words followed me from behind.

I didn't look back. I strode straight out without a trace of reluctance.

There was nothing in that house worth missing anyway.

It had originally been a home for just Zach and me.

Then my parents said they could no longer make ends meet back in the countryside and showed up asking to stay with us.

I hadn't wanted to let them move in. But after Zach's parents died, he'd spent years being passed around among relatives, always feeling like a guest in someone else's home. He missed having a real family around, so he begged me to let them stay.

And what had come of it?

I hadn't felt an ounce of familial warmth. Every day, they either asked me for money or took something of mine and gave it to Mia.

My bedroom.

The car I'd bought.

And now even Zach.

They'd taken him from me and handed him to Mia too.

I dragged my suitcase all the way out of the apartment complex, and not one person came after me.

Instead, a car came speeding straight toward me without slowing down.

One glance was enough for me to recognize it.

It was my car.

I threw myself out of the way, but even with everything I had, I couldn't avoid it completely. The car clipped me and sent me sprawling.

A security guard saw what happened and rushed over, asking if I needed an ambulance.

Another guard pulled the driver from behind the wheel.

It was Mia.

They restrained her, but within minutes, Linda and Robert came running over in a panic.

"It's a misunderstanding! Let go of our daughter!"

Zach walked over to me and tried to reason with me.

"Mia didn't do it on purpose. Just forgive her this once."

Mia lowered her head. A smug glint flashed through her eyes even as she pleaded, "I'm sorry. I drank too much and didn't see you."

Every part of my body hurt, but somehow it still wasn't as painful as what I felt in that moment.

"So you were driving drunk? Fine. I'll make sure you go to jail for it."

Slap!

Zach raised his hand and struck me across the face.

"She's your own sister! Do you really have to send her to jail?"

"My sister? Did you not see what she just did? She tried to run me over!"

"We already told you she didn't mean it. She apologized. You have to forgive her."

"I don't."

When he saw I wasn't backing down, Zach sighed.

"You once promised you'd do three things for me. I'm using the last one now. Don't press charges against Mia."

Back when we were deeply in love, I'd promised Zach I would do three things for him.

I'd already done two.

The first was letting my parents move in with us.

The second was agreeing to the mystery-box game.

And now the third was letting Mia off for hitting me with a car.

I looked at the way Zach stood protectively beside her.

The first love I'd once cherished so deeply finally died for good.

"Fine. I promise."

I’d consider this my way of putting an end to our seven years together.

The moment I agreed not to pursue it, everyone crowded around Mia to make sure she was all right.

No one spared me another glance.

I limped to the hospital by myself.

Fortunately, I only had scrapes and bruises.

Fortunately, I got away with only scrapes. Much like my family, the damage wasn't fatal, but the pain had a way of lingering.

I spent the next few days recovering at a hotel.

On the day I was scheduled to fly out, Zach sent me a message.

[There's a class reunion. Our old class president asked me to invite you.]

I knew what he was doing.

He was giving me an opening to come back without losing face.

But I didn't respond.

I turned off my phone, boarded the plane, and left to begin an entirely new life.

...

At the class reunion, Zach kept glancing around the room.

But the person he was waiting for never appeared.

Instead, an old friend who had gone to school with Nora from elementary school all the way through college came over to talk to him.

"You're Nora's boyfriend, right?"

"Nora's a really good person. Years ago, I tried to kill myself by jumping into a lake. She saved me. Then she stayed with me for a long time, talking me through it and giving me a reason to keep going. You'd better treat her well."

At the mention of Nora, Zach smiled.

"She saved someone? That's the first I've heard of it. But both sisters are kindhearted. I fell into the water once when I was younger, too, and Mia was the one who saved me."

The woman froze.

"Mia?"

Then she frowned.

"But Mia's never known how to swim. She couldn't swim even when we were kids."

Zach went rigid.

The glass slipped from his hand and shattered on the floor.

And in that instant, something seemed to click into place.

"Why do you always have to be better than me at everything? You got better grades, you have a better career, and even your boyfriend is hopelessly in love with you."It's not fair!"I watched in silence as the police took Mia away.Mia had never loved Zach. She was simply selfish. She'd always resented my existence because it meant she no longer had our parents' love all to herself.Whereas I'd done well at everything since we were kids, and she'd hated me for it. Whatever I had, she wanted to take from me.That included my boyfriend.By now, she'd come to think of Zach as something that belonged to her. When he tried to leave, she couldn't accept losing control of him. That was why she'd stabbed him the moment he stopped doing what she wanted. She'd been prepared to take him down with her.Zach was rushed to the hospital covered in blood.Linda and Robert knelt beside his hospital bed in tears, begging him to write a statement asking for leniency for Mia."Zach, we're sorry, but pleas

  • When Love Pours Down   Chapter 8

"Your parents are unbelievable. Even after I laid everything out for them, they kept trying to talk me into staying with Mia and bad-mouthing you. What kind of parents do that?"Zach had heard me talk about my childhood before, but I'd never gone into much detail. Most of what I'd mentioned had sounded like small things such as food, clothes, the way I was treated at home.So he hadn't thought much of it.His own childhood had been happy. His parents argued sometimes, but they'd always loved him. They took him on trips whenever they could and did everything possible to give him the things he wanted. That love was what had carried him through all the years after their deaths.Maybe that was why, deep down, he'd always believed families were supposed to be like his had been. There might be fights and arguments, but underneath it all, there was warmth and love. But the family Liam described, and the one Zach was finally beginning to see for himself, was nothing like that. All he saw was p

We also talked about the problems we ran into at work.Having a friend like Liam in my life was more than enough for me.What I hadn't expected was to see Zach again. One afternoon, he was waiting outside my office building. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened, and he rushed over."Nora, I finally found you."He lunged toward me, but I backed several steps away before he could reach me.His face was full of emotion. Mine wasn't."What do you want?"The distance in my voice seemed to hit him hard. Tears immediately welled in his eyes."I'm sorry, Nora. I was wrong. I thought Mia was the one who saved my life, and that's why I kept taking her side."I didn't find out until later that I'd gotten the wrong person. It was you. You were the one who saved me all along."I mistook her for my rescuer, and because of that, I did so many things that hurt you. Can you forgive me?"I looked at Zach as he stood there pleading with me, and I didn't feel the slightest trace of reluctance or linger

Robert waved a hand dismissively. "Good riddance. Now the two of you can get on with your lives."Mia gazed at Zach and said softly, "Now that Nora's gone, there won't be any more fighting at home. Isn't that better?"Looking at the three of them, Zach couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.He took a step back without answering."She's left home, and none of you are worried about her?"Robert said nothing.Linda gave an awkward smile. "Nora can take care of herself. What's there to worry about?"Zach studied the three of them carefully. Not one of them showed the slightest concern for Nora.It suddenly occurred to him that these weren't things a loving family should be saying.Keeping his thoughts to himself, Zach started reaching out to everyone he could think of. He contacted Nora's old classmates, trying to piece together everything he could about her past."Nora was close to Liam. You should ask him."It took several people before Zach finally managed to get in touch wi

  • When Love Pours Down   Chapter 5

"What did you say? Mia can't swim?"Zach went completely still. If Mia couldn't swim, then who had saved him?"Are you sure you're remembering right?"The guy's name was Liam Carter. He had grown up with both Nora and Mia. He and Nora were the same age, while Mia was several years younger.Liam thought carefully before answering."We went to the same schools from elementary school through college. At least the entire time I've known them, Mia couldn't swim."I still remember the summer after junior year. A bunch of us went swimming together, and she wouldn't even get in the water unless she had this huge inflatable ring around her. She was terrified."Unless she got so embarrassed after we made fun of her that she finally forced herself to learn?"Liam kept talking, but Zach wasn't hearing a word anymore. He stumbled out of the reunion and rushed all the way home.Mia glanced at the time when he came through the door."Why are you back so early?"Then she noticed his face.
