Chapter 3

Author: Sweet Potato
The moment the explosion rang out, every trace of Robert's fake politeness vanished.

He stepped forward, snatched a stainless steel thermos from the service counter, and swung it viciously at my shoulder.

The impact landed with a dull thud.

My entire body lurched sideways. It felt as though someone had slammed a sledgehammer into my shoulder, and my whole arm went numb instantly.

The thermos bounced off the floor and rolled twice.

Its lid popped open, splashing hot water onto my pant leg. I flinched from the burn.

"Don't push your luck!" Robert pointed at me and yelled, "You're fixing it today whether you like it or not! If this entire building burns down, do you think that million dollars will be enough to cover the losses? You couldn't even pay for it with your life!"

The merchants who had been pretending to plead with me moments ago changed their tune in an instant. Their eyes bloodshot, they closed in around me like a pack of animals ready to devour their prey.

"How can you stand by and let people die? What kind of human being are you?"

Someone shoved me hard from behind. I stumbled forward, my chest slamming into the edge of the checkout counter. A dull ache shot through my ribs.

Someone else took advantage of the chaos to kick me. My leg buckled, and I dropped to one knee.

"If all our merchandise burns up, you're not getting off easy! If we have to, we'll all die here together!"

A hand reached out from the crowd, grabbed me by the collar, and hauled me to my feet before letting go.

I crashed to the floor beside a pillar. Blood streamed down my forehead and covered my right eye, turning everything I saw red.

The crowd continued pressing toward me.

I braced one hand against the pillar. Blood seeped from the corner of my mouth, and my right shoulder hung limp, completely useless.

I gritted my teeth and forced myself to stay upright.

Just then, a small figure wearing a pink backpack squeezed through the crowd.

My daughter, Harper, spread her arms and stood in front of me. "Don't you dare hit my dad!"

Panicked, I shouted at her so sharply that my voice cracked. "Harper! Who told you to come here? Get out of here! Go!"

The merchants' expressions changed.

Robert rushed forward, clamped a hand over Harper's mouth, and dragged her toward the electrical room. "Are you going to fix it or not?"

Harper kicked and struggled desperately, her pink backpack bouncing on her back as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Let me go! Don't you dare hurt my dad!"

Kendra shrieked, "If you won't fix it, we'll throw your daughter inside! Our merchandise is worth over a hundred million dollars combined! Her life is a small price to pay in comparison!"

My eyes instantly turned bloodshot.

Ever since my wife died, Harper was the only family I had left. I'd promised my wife that I would protect our daughter for the rest of my life.

And now, right before my eyes, someone was covering Harper's mouth and dragging her toward the flames.

I charged forward like a madman.

But my right shoulder was useless. I'd barely taken two steps when three or four merchants lunged at me from both sides and slammed me to the floor.

My face smashed against the tiles. My teeth cracked, and blood mixed with saliva, spilling across the floor.

I struggled with all my might, digging my fingers into the gaps between the tiles until my fingernails split and my fingertips scraped raw.

I was hopelessly outnumbered. No matter how desperately I fought, they held me down.

All I could do was watch helplessly as Harper struggled near the fire.

"Daddy, save me!"

Robert grabbed Harper by the arm and dragged her toward the smoke-billowing door of the electrical room. One of the straps on her pink backpack snapped.

Robert raised his hand, preparing to shove her into the flames.

My mind went blank. I couldn't think about anything else.

"I'll fix it! I'll fix it! Just don't touch my daughter! I'll do whatever you want!" I opened my mouth, about to shout the words aloud.

Suddenly, several stern voices erupted behind me.

"Stop! All of you, let the hell go of him!"

My knuckles were swollen and purplish, and even the slightest movement sent stabbing pain through them.Harper sat beside me while a nurse applied antiseptic to the scrapes on her knees. She bit her lip without crying, her little hand clutching the hem of my shirt the entire time.Just then, one of the police officers handling the case walked over."Mr. Booth, we've completed our preliminary investigation. We'll recover the full million dollars they extorted from you previously and return it to you.""We'll also hold them accountable for illegally surrounding you today, holding your daughter hostage, and assaulting you.""You can also seek compensation from them for your subsequent medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress. After only a few seconds of silence, Robert suddenly sprang to his feet and pointed accusingly at the merchants."This isn't my fault! It's theirs! They illegally ran extra wires to power their refrigerated display cases, overloading the circuits and accelerating the deterioration! I have nothing to do with it!"His eyes bulged as he jabbed his finger wildly at people in the crowd. The merchants erupted in outrage.Kendra was the first to jump forward. She flung her fur coat aside and pointed at Robert, cursing him out. "Bullshit! You're the one who bought all that cheap, substandard wiring to save money!"The copper cores were thinner than strands of hair! I saw them myself! That batch of wires in Building Three snapped the moment you bent it!"Stop pretending you're innocent!"The bald merchant charged forward, nearly shoving Robert against the wall. It was Captain Gerry Ward.He was the fire captain who had clapped me on the shoulder after the last fire and told me, "If you'd been two minutes later, the whole building would've burned to the ground."I recognized him immediately. The tension that had been coiled tight inside me suddenly snapped—and released. For three months, relatives I'd borrowed money from had avoided me. People who'd once worked alongside me pretended not to know me. Even Harper's teachers looked at me strangely.Everyone thought I'd been at fault. He was the only one who'd stood beside me with a hand on my shoulder back then and spoken those words. He stood there with two firefighters behind him.The crowd, which had been noisier than a packed marketplace moments earlier, fell silent.Dozens of people turned to look at him in unison.Captain Ward swept his gaze across the scene. The firefighters quickly smashed the lock in a few blows and carried Harper and me out, covering their mouths and noses as they went.I had barely crouched down and taken two breaths when Robert suddenly scrambled to his feet and rushed toward the police. He pointed straight at me and began shouting, "I want to report him! He started the fire! I saw it with my own eyes! He came here today carrying money, claiming he was repaying us, but he was really holding a grudge! He deliberately set the fire!"In an instant, dozens of voices erupted around us."That's right! He was still bitter about having to pay us back, so he came here to take revenge by setting the place on fire!""He deliberately brought all that money today just to put on a show for us! He'd planned this all along!"Someone pulled out a phone, opened a local news article, and thrust it toward the police. The headline was unmistakable: "Unauthorized Electrician's Negligent Work Causes Merchants to Lose Millions.""Lo

Several of the electricians crouched on the floor, shaking their heads repeatedly.Ace wiped the black soot from his face. "The wiring is buried way too far out of the way. Touch the wrong wire, and the whole thing could explode. There's no way we can do this."Kaleb clutched his multimeter, his hands trembling. "I just tested the three-phase circuit. Two sets are reversed. Anyone who connects them is dead."Aaron crouched at the far end. "This isn't about money anymore. It's about staying alive."Lying on the floor with Harper in my arms, I listened to them and curled my lips into a faint smile. The iron rod was still suspended above my hand, only a few inches from coming down.Robert had gone completely rigid.
