Lucien’s POV

The boardroom smelled of old wood and stale coffee, the bitter kind that had sat too long in its pot. I sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, my reflection staring faintly back at me from the glossy surface — a shadow of a man with sleepless eyes and a crown that never really left his head. The air was warm, too warm, humming with the soft breath of the vents and the quiet shuffle of papers from the men across from me.

Representatives from the southern provinces. Men I’d once pulled out of ruin when their lands were choking under debt and whispers of rebellion. Men who owed me more than they could repay. Which was why their tight smiles and restless eyes set something sharp in my chest.

Lord Varen, the one leading their side, slid the contract toward me with the same polished grace he had worn since I met him. Hair slicked back, silver kissing his temples, suit cut to perfection — but his jaw ticked in a way I had not seen before.
