Chapter 2

Author: Richie Young
Nolan looked stunned all over again.

"I didn't! And I know you're allergic to mangoes. We don't even keep them in the house!"

"But I saw you eating them myself. Ari, why would you try to hurt me?"

Vanessa sobbed so hard she could barely catch her breath, as if she'd suffered some terrible injustice.

This time, I actually laughed.

I glanced at Nolan. He looked completely dumbfounded.

So I copied the way he'd always blindly sided with Vanessa and gave him a mild scolding.

"How could you be so vicious? You're nothing compared to Nessa."

Then I helped Vanessa upstairs.

I had to hand it to her. She really knew how to act sweet and clingy.

She kept wriggling in my arms and rubbing herself against me.

When I still didn't respond and even tried to pull away, her eyes instantly reddened.

"Nolan, why are you still being so cold to me?

"Are you... still blaming me for what happened back then?"

I paused.

Some unpleasant memories came rushing back.

Nolan, Vanessa, and I had all been classmates in college.

Back then, they were both gorgeous and came from wealthy families.

They were the stars of the campus, the kind of couple everyone thought belonged together.

Someone like me was basically Cinderella. Even though I had a crush on Nolan, I could only keep it to myself.

Then the Ralston family suddenly went bankrupt.

Vanessa dumped him in front of everyone, walked off arm in arm with her new boyfriend, and left the country.

Nolan fell apart after that.

He'd drink all night and stagger straight into traffic. It happened more times than I could count.

And back then, I really did love him.

Seeing him like that broke my heart.

So, like an idiot, I stayed by his side and kept encouraging him.

When he wanted to drink, I stayed up all night watching over him.

When he wanted to start a company, I scraped together funding any way I could.

When he wanted to make it big, I sharpened my skills and worked around the clock.

It's embarrassing to admit, but back then, I didn't even dare hope he'd ever love me back.

I just thought that as long as he was doing well, I'd be happy.

Maybe everything I'd done finally moved him.

Two years ago, on my birthday, he told me how he felt.

He treated me wonderfully, and for a little while, I finally got to know what being loved felt like.

Then last year, on my birthday, he proposed.

His eyes were red as he swore he'd love me for the rest of his life.

But we'd barely gotten engaged when Vanessa heard Nolan was back on top and came running home.

In tears, she claimed she'd only left him because she'd had a life-threatening illness.

She said she'd loved him all along, and the moment she recovered, she'd come straight back to him.

Well, she was his first love.

Of course Nolan forgave her.

After that, every time Vanessa falsely accused me of something, he believed her without hesitation and punished me again and again.

By the time I snapped back to the present, I was even angrier.

I gave Vanessa a cold look.

"I've given you a lot of money these past two years, haven't I?"

Vanessa blinked, then smiled shyly.

"Yeah. You gave me my own card on your account and bought me all kinds of jewelry and designer bags.

"I kept telling you I didn't want any of it, but you insisted. You gave me so much I barely knew what to do with it all.

"I love you for you. It's not about your money..."

"Then give it all back."

I cut her off flatly.

Before, I'd been so consumed by the fact that Nolan didn't love me anymore that I thought the heartbreak would kill me.

But hearing just how much money I'd lost?

That was when I learned what real heartbreak felt like.

That was my money!

Money I'd busted my ass earning through endless client dinners and all-nighters!

Luckily, Vanessa thought I was testing her.

Pretending she didn't care, she gave it all back.

Then she said sweetly, "See? I told you. You're all I want.

"I really don't care whether you have money or not."

I gave her a vague "Mm-hmm."

Then I turned around, put the money into an offshore trust, and started planning how to transfer the rest of the assets.

God knew when Nolan and I would switch back.

I had to start looking out for myself.

I'd been such an idiot before.

I'd actually imagined that after we switched bodies, Nolan would finally see Vanessa for who she really was and come back to me.

Turns out, having money and power felt so good.

For a moment, time seemed to stand still.Vanessa's mouth hung open. After a long moment, she finally murmured, "No... That's impossible. It can't be..."I smiled."Why not?"Haven't you been wondering why I suddenly started treating Arianna so well? Why I suddenly stopped buying your act?"Because I'm Arianna."All this time, the person you kept framing, the one who saw your true colors, was actually Nolan."And all those times you acted sweet and helpless, trying to get Nolan's attention and affection? You were really putting on that act for me."Vanessa stared at me, eyes wide. Her gaze slowly went unfocused, as if she'd just seen something terrifying."Aah!"She suddenly let out a piercing scream, grabbed her bag from the floor, and swung it wildly at me."No! You're lying! That's impossible!"I dodged aside. The two police officers immediately stepped in from either side and restrained her.Vanessa was taken away. The next time I heard about her, she'd already left the police stat

Vanessa was still at the hospital. She had clearly gone to some effort to make herself look pitiful, sitting curled up on a bench with her knees hugged to her chest. Her shoulders trembled as if she were crying. At the sound of footsteps, she looked up at me with red-rimmed eyes."Nolan, I really didn't do anything to her..."I gave her a cool look, then stepped aside to let the two police officers behind me come forward.Vanessa's expression froze."Are you Ms. Langford?" one of the officers asked. "Mr. Ralston filed a report alleging that you deliberately harmed his fiancée, Ms. Keaton."Ms. Keaton is three months pregnant. She lost consciousness after your confrontation and was brought to the hospital. Doctors are still evaluating whether the fetus was harmed."The color drained from Vanessa's face."No! I didn't push her! She passed out on her own!"That part was true. Nolan had told me himself that Vanessa hadn't pushed him while he was in my body. But I calmly pulled up the secur

I let out a long breath.I was just about to ask Walter to have a few more staff members look after Nolan when he grabbed my hand and looked straight into my eyes."Ari, I owe you this. I'm sorry."I froze.Nolan had always been proud. He'd been the golden boy all his life.Even during those two years when he'd hit rock bottom, I'd always been careful to protect his pride.Maybe that was exactly why he'd come to take everything I'd done for him for granted. It was the first time I'd ever heard words like "thank you" or "I'm sorry" from him."After spending all this time in your body, I think I finally understand a little of what it felt like to be you."He paused, then gave a bitter smile."I never knew Vanessa could be like that."She was always sweet and gentle with me. I had no idea she'd treat you that way when I wasn't around."And the time you had that fever, and what happened with your dad... I'm sorry for all of it."Those were the words I'd once wanted more than anything. It w

I stood there, my mind going completely blank.Me?Pregnant?Just like that?Nolan still had one hand over his lower belly, seemingly without even realizing it."The doctor says you're three months along."It was... the night we got engaged."I remembered. That was probably when we'd loved each other most. Back then, we'd truly believed we'd spend the rest of our lives together, just the two of us.We thought we'd never be apart, so we hadn't used any birth control that night.Who could've known what would happen afterward..."Actually, I've known for a while," Nolan said. "I kept feeling nauseous and losing my appetite. At first, I thought your body was just run-down, or that my soul wasn't adjusting well to it."Then I took a pregnancy test and found out."Nolan gave a faint smile. He actually looked a little happy.Happy, my ass.I wasn't happy at all."No. We have to switch back. Right now."This was my body.My life. And my child.I was absolutely certain that I didn't love Nolan

Nolan visibly stiffened. It lasted only a second, but I caught it. That was all the confirmation I needed.I really didn't get it.He used to act like he couldn't stand me. Once, when he was drunk, he'd even said things like, "If only you hadn't stayed by my side back then. Then I wouldn't have to feel so guilty."I knew that after Vanessa came back, he'd wanted to get away from me.So what was all this about now?Whatever. I couldn't be bothered to figure out what was going on in his head.As long as I was in Nolan's body, I'd do what I needed to do.And so our bizarre life continued.I worked hard every day, gaining experience so I could start my own company someday.Meanwhile, Nolan really did start living my life in earnest while he was in my body.He ate the balanced meals I'd ordered on schedule and dutifully went to physical therapy for my injured leg.He even met up with my friends and followed the same daily routine I'd had before the body swap.He really was living my life.A

Wait.Had we switched again?I stared at Nolan's face in the mirror, completely baffled. But I hadn't even made a wish this time! When I went downstairs, Nolan was already sitting at the table in my body.Surprisingly, he looked perfectly calm, nothing like the way he'd flown into a rage after our first swap.I studied him suspiciously for a moment and was just about to ask what was going on when Walter rushed over, looking frantic."Mr. Ralston, something's wrong. Ms. Langford... she's threatening to kill herself!"Vanessa really knew how to make a scene. Nolan must've taken great care of her. She certainly had plenty of energy to spare. She was standing on the roof of the mansion, crying and demanding to know why I didn't believe her.She was threatening to jump."Nolan, if you don't even believe me anymore, what's the point of living? I might as well die!"Do you have any idea how much pain I was in every day when I was going through chemo overseas? The only thing that kept me going
