Chapter 3

Author: Circle Master
Cassian must have felt the change in me through the bond.

He brought Dora straight home.

The moment Dora saw me, she threw herself at me, rubbing her cheek against mine like she'd done a thousand times before.

Cassian hung back. Awkward. He worked a strained smile onto his face.

"Eva, I shouldn't have spoken to you like that earlier."

"Dora getting sick — that's on me too."

"I was the one who agreed to let her go north in the first place..."

I gave a small nod, then pried Dora off me and set her down. My face stayed cold.

She looked up at me, hurt. I had never been cold with her, not once.

This was the daughter I had bled for. Who I had nearly died to bring into the world. I had spoiled her every day of her life.

"Eva? What's wrong?"

"Are you not feeling well?"

I lifted a hand and cut him off.

"I'm fine."

"You, on the other hand, are looking very well taken care of. A lot healthier than when I left."

A small flinch ran through him.

I didn't give him room to recover. I kept going.

"I really should thank Kayla."

"For taking such good care of my husband while I was away."

He let out an awkward laugh and stepped toward me, arms half-open like he wanted to pull me in.

"Eva, come on. She's a colleague. That's it."

The second he came close enough, I caught it. The thick, sharp bite of rose perfume.

I have never liked that smell. I have always hated anything strongly perfumed.

Cassian knew this. Wherever I was, anything scented got tossed before I came near it.

But this time, I came home faster than he expected. He hadn't had time.

I shoved him off me.

"Cassian. You smell like someone else."

He froze. His hand flew up to his shirt and he started sniffing himself, scrambling.

Under my stare, he tried.

"Eva, Kayla said the office needed something to make it feel warmer. Some kind of scent..."

"You and Dora coming home — I was so happy I forgot to wash it off..."

"Let me go clean up. Right now."

I watched his back as he hurried away. Pathetic.

Then I looked at Dora, who didn't know what to do with herself.

She had never, in her short life, heard me speak in a voice this cold.

The pressure of an alpha aura — my alpha aura — pinned her where she stood. She started trembling.

"Dora. Why are you still standing there?"

She turned and bolted for her bedroom.

The living room was empty. Just me.

Quiet. Strange. Sickening.

A dozen feelings tangled together. I sank down onto the couch — and caught the smell of something else.

I reached under the cushion before I could think about it. My hand came back with a piece of sexy lace lingerie.

The scent of mating still clung to it.

Cassian's scent. Layered with hers — Kayla's.

I folded the thing up, calm. I sealed it inside an airtight bag.

I wanted that scent preserved. Perfectly.

I wanted to make sure that pair of arrogant little fools went down so hard that no pack on this continent would touch them.

I shoved her off me.She hit the floor on her backside. She blinked up at me. Stunned. She had never expected me — me, of all people, the mother who had spoiled her her whole life — to push her like that. She forgot to even start crying. She just sat there on the floor, staring.Cassian was the first to react. He stepped forward and grabbed my hand."Eva, what is it? Did something happen today?"I didn't answer. I just looked at him. Calmly.Kayla scooped Dora up, then turned on me, scolding."Eva! How could you treat a child like that!""Whatever your problem is, you don't take it out on a child! That is not how a mother behaves!""No wonder she doesn't want to be around you!"Kayla's words were enough to make Cassian's brow tighten."Eva, Kayla's right!""No matter what's going on with you, you do not lay hands on our daughter!""This postpartum depression of yours has gotten out of control!""You are not going into the pack offices for a while. Kayla will handle everything."Listeni

Once my position and the pack's chain of command were locked in, I had Cassian's office and Kayla's office stripped to the walls. The whole place reeked of Kayla's perfume.Sharp. Cloying. Sickening.I scowled and started throwing their things out, piece by piece.Standing in Cassian's office, my stomach turned.I had never imagined Cassian could be this kind of man.The devoted husband act, perfected for me. The rutting boyfriend act, perfected for somebody else. The framed photo on his desk wasn't of us anymore. It was of him and Kayla. The one of us, the one that should have been there, was lying face-down in the wastebasket of Kayla's office.I pulled open Cassian's desk drawer. Plush toys. Stuffed animals. A whole drawer of them.I picked one up. I tore it apart in my hands. Each toy had been embroidered with the same thing — Cassian's initials and Kayla's, side by side.I'm not interested in plushies, but everyone has heard of the trend by now. Some couples don't want children. I drew a long breath and looked across the table at every single one of them."As you can see, Cassian has betrayed me.""And the second scent on that fabric — I think you all know exactly whose it is."Cold sweat broke out on the foreheads of my Elders.A few of them cut their eyes away. Guilty. So at least some of them had known about Cassian and Kayla all along. And not a single one of them had told me.This was the pack I had built. The pack I had bled for. And every last one of them had been complicit. The fury raised my aura by another notch in the room."How long?"The chamber went so quiet it stopped feeling real. The only sound was my fingers tapping the table. When no one answered, I stood and walked a slow circle around the room.Partly to bleed off the rage. Partly to see who was avoiding my eyes."Speak now, and I'll let you keep your place in this pack.""If I find out later that you knew and stayed silent — don't expect mercy."Cassian was the Alpha on paper. Maybe it was the guilt of how badly he had let me down.Or maybe it was the bone-deep nervousness of a man who had just been caught.Whatever it was, the next morning Cassian came at me with a tenderness that didn't belong in our marriage anymore.A tenderness that felt familiar and foreign at the same time.I hadn't felt anything like it since Dora was born.He acted like the man I'd just mated five years ago.He stood behind me at the mirror and combed my hair, careful, slow. He pressed a soft kiss to the corner of my mouth. His voice came out low and warm."Eva. These last few days with Dora must have worn you out."I looked at the woman in the mirror. There was no warmth in her eyes. Only ice.I gave a small nod and pushed him off me.That clearly threw him.Once upon a time, I'd loved nothing more than him brushing my hair. Loved nothing more than his kiss.I looked up at him. His eyes were full of confusion. Hurt. But only for a second. Then a doting smile slid into place. He hoo
