Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
“Jayden, I know you must resent me, but Coco and I are really just friends, and nothing more than a superior and a subordinate.

“Even if she prays for me day and night and sends people to look after me every day, that’s only out of friendship. The person she truly loves has always been you.”

Seeing Gerald’s smug expression, however, I almost threw up.

Just as I was about to respond, Isaac pressed his hand on my shoulder and urged, “Jayden, don’t act on impulse. Just bear with it a little longer.

“Three years ago, your parents died suddenly in a car accident. The group was thrown into chaos. After Claudia went into retreat, she issued a statement saying she would no longer involve herself in worldly affairs. She didn’t step in to help you, and you were gradually sidelined by the group.

“If you fall out with her now, it’ll be even harder to reclaim your inheritance.”

Listening to Isaac only worsened my impression of Claudia.

Even an outsider like him knew these inside details. There was no way Claudia wasn’t aware of them.

Yet she still chose to stand by and watch.

Still, even without her help, I believed my talent and ability would be enough for me to carve out a future of my own.

I cut Isaac off and looked straight at Claudia.

“I don’t care what your relationship is.

“And remember this. Today, I’m the one firing you.”

With that, I didn’t bother waiting for her reaction and simply walked out with Isaac.

As soon as we stepped out of the company, Isaac grabbed my arm and pressed me.

“Have you lost your mind?

“Never mind. You’ve got amnesia. Talking to you is pointless. I’ll go talk to Claudia again. For the sake of your seven-year marriage, she’ll surely cut you some slack.”

I frowned.

It seemed that over the past seven years, I’d lived a life even more pathetic than I imagined.

I reached out and grabbed him.

“Stop lecturing me. Come drink with me!”

The moment I mentioned drinking, Isaac froze in his tracks and stared at me in disbelief.

“Didn’t you quit drinking seven years ago because Claudia couldn’t stand the smell of cigarettes and alcohol?

“You even got into a fight with us to prove you’d quit, saying you’d cut ties with anyone who ever mentioned alcohol in front of you.”

The more I listened, the more absurd it sounded.

As far as I could remember, I’d loved alcohol more than anything. Before I was even seven years old, I was already mixing orange powder with beer at home to make my own “cocktails.”

I never thought I’d quit drinking for a woman who didn’t love me, or even fell out with a friend I’d known since childhood. That was beyond stupid.

Coming to my senses, I gave Isaac a playful punch to the chest and chuckled.

“After all those excuses, you’re not getting old and worried you can’t keep up with me, are you?”

Isaac instantly flushed red and fired off a message in our circle of friends’ group chat.

“Just you wait. Tonight I’m bringing all the guys over, and I’m going to drink you under the table!”

Soon enough, several close friends gathered, and everyone started talking at once, asking how I’d been lately.

Eventually, the conversation circled back to Claudia.

“I heard from Isaac that you’re getting a divorce?”

“Yeah. Didn’t you use to say Claudia was the love of your life, and that you’d rather die than live without her?”

Not wanting to worry my friends, I didn’t mention my memory loss. I simply smiled.

“I just figured some things out.

“Come, cheers!”

After a few rounds, the mood grew lively and everyone started teasing me.

From what they said, right after the wedding, Claudia had laid down a whole list of rules for me.

No smoking. No drinking. Must be home before midnight. No questioning where she was. Not allowed to touch her phone.

After Gerald’s accident, things got even worse.

Claudia moved out to go to her retreat and completely stopped managing the company.

Apparently, because I was worried about her health, I personally brewed healing broth every day and delivered it to her, rain or shine.

It had been seven years, and I hadn’t even seen her once.

I was even more speechless. In my memory, I had once been full of ambition and talent, determined to make a name for myself after graduation.

“What exactly are you trying to do, Claudia?” I confronted her in a lowered voice. Her smile widened happily.“What am I trying to do? Of course… I’m trying to win you back.”She leaned in close to me, her breath warm against my ear.“Jayden, you were willing to change for me before.“Now, I can change myself for you.”…Her words left everyone in the room speechless.Who was Claudia Yates? She was the legendary “Ice Queen”!Cold, domineering, and untouchable.Countless men had hit a wall trying to win her over. And now, she was saying she would pursue me, Jayden Clement? That was simply unbelievable.Everyone turned to look at me, waiting for my reaction.I felt nothing. If anything, it just seemed a little amusing. The pain of the past didn’t simply disappear.Even if she changed now, what difference would it make?“Claudia, you don’t have to do this. “It’s over between us.“Let the past stay in the past.”Claudia didn’t respond and just kept drinking. Before

“I’ve also come to see many people and many things for who and what they really are.“At least, I’ve found myself again.”I looked at Claudia and enunciated every word slowly, “I’m doing just fine now.”Claudia didn’t believe me.“No! Jayden, you’re talking nonsense!“You don’t remember anything. How could you know if you’re doing well or not?“You’re just saying that out of anger!” She retorted emotionally while gripping my hand tightly.“You can’t give up treatment! You have to get your memories back!”The Ferris wheel descended slowly toward the ground.I gently, but firmly, pushed her hands away. “It’s exactly because I don’t remember that I see things more clearly.“What kind of life have I been living all these years?“I’m not going back to the past.”I looked at her calmly, without a single ripple in my eyes. Then I turned and walked away.Behind me, her sobs broke out like her heart had shattered.I didn’t look back.Later, Claudia and I went to the local co

I’d treat this… as drawing a full stop to this absurd marriage. For the rest of the day, Claudia took me to all sorts of places. The cinema, restaurants, and the amusement park.We watched a movie together, had a meal, and even rode the Ferris wheel. It all felt like… a date. While we were on the Ferris wheel, Claudia gazed out at the view before suddenly speaking.“Jayden… do you remember?“This is exactly what our first date was like.”She turned and looked at me.“Do you remember… how it was back then?”Her eyes were filled with nostalgia and hope.I looked at her and answered honestly.“I don’t.”My memories had been hazy ever since that surgery. There were many things I couldn’t recall, including my first date with Claudia. She froze, clearly hadn’t expected that answer. “You don’t remember?“You’re still angry with me, aren’t you?”She thought I was doing this on purpose to upset her.Claudia’s eyes began to redden again.“Jayden, I know I was in the wrong be

“Are you free next Saturday?“Let’s… meet up.“And iron out everything.”I agreed.Claudia said nothing more and turned to leave. Her departing figure looked somewhat lonely.I stood there for a moment, a little confused.Could it be… that she still has feelings for me?I shook my head.Impossible. If she truly had feelings for me, she wouldn’t have ignored me for seven years.Neither would she have chosen to stay in that abbey when I needed her the most.No matter what, the pain she’d caused me could never be undone. There was no turning back between us.I dwelled no further on it and turned to leave this so-called “home.”I headed straight to see my close friend, Isaac. The Spencers were involved in the investment. He had connections everywhere and access to plenty of resources. After hearing about my ordeal, he didn’t hesitate for a second to offer his support for me to start my own business.“You should’ve done this a long time ago, Jay!“Why let that woman ha

Claudia’s voice carried weariness and a faint trace of anticipation. She thought that if she had just softened her stance a little, I would obediently come back to her.She thought I was still the Jayden Clement who would obey her every word.Unfortunately for her, she was wrong.Just then, the doorbell rang.I walked over to open the door. Standing outside was a sharply dressed real estate agent with a young couple behind him.“Hello, are you Mr. Clement?“I’m from West City Real Estate. You previously entrusted us with selling this property…”I nodded and stepped aside.“Come in.”Claudia’s face instantly paled. She whipped around and stared at me.“W-what… do you mean by this?!”Her voice was sharp and shrill, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.I met her gaze and said calmly, “Exactly what you see.“I’m selling the house.”Claudia staggered, nearly losing her balance.“Selling the house?!“H-have you lost your mind?!“This is our home! Claudia’s eyes widened, her lips trembled slightly, and her face alternated between pale and crimson. “You’re asking me for rent?”Her voice rose sharply, tinged with a sharp edge of disbelief.I shoved my hands into my pockets, looking completely unconcerned.“What else would I do?“Do you think I’m playing house with you?”She snapped her head up, her eyes bloodshot.“When did you find out?!”Her voice filled with fury and accusation, as if I’d committed some unspeakable crime.I chuckled softly, my tone dripping with sarcasm.“Does that even matter?“Why do you care when I found out?“Was I supposed to wait until you cheated on me, had a kid, and then had to do a DNA test to find out if it was mine?”Smack! The crisp sound of a slap echoed through the empty room.Claudia had put all her strength into that blow.My cheek burned instantly.Yet, I laughed. And laughed even harder. As soon as Gerald saw this, he immediately switched his act to one with a heartbroken
