Natasha’s POV

The knock came soft and early. I turned over groggily, dragging the edge of the pillow closer. Another knock, followed by a low voice.

“Miss, breakfast is being served.”

It took a second for everything to click. The room. The bed that didn’t smell like home. The necklace I forgot to take off still wrapped around my neck like a memory. I sat up slowly, brushing hair off my face, my eyes still adjusting to the light slipping past the curtains.

“I’ll be out soon,” I called, voice hoarse.

They didn’t knock again.

I freshened up quickly, not even bothering with makeup or anything extra. I didn’t know what I was expecting this morning, but I knew what I hoped. Maybe he’d be at the table. Maybe he’d talk to me again. I didn’t even know what I wanted him to say.

The dining room was quiet, same as last night. But not in a heavy way. Just… calm. The long table was already set, silver shining like it had been polished minutes ago. I walked in slowly.

Only a few guards stood at the

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   29: Pneumonia

Natasha’s POVThe night was colder than it should be. Not outside. Inside me. Like the water had carved a home beneath my skin and refused to leave. I was shivering again. My body trembling in slow, uneven waves that no amount of blankets could stop. I had felt this before. The coughs that wouldn’t stop. The fever that came and went like it had a mind of its own. Pneumonia. My mother had battled it with me so many times that I lost count. She used to say my lungs were too proud to ask for help until they were drowning. And now, they were doing it again. But she wasn’t here now.The thick robe wrapped around me felt useless. I had thrown it over two other layers of clothes, but still, the cold found its way in. It felt like I was sitting outside, in the rain, with nothing but my own breath to keep me alive. My hands were shaking as I reached for the bell rope beside the bed. It took more strength than I had to pull it, but I did. The chime echoed through the room, soft but urgent, lik

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   28: Release the maid

Lucien's POV I didn’t say anything. I just stood there, staring at her like the answer I needed was somewhere buried in her face. But it wasn’t. It was in her words, in that tired, breaking voice that didn’t have the strength to fight but still kept pushing. She wasn’t begging me with noise. She was doing it with a quiet that felt heavier than any scream. And that silence... it scraped at something deep, something I’d buried a long time ago and never wanted to dig up.“Fine.” The word slipped out of me, but it didn’t feel like a decision. It felt like surrender. My throat tightened when I said it, like the weight of it was too much. “She’s free. No punishment.”Natasha’s head moved, barely. A slow nod, but it was the way her shoulders eased just a little that got to me. Like she’d been holding a boulder in her chest, and now it was shifting, even if it hadn’t been lifted. She didn’t smile. She didn’t thank me. She just sank back into those hospital pillows like every breath was an ef

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   Hi

Lucien’s POVShe said Ashley’s name like it burned her tongue. I saw it, that flicker of something raw behind her eyes. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it cracked the air all the same.“Ashley was there,” Natasha said, her lips trembling just enough to show the weight behind her words. “She watched me struggle and didn't try to help. Not until she heard people coming.”For a moment, I didn’t speak. I just sat there, hand still curled around hers, my jaw tight. Her skin was warm again, but barely. I could still feel the cold trying to fight its way back. And now this?I stood without thinking. The chair scraped back against the tiled floor, sharp enough to draw eyes if anyone else had been here. I didn’t care. I turned to the guard just outside the door and my voice came out like gravel.“Get me Ashley!”The guard bowed and disappeared down the hall, boots thudding. I turned back to Natasha. She looked exhausted already.I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to believe Natasha was just disori

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   26: Ashely is to blame

Natasha's POVThe world didn’t come back all at once. It dragged itself into my body in pieces—sound, light, the weight of air pressing against my chest like I had been buried under something too thick to lift. I couldn’t move right away. I didn’t want to. Everything felt heavy. My head, my arms, even my breath. My throat stung like I had swallowed something wrong, something sharp. I could taste it—chlorine, bitter and cold. I heard that soft, steady beep first. Mechanical and distant. A rhythm. Not my own, but close enough to cling to.When my eyes finally opened, the light hit too hard. Bright. Unforgiving. I squinted against it and blinked until it faded into something I could bear. The ceiling above me was too white, and the room smelled like antiseptic and something lifeless. My fingers twitched. I felt fabric beneath my hand. Then warmth. Solid, unmoving. A hand. His hand.I turned my head—slow, like the world would crack if I did it too fast. And there he was.King Lucien. He l

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   25: Too late

Lucien's POVThe room was quiet, too quiet for a room full of suits and polished shoes. Sunlight filtered through the tall glass windows, bouncing off the gold-rimmed files laid across the long mahogany table. The kind of silence that came when money was talking, and no one wanted to speak out of turn.I sat at the head of the table, fingers linked, back straight, eyes half-lowered but seeing everything. Their mouths moved, all of them talking about projections, shares, expansion plans, acquisitions. I nodded when needed, gave a tight smile when expected. But I wasn’t really there.Something felt off.It started minutes ago. A slow crawl under my skin. Like a bad scent you can’t place. Restlessness coiled around my spine, wouldn't let go. I couldn't name it, couldn't shake it either. My Beta stood near the door, quiet as always, scanning the room like a shadow that moved only when I willed it.“…we believe with this partnership, Your Majesty, your estate will gain not just value but s

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   24: Help me!

Ashley’s POVThe sun was too damn hot, beating down like it had a personal grudge. My skin was already sticky with sweat, even though I hadn’t stepped out for more than five minutes. I sat on the edge of the bed, one leg bouncing, phone pressed to my ear as I stared at the silent screen. No buzz, no message, no call back. Nothing.Aliyah finally picked up, her voice low like she was trying to hide from someone. "Still nothing. I’ve tried everyone, Ash. They’re not answering. They’ve all pulled out."My heart dropped, but I didn’t let it show. Not even to her. I pressed my nails into my thigh, stared hard at the mirror. "What about Paul? He owes me. He wouldn’t dare ignore me.""I messaged him again. He’s read it, but he hasn’t replied. It’s like... it’s like everyone’s scared. Like they don’t want to be seen working with you."I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. My jaw clenched and I ended the call without saying another word. I stood up too fast, grabbed my robe and tied it tight around my
