Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
I looked up at him and suddenly felt like I didn't know him anymore.

Back when we first started dating, whenever I talked about how blatantly my family favored Mia, Zach would always comfort me. He told me I could rely on him, that he'd always be on my side and support me.

But now, he'd chosen their side too.

"I'm disappointed in you too. Let's break up."

I turned and went back to my room.

Zach hurried after me. "Why are we breaking up when everything was fine between us?"

I tried to shut the door, but he wedged his foot against it.

"Everything was fine? Have you really not noticed how much you favor Mia?"

Zach visibly relaxed, then laughed.

"So that's what this is. You're jealous.

"Fine, fine. I'll tell you the truth. I do treat your sister a little differently because when I was twelve, I went to a tourist attraction and accidentally fell into the water. She was the one who saved me..."

As he started recounting the details, I frowned.

When I was twelve, I had saved a boy around my age from drowning. I'd been afraid Mom and Dad would yell at me for getting involved in someone else's business, so I never said much about it. Once I saw that he was all right, I ran off.

No wonder someone as outstanding as Zach had gone out of his way to pursue a nobody like me in college.

So he'd been trying to repay a debt.

Was the way he treated Mia really just because he'd mistaken her for the person who saved him?

If I hadn't seen what happened at the jewelry store, I probably would have believed him.

Still, I explained.

"I was the one who saved you."

Zach froze.

"What did you say?"

Just then, Mia pushed open the door, her eyes red.

"Nora, you're still the same as ever. You always have to steal credit for what I did."

She gave a wounded little sigh.

"Forget it. I'm the younger sister, after all. If you want the credit, you can have it."

Linda came rushing in behind her.

"Ever since you were little, you've always had to take anything good Mia had. Now you're even trying to steal credit for saving someone's life?"

Steal?

They were the ones who never gave me anything in the first place. They'd even tried to give Mia things Grandpa had left specifically to me. All I'd ever done was take back what belonged to me.

But somehow, in their mouths, I was always the one at fault.

Zach believed them.

"Enough. Stop making things up. I remember clearly that the girl who saved me had the name Mia Shaw written on her clothes. At first I thought you'd changed your name. It wasn't until later that I realized I'd gotten the wrong person..."

That was because Mom and Dad only bought clothes for Mia.

I wore the school uniforms she'd outgrown, and the name tag had only been covered with a new cloth patch. It must have fallen off when I went into the water to save him.

Mia dabbed theatrically at tears that weren't there.

"Good thing you have such a good memory, Zach. Otherwise, somehow this would've become my fault too."

Zach looked at her with obvious concern.

"Nora, you're the one who did something wrong. You should apologize to Mia."

I looked at Mia's smug face, then at the other three people, all turned against me.

"And if I don't?"

Robert roared, "Then get out of this house!"

I laughed.

"I'm the one who's been paying the rent. Are you sure you want to kick me out?"

Linda let out a wail and beat her chest.

"How did I ever give birth to someone so coldhearted? We're family, and yet you insist on keeping track of every single thing you pay for!"

A moment ago, they wanted me out of the house.

Now that they needed something from me, suddenly we were family again.

How convenient.

And somehow, Zach still didn't see the hypocrisy.

His disappointment only deepened.

"Fine. Leave. I'll pay the rent."

"Fine. You pay it."

If he wanted to support this whole family of leeches, he was welcome to do so.

I grabbed the suitcase I'd already packed and headed for the door.

When Zach realized I was actually going through with it, his eyes reddened.

"You're really leaving?"

Robert scoffed.

"She's just putting on a show. She'd never actually leave. She's been like this since she was little, always scheming."

Zach frowned and reached for my suitcase.

"Enough, Nora. You're an adult now. Stop throwing a tantrum like you did when you were a kid."

I yanked the suitcase back from him.

What he didn't understand was that I wasn't throwing a tantrum.

This time, I meant it.

  • When Love Pours Down   Chapter 9

"Why do you always have to be better than me at everything? You got better grades, you have a better career, and even your boyfriend is hopelessly in love with you."It's not fair!"I watched in silence as the police took Mia away.Mia had never loved Zach. She was simply selfish. She'd always resented my existence because it meant she no longer had our parents' love all to herself.Whereas I'd done well at everything since we were kids, and she'd hated me for it. Whatever I had, she wanted to take from me.That included my boyfriend.By now, she'd come to think of Zach as something that belonged to her. When he tried to leave, she couldn't accept losing control of him. That was why she'd stabbed him the moment he stopped doing what she wanted. She'd been prepared to take him down with her.Zach was rushed to the hospital covered in blood.Linda and Robert knelt beside his hospital bed in tears, begging him to write a statement asking for leniency for Mia."Zach, we're sorry, but pleas

  • When Love Pours Down   Chapter 8

"Your parents are unbelievable. Even after I laid everything out for them, they kept trying to talk me into staying with Mia and bad-mouthing you. What kind of parents do that?"Zach had heard me talk about my childhood before, but I'd never gone into much detail. Most of what I'd mentioned had sounded like small things such as food, clothes, the way I was treated at home.So he hadn't thought much of it.His own childhood had been happy. His parents argued sometimes, but they'd always loved him. They took him on trips whenever they could and did everything possible to give him the things he wanted. That love was what had carried him through all the years after their deaths.Maybe that was why, deep down, he'd always believed families were supposed to be like his had been. There might be fights and arguments, but underneath it all, there was warmth and love. But the family Liam described, and the one Zach was finally beginning to see for himself, was nothing like that. All he saw was p

We also talked about the problems we ran into at work.Having a friend like Liam in my life was more than enough for me.What I hadn't expected was to see Zach again. One afternoon, he was waiting outside my office building. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened, and he rushed over."Nora, I finally found you."He lunged toward me, but I backed several steps away before he could reach me.His face was full of emotion. Mine wasn't."What do you want?"The distance in my voice seemed to hit him hard. Tears immediately welled in his eyes."I'm sorry, Nora. I was wrong. I thought Mia was the one who saved my life, and that's why I kept taking her side."I didn't find out until later that I'd gotten the wrong person. It was you. You were the one who saved me all along."I mistook her for my rescuer, and because of that, I did so many things that hurt you. Can you forgive me?"I looked at Zach as he stood there pleading with me, and I didn't feel the slightest trace of reluctance or linger

Robert waved a hand dismissively. "Good riddance. Now the two of you can get on with your lives."Mia gazed at Zach and said softly, "Now that Nora's gone, there won't be any more fighting at home. Isn't that better?"Looking at the three of them, Zach couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.He took a step back without answering."She's left home, and none of you are worried about her?"Robert said nothing.Linda gave an awkward smile. "Nora can take care of herself. What's there to worry about?"Zach studied the three of them carefully. Not one of them showed the slightest concern for Nora.It suddenly occurred to him that these weren't things a loving family should be saying.Keeping his thoughts to himself, Zach started reaching out to everyone he could think of. He contacted Nora's old classmates, trying to piece together everything he could about her past."Nora was close to Liam. You should ask him."It took several people before Zach finally managed to get in touch wi

"What did you say? Mia can't swim?"Zach went completely still. If Mia couldn't swim, then who had saved him?"Are you sure you're remembering right?"The guy's name was Liam Carter. He had grown up with both Nora and Mia. He and Nora were the same age, while Mia was several years younger.Liam thought carefully before answering."We went to the same schools from elementary school through college. At least the entire time I've known them, Mia couldn't swim."I still remember the summer after junior year. A bunch of us went swimming together, and she wouldn't even get in the water unless she had this huge inflatable ring around her. She was terrified."Unless she got so embarrassed after we made fun of her that she finally forced herself to learn?"Liam kept talking, but Zach wasn't hearing a word anymore. He stumbled out of the reunion and rushed all the way home.Mia glanced at the time when he came through the door."Why are you back so early?"Then she noticed his face. "Go on, then. Don't come running back if you leave."Zach's harsh words followed me from behind.I didn't look back. I strode straight out without a trace of reluctance. There was nothing in that house worth missing anyway. It had originally been a home for just Zach and me.Then my parents said they could no longer make ends meet back in the countryside and showed up asking to stay with us.I hadn't wanted to let them move in. But after Zach's parents died, he'd spent years being passed around among relatives, always feeling like a guest in someone else's home. He missed having a real family around, so he begged me to let them stay. And what had come of it?I hadn't felt an ounce of familial warmth. Every day, they either asked me for money or took something of mine and gave it to Mia.My bedroom. The car I'd bought. And now even Zach. They'd taken him from me and handed him to Mia too.I dragged my suitcase all the way out of the apartment complex, and not one person came after me.I
