Chapter 1

Vanessa Langford looked at me with tear-filled, hopeful eyes and held out her hand.

I froze.

Oh, right. I was in Nolan's body.

Normally, Nolan Ralston would've rushed to scoop her up, fussed over her, and hurled every insult he could think of at me.

So I reluctantly helped her to her feet.

Then I turned to Nolan and shot him a disappointed glare.

"How could you be so vicious?

"What did Nessa ever do to deserve this? Why would you hurt her like that?"

I'd heard Nolan say those things so many times that the words rolled right off my tongue.

He was still reeling from our sudden body swap, but the moment he heard me, his eyes widened.

"Are you blind?

"I haven't moved an inch! She fell on her own!"

He shouted so loudly that Vanessa pretended to be frightened, trembling in my arms.

"Nolan..." she whimpered. "Ari's being so scary. I'm scared..."

Honestly, I felt a little awkward with her clinging to me like that.

I was debating whether to push her away when Nolan started comforting her, his eyes full of tender concern.

"I'm sorry, Nessa. I didn't mean to yell at you. My head's just all over the place right now.

"You probably won't believe this, but I'm the real Nolan. I don't know how, but Arianna and I suddenly switched bodies."

Then he rounded on me.

"Arianna, I'm warning you! Stay away from Nessa! Is this another one of your schemes?"

When he looked at Vanessa, he was all warmth and tenderness. But the moment his gaze shifted to me, his expression darkened.

The contrast made my heart go cold.

Luckily, I didn't even have to defend myself.

Vanessa burst out laughing.

Leaning against my shoulder, she asked coyly, "Nolan, has Ari lost her mind?

"It's all my fault. Maybe you've been fussing over me too much. Now she's making up this ridiculous excuse just to get your attention.

"You really should spend more time with her. You're always over at my place... A girl can only take so much of you, you know."

Her cheeks flushed bright red.

I took another look at Nolan, still in my body. Vanessa's words left him looking pale one moment and flushed the next.

I couldn't help sighing.

My body was painfully thin and deathly pale, with thinning hair and cheeks that were still red and swollen.

I hadn't realized just how badly the abuse had taken its toll on me.

Nolan had really put me through hell.

I turned to Walter Fenwick, the Ralston family's longtime butler.

"Walter, have someone tend to Arianna's wounds. And from now on, make sure she gets nutritious meals. Don't let her go hungry."

It was still my body, after all. I might as well make sure it was well taken care of.

But Vanessa clearly wasn't happy about that.

Later that afternoon, while we were eating, she suddenly clutched her head and complained of feeling dizzy.

Then she kept shooting me pointed looks, desperate for me to take the hint.

In the past, whenever she complained of dizziness, it always meant having my blood drawn for her.

So I instinctively glanced at Nolan.

Seeing Vanessa like that, he was practically beside himself with worry.

He shot me a furious glare, then rolled up his sleeve.

"Go ahead! Take my blood! I don't care if it kills me!"

Wow. He really would do anything for Vanessa.

I'd thought watching him fuss over her would hurt. After all, I'd genuinely loved Nolan once.

But to my surprise, instead of tears, a mocking laugh escaped me.

After everything he'd been through, how could he still be such a lovesick fool?

I sat back and calmly watched them draw blood from him.

Sure enough, less than five minutes after they finished, Vanessa suddenly clutched her chest and collapsed into my arms.

"Nolan, I... I feel terrible! I can't breathe!

"Wait! I just remembered! I saw Ari secretly eating a bunch of mangoes earlier!

"She must've eaten those mangoes on purpose before giving me blood! She wanted to trigger my allergy..."

For a moment, time seemed to stand still.Vanessa's mouth hung open. After a long moment, she finally murmured, "No... That's impossible. It can't be..."I smiled."Why not?"Haven't you been wondering why I suddenly started treating Arianna so well? Why I suddenly stopped buying your act?"Because I'm Arianna."All this time, the person you kept framing, the one who saw your true colors, was actually Nolan."And all those times you acted sweet and helpless, trying to get Nolan's attention and affection? You were really putting on that act for me."Vanessa stared at me, eyes wide. Her gaze slowly went unfocused, as if she'd just seen something terrifying."Aah!"She suddenly let out a piercing scream, grabbed her bag from the floor, and swung it wildly at me."No! You're lying! That's impossible!"I dodged aside. The two police officers immediately stepped in from either side and restrained her.Vanessa was taken away. The next time I heard about her, she'd already left the police stat

Vanessa was still at the hospital. She had clearly gone to some effort to make herself look pitiful, sitting curled up on a bench with her knees hugged to her chest. Her shoulders trembled as if she were crying. At the sound of footsteps, she looked up at me with red-rimmed eyes."Nolan, I really didn't do anything to her..."I gave her a cool look, then stepped aside to let the two police officers behind me come forward.Vanessa's expression froze."Are you Ms. Langford?" one of the officers asked. "Mr. Ralston filed a report alleging that you deliberately harmed his fiancée, Ms. Keaton."Ms. Keaton is three months pregnant. She lost consciousness after your confrontation and was brought to the hospital. Doctors are still evaluating whether the fetus was harmed."The color drained from Vanessa's face."No! I didn't push her! She passed out on her own!"That part was true. Nolan had told me himself that Vanessa hadn't pushed him while he was in my body. But I calmly pulled up the secur

I let out a long breath.I was just about to ask Walter to have a few more staff members look after Nolan when he grabbed my hand and looked straight into my eyes."Ari, I owe you this. I'm sorry."I froze.Nolan had always been proud. He'd been the golden boy all his life.Even during those two years when he'd hit rock bottom, I'd always been careful to protect his pride.Maybe that was exactly why he'd come to take everything I'd done for him for granted. It was the first time I'd ever heard words like "thank you" or "I'm sorry" from him."After spending all this time in your body, I think I finally understand a little of what it felt like to be you."He paused, then gave a bitter smile."I never knew Vanessa could be like that."She was always sweet and gentle with me. I had no idea she'd treat you that way when I wasn't around."And the time you had that fever, and what happened with your dad... I'm sorry for all of it."Those were the words I'd once wanted more than anything. It w

I stood there, my mind going completely blank.Me?Pregnant?Just like that?Nolan still had one hand over his lower belly, seemingly without even realizing it."The doctor says you're three months along."It was... the night we got engaged."I remembered. That was probably when we'd loved each other most. Back then, we'd truly believed we'd spend the rest of our lives together, just the two of us.We thought we'd never be apart, so we hadn't used any birth control that night.Who could've known what would happen afterward..."Actually, I've known for a while," Nolan said. "I kept feeling nauseous and losing my appetite. At first, I thought your body was just run-down, or that my soul wasn't adjusting well to it."Then I took a pregnancy test and found out."Nolan gave a faint smile. He actually looked a little happy.Happy, my ass.I wasn't happy at all."No. We have to switch back. Right now."This was my body.My life. And my child.I was absolutely certain that I didn't love Nolan

Nolan visibly stiffened. It lasted only a second, but I caught it. That was all the confirmation I needed.I really didn't get it.He used to act like he couldn't stand me. Once, when he was drunk, he'd even said things like, "If only you hadn't stayed by my side back then. Then I wouldn't have to feel so guilty."I knew that after Vanessa came back, he'd wanted to get away from me.So what was all this about now?Whatever. I couldn't be bothered to figure out what was going on in his head.As long as I was in Nolan's body, I'd do what I needed to do.And so our bizarre life continued.I worked hard every day, gaining experience so I could start my own company someday.Meanwhile, Nolan really did start living my life in earnest while he was in my body.He ate the balanced meals I'd ordered on schedule and dutifully went to physical therapy for my injured leg.He even met up with my friends and followed the same daily routine I'd had before the body swap.He really was living my life.A

Wait.Had we switched again?I stared at Nolan's face in the mirror, completely baffled. But I hadn't even made a wish this time! When I went downstairs, Nolan was already sitting at the table in my body.Surprisingly, he looked perfectly calm, nothing like the way he'd flown into a rage after our first swap.I studied him suspiciously for a moment and was just about to ask what was going on when Walter rushed over, looking frantic."Mr. Ralston, something's wrong. Ms. Langford... she's threatening to kill herself!"Vanessa really knew how to make a scene. Nolan must've taken great care of her. She certainly had plenty of energy to spare. She was standing on the roof of the mansion, crying and demanding to know why I didn't believe her.She was threatening to jump."Nolan, if you don't even believe me anymore, what's the point of living? I might as well die!"Do you have any idea how much pain I was in every day when I was going through chemo overseas? The only thing that kept me going
