Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Potato
The entire place fell silent. Not a word was spoken.

Less than two seconds later, the crowd's attitude changed completely. They swarmed around me, patting my shoulders and offering me cigarettes.

"Come on, man! We were wrong last time. We got carried away!"

"Lives are at stake here! Fix the electrical system first. We can work out the money afterward!"

"We'll give you a bonus when you're done! We won't let you work for nothing!"

Robert quickly seized the opportunity to backtrack, thumping his chest as he made his promise. "Hey, I didn't understand the situation last time! Don't worry. Go ahead and make the repairs. I'll write you a statement right here and now!

"It'll only take a minute to write. I'll take full responsibility for everything. You won't have to pay a single cent!"

Watching Robert pound his chest and make promises, I felt a lump of bitterness lodge in my throat.

Three months ago, my wife had been critically ill in the hospital, waiting for money for surgery. I'd knelt in Robert's office, banging my forehead against the floor until it bled, begging him for that very statement.

All I wanted was for him to explain that I hadn't performed unauthorized repairs. He had been the one who asked me to help.

My knees had gone numb from kneeling, and my voice was raw from begging.

But Robert had remained seated in his leather chair without even lifting his eyelids. He'd merely waved his hand in irritation.

The security guards had immediately stepped forward, grabbed my arms, and started dragging me out.

I'd clung to the doorframe until my fingernails split.

One of the guards kicked me in the lower back, sending me flying into a trash can. The metal bin toppled over, spilling garbage all over me.

Before I could even recover, the hospital called.

The doctor told me my wife had suffered a sudden heart attack. Because we'd fallen behind on our medical bills, some of her medication had been discontinued. They'd failed to save her.

She was gone.

One minute. That was all it would have taken to save my wife's life.

"Mr. Hoffman, that statement of yours sure is precious." My voice was hoarse as I stared into his eyes. "My wife waited three days for it. In the end, she never got it."

Robert's smile faltered, but he quickly forced it back onto his face. "Let's put the past behind us for now, man. Right now—"

"Put it behind us?" I jerked my head up, my eyes bloodshot. "My wife is dead! And you want me to put it behind me?"

My shout left every merchant around us frozen in place.

Robert's mouth twitched. A flicker of impatience passed through his eyes. "Fine, fine, whatever you say. Just fix the electrical system first. We'll settle everything afterward."

"Settle?" I took a step forward, gripping the bag of money so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

"Tell me, how are you going to settle the debt for my wife's life? How are you going to make up for that one-minute statement you refused to write?"

I swept my gaze over the merchants gathered around us. Their faces were plastered with fake smiles, but all they cared about was their merchandise.

"What was it you just said? That you'd give me a bonus?

"You said all the right things last time, too. Then you turned around and surrounded my home, calling me a fly-by-night electrician and frightening my wife so badly that she hid inside, afraid to make a sound!

"My wife had a heart condition. You people blocked our door for three days. She couldn't sleep for a single one of them!

"Why weren't you so willing to work things out when it came to money back then?"

Some people in the crowd lowered their heads. Others turned away, but most responded with impatient clicks of their tongues.

Robert's expression darkened completely. He stepped toward me and shoved me hard in the chest.

I stumbled backward twice before crashing into a pillar. The impact jolted my entire body, and a metallic sweetness rose in my throat.

"That's enough! If this fire spreads today, you won't get away unscathed either."

Leaning against the pillar, I slowly straightened up. "My wife is already dead. What else do I have left to run from? I'll pay back the entire million. Every last dollar.

"But as for this electrical system, let whoever wants to fix it do so. I'm not touching it."

Just then, a deafening blast rang out from the direction of the electrical room.

The paramedics crouched beside me.My right hand was secured in a splint. My knuckles were swollen and purplish, and even the slightest movement sent stabbing pain through them.Harper sat beside me while a nurse applied antiseptic to the scrapes on her knees. She bit her lip without crying, her little hand clutching the hem of my shirt the entire time.Just then, one of the police officers handling the case walked over."Mr. Booth, we've completed our preliminary investigation. We'll recover the full million dollars they extorted from you previously and return it to you.""We'll also hold them accountable for illegally surrounding you today, holding your daughter hostage, and assaulting you.""You can also seek compensation from them for your subsequent medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress. They bear full responsibility."I murmured an acknowledgment, my face expressionless. So what if I got the million dollars back?My wife wasn't coming back. The doctor had

After only a few seconds of silence, Robert suddenly sprang to his feet and pointed accusingly at the merchants."This isn't my fault! It's theirs! They illegally ran extra wires to power their refrigerated display cases, overloading the circuits and accelerating the deterioration! I have nothing to do with it!"His eyes bulged as he jabbed his finger wildly at people in the crowd. The merchants erupted in outrage.Kendra was the first to jump forward. She flung her fur coat aside and pointed at Robert, cursing him out. "Bullshit! You're the one who bought all that cheap, substandard wiring to save money!"The copper cores were thinner than strands of hair! I saw them myself! That batch of wires in Building Three snapped the moment you bent it!"Stop pretending you're innocent!"The bald merchant charged forward, nearly shoving Robert against the wall. "You sat on that corrective action notice for three months! You dodged the fire department every time they came! And now that so

It was Captain Gerry Ward.He was the fire captain who had clapped me on the shoulder after the last fire and told me, "If you'd been two minutes later, the whole building would've burned to the ground."I recognized him immediately. The tension that had been coiled tight inside me suddenly snapped—and released. For three months, relatives I'd borrowed money from had avoided me. People who'd once worked alongside me pretended not to know me. Even Harper's teachers looked at me strangely.Everyone thought I'd been at fault. He was the only one who'd stood beside me with a hand on my shoulder back then and spoken those words. He stood there with two firefighters behind him.The crowd, which had been noisier than a packed marketplace moments earlier, fell silent.Dozens of people turned to look at him in unison.Captain Ward swept his gaze across the scene. His eyes landed on the scattered banknotes on the floor, then shifted to my hand, swollen to twice its normal size. His br

The firefighters quickly smashed the lock in a few blows and carried Harper and me out, covering their mouths and noses as they went.I had barely crouched down and taken two breaths when Robert suddenly scrambled to his feet and rushed toward the police. He pointed straight at me and began shouting, "I want to report him! He started the fire! I saw it with my own eyes! He came here today carrying money, claiming he was repaying us, but he was really holding a grudge! He deliberately set the fire!"In an instant, dozens of voices erupted around us."That's right! He was still bitter about having to pay us back, so he came here to take revenge by setting the place on fire!""He deliberately brought all that money today just to put on a show for us! He'd planned this all along!"Someone pulled out a phone, opened a local news article, and thrust it toward the police. The headline was unmistakable: "Unauthorized Electrician's Negligent Work Causes Merchants to Lose Millions.""Lo

Several of the electricians crouched on the floor, shaking their heads repeatedly.Ace wiped the black soot from his face. "The wiring is buried way too far out of the way. Touch the wrong wire, and the whole thing could explode. There's no way we can do this."Kaleb clutched his multimeter, his hands trembling. "I just tested the three-phase circuit. Two sets are reversed. Anyone who connects them is dead."Aaron crouched at the far end. "This isn't about money anymore. It's about staying alive."Lying on the floor with Harper in my arms, I listened to them and curled my lips into a faint smile. The iron rod was still suspended above my hand, only a few inches from coming down.Robert had gone completely rigid. He stood frozen in place. He looked down at me. His face still wore its vicious expression, but his eyes were filled with panic.Looking at him, I suddenly felt like laughing. He'd been the one threatening to cripple my hand just moments ago.Now that the workers had ad

More than a dozen men in electrician uniforms surged forward and pulled Harper away to safety.Ace Wilkerson was at the front. He snatched Harper away from Robert and immediately spun around and punched him in the face."What the hell is wrong with you? You're going after a child now?"Kaleb Marin, Aaron Chase, and Damon Harmon followed close behind. They were all men I'd once considered brothers, and every one of them was drenched in sweat.Holding Harper in his arms, Ace rushed toward me, cursing furiously, "Samuel! We saw the video online! These assholes are bullying you again!"All of you, back the hell off! Anyone who lays another finger on Samuel, just try me!"I took my trembling daughter into my arms and wiped the tears from her face.Standing opposite us, Robert slowly looked from Ace to the others.Their electrician uniforms.Their tool bags.Every one of them was big and solidly built."Good!
