Ashley’s POV

The sun was too damn hot, beating down like it had a personal grudge. My skin was already sticky with sweat, even though I hadn’t stepped out for more than five minutes. I sat on the edge of the bed, one leg bouncing, phone pressed to my ear as I stared at the silent screen. No buzz, no message, no call back. Nothing.

Aliyah finally picked up, her voice low like she was trying to hide from someone. "Still nothing. I’ve tried everyone, Ash. They’re not answering. They’ve all pulled out."

My heart dropped, but I didn’t let it show. Not even to her. I pressed my nails into my thigh, stared hard at the mirror. "What about Paul? He owes me. He wouldn’t dare ignore me."

"I messaged him again. He’s read it, but he hasn’t replied. It’s like... it’s like everyone’s scared. Like they don’t want to be seen working with you."
