Chapter 3

Author: Daphne
On the top floor of the club, only one conference room had its lights on.

When I pushed the door open, Julian was sitting at one end of a long table.

Nathan sat across from him.

Around them were representatives from six hedge funds and two creditors.

When Julian saw me, his face darkened.

“What are you doing here?”

“I missed you.”

“Elena Bell.”

He almost never used my full name.

I walked over and sat down next to him.

“The plane left.”

He stared at me for a few seconds. Then, without a word, he took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

“Stay close to me.”

Nathan laughed.

“At a time like this, you’re still fussing over a woman?”

A lawyer slid an agreement in front of Julian.

“The Mercer family relinquishes control and acknowledges material omissions in the group’s financial statements. In exchange, the creditors will hold off on calling in the loans, and the witnesses in the case against the two Mercer brothers will revise their statements.”

Julian flipped to the last page.

His expression grew colder and colder.

“It’s not just the company you’re after.”

The agreement also covered his personally held shares, several assets held in family trusts, and a security interest in his parents’ house.

Nathan picked up his glass.

“Do you have any other choice?”

He looked at me.

“At least Ms. Bell’s lifestyle doesn’t have to suffer.”

A credit card slid across the table to me.

“I can keep paying for her apartment, her travel, and her shopping.”

I glanced down at it.

Before I could say a word, Julian picked up the card.

Snap.

He broke it in half.

“She doesn’t need it.”

Nathan’s smile faded.

“You can’t even hold on to your own company right now.”

“That still doesn’t give you the right to touch her.”

The room went quiet.

I turned to look at Julian.

He’d gone all night without asking why I’d come back.

And he definitely hadn’t asked what I could do.

To him, I was his girlfriend first and foremost.

Not a bargaining chip. Not a resource.

Just then, the door burst open.

Sophia rushed in.

“Don’t sign it!”

She handed Julian her phone.

“Dad says he’d rather sell the house. Alex and Daniel sent word through their lawyers too. They don’t want you surrendering control of the company just to get them out of trouble.”

Nathan raised a hand impatiently.

Two security guards blocked the door.

When Sophia noticed the holsters at their hips, she briefly went pale.

But the next second, she grabbed my arm and pushed me behind her.

“Get out of here the first chance you get.”

That surprised me.

“Didn’t you want me gone more than anyone?”

“Would you stop talking?”

Nathan laughed.

“Nobody’s going anywhere.”

Julian stood up and put himself in front of both me and Sophia.

“I’ll sign.”

Sophia grabbed him.

“Julian!”

Julian kept his eyes on Nathan.

“I’ll sign. Let them go.”

Nathan leaned back in his chair.

“That was the deal a minute ago.

“It isn’t anymore.”

Julian’s expression turned to ice.

But he still picked up the pen.

I looked at his hand.

For three years, he’d tied my shoelaces, paid for my shopping more times than I could count, and made sure breakfast and a car were ready before I even woke up.

Now he was ready to trade everything he had to get me out.

Suddenly, I didn’t want him to sign.

Before the pen touched the paper, I put my hand over his.

Julian turned.

“Elena?”

“You’ve protected me for three years.”

I took the pen from him.

“This time, it’s my turn.”

I dug my phone out of my bag.

I still had a number saved in my phone that I hadn’t called in three years.

It rang only once before someone picked up.

I heard Margaret draw a quick, sharp breath.

“Elena?”

I leaned back in my chair and looked at Nathan.

“Cut off all future funding from North Shore Capital to these funds.”

Heads snapped up on both sides of the long table.

I kept going.

“And before midnight tonight, buy up as many of Mercer Group’s senior bonds as you can.”

Margaret was silent for two seconds.

Then she laughed.

“At last. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Six months later, the Mercer Group had fully emerged from the crisis. Its stock price didn’t stage a miraculous comeback. It just climbed steadily back to a reasonable range.Julian was the happiest about that.He said keeping the company alive mattered more than having a good story to tell.Same with North Shore Capital.I never went back to being chief investment officer. The chairwoman’s office sat empty half the time. But whenever I actually needed to make a decision, I showed up.One afternoon, I wrapped up the quarterly meeting at three.Margaret glanced at the time.“Leaving this early today?”“Julian’s taking me to dinner.”“Isn’t there a family dinner tonight?”“We’re going shopping first.”She smiled and shook her head. The moment I walked out of the building, I saw Julian leaning against the car.He opened the door for me.“Where to?”“Fifth Avenue.”“Another bag?”“Got a problem with that?”“Nope.”He got in and handed me his wallet.“The card’s in there.”I took it out and

In the first month after the wedding, I went into the North Shore Capital office only six days.Margaret had stopped trying to talk me into more meetings. She’d learned to bring me all the decisions that actually required my input at once and let the existing systems handle the rest. That was a lot easier than the old days, when I controlled everything myself. One day, I wrapped up a meeting early. When the elevator reached the lobby, I saw Julian’s car parked right out front.I got in.“What are you doing here?”“Picking you up from work.”“I have a driver.”“I know.”“Then why’d you come?”“Because I want to.”That answer sounded familiar. It was the same thing he’d said three years ago when he gave me my first black card.I’d asked why. He’d answered, “Because I want to.”When we got home that night, Sophia was in our living room unwrapping presents.“You’re here again?”“Mom asked me to drop something off.”“So why are you still here?”“You’re my sister-in-law now. Do I need permis

The wedding was held at the Mercer Group’s newly reopened flagship hotel. The whole top floor and the terrace were reserved for family and friends.People from North Shore Capital came.So did the Mercer Group’s executives. The people who’d given statements during the investigation sat in the back rows.Nobody needed to apologize for anything that day.All the old scores had already been settled.Helen slipped the emerald ring onto my finger herself. When Richard gave his toast, he didn’t say I’d saved the Mercer family.Instead, he said, “Thank you, Elena, for choosing to come back that day, when you could have just walked away.”Standing next to Julian, I suddenly realized those words meant more to me than any compliment.Alex and Daniel were in charge of keeping an eye on Sophia, and with good reason. She’d already snuck over to my gift table to check out my new bag.“Put it down.”I called to her from across the room. She turned around.“I’m just looking!”“Where’s your own?”“Mine

A week before the wedding, Sophia and I went back to Fifth Avenue. The same store.Chloe recognized me right away and was so eager to help she seemed almost nervous.“Ms. Bell, the brand has a gift for you.”She had someone bring out a new bag that had just arrived in New York.I really did love it.“How much?”Chloe smiled even more politely.“There’s no charge. The brand is hoping you’ll attend their event next season.”I put the bag back.“No, thanks.”She froze.Sophia was used to this by now.“She doesn’t do free.”Chloe looked a little lost.“Why not?”I handed over Julian’s new black card.“Free is no fun.”The card reader gave a bright little chime.Approved.When I heard it, I couldn’t help smiling.Back when all this started, I’d been standing right here.Back then, the screen had said declined. That was the first time I realized Julian might really go broke. Now, I could easily have paid for it myself. But I still wanted to use his card. The difference wasn’t money. It was k

After we got engaged, I officially resumed my duties as chairwoman of North Shore Capital. Two days of meetings a week. The rest of the time, I stayed away.In the very first month, someone asked if I’d “lost my ambition.”I finished reading the article and closed the page.Three years ago, I would have explained myself. Now I couldn’t be bothered.Margaret, on the other hand, was very pleased.“You’re so much easier to manage than you used to be.”“Did you forget who owns the controlling stake?”“I remember.”“And you still say things like that?”“Because now you actually go home at the end of the day.”I had to admit she had a point.Things were getting back to normal on Julian’s end too.The Mercer Group finished paying down its debt, and the reforms to make its board more independent officially took effect.Alex and Daniel went back to running their own parts of the business.Sophia started working on a hotel branding project and got too busy to bug me every day. There was only one

A month later, Sophia suddenly said she wanted to take me to the Mercer Group’s flagship hotel.“What for?”“To see the renovation.”“Why would I want to see a renovation?”“Don’t you have great taste?”“I have expensive taste.”“Even better.”She shoved me into the car.The car stopped at the hotel’s back entrance. The elevator went straight to the top floor. The second the doors opened, I knew she’d been lying to me.The entire top-floor ballroom had been redecorated.White flowers lined the way from the entrance to the terrace. There were dozens of antique candelabras.Beyond them, Manhattan was lit up for the night. Before the crisis, the Mercer family had planned to throw a gala for the company’s anniversary. Then it was all called off.Now the gala was back on.And it was even more over the top than they’d originally planned.I walked over to the gift table. The first thing I saw was that bag.The one I didn’t get to buy back when all this started.“Who paid for it?” I asked.Sop
