Chapter 2

Author: Daphne
First thing the next morning, the family started taking stock of everything they could mortgage or sell.

The wine cellar, the collections, several vacation homes. All of it went on the list.

I sat on the bedroom rug, packing.

If Julian wanted me gone, I was at least taking my favorite things with me.

Sophia pushed the door open just as I was stuffing my jewelry box into a suitcase.

She stood in the doorway, her expression hardening.

“So you’re really leaving?”

“Your brother told me to go.”

“He told you to go because he wants to protect you.”

I looked up.

“I know.”

She suddenly marched over and snatched the plane ticket off the bed.

“What do you know? My dad resigned. My other two brothers are still under investigation. Julian’s even selling off his personal assets, but he hasn’t touched a cent in the account he set aside for you.”

I didn’t say anything.

The more she talked, the redder her eyes got.

“Don’t you love money more than anything? Then take the money and go. And don’t come back to drag him down.”

“Sophia.”

I had no idea how long Julian had been standing outside the door.

His voice was cold.

“Put that down.”

“Julian!”

“Put it down.”

Sophia clenched her jaw and threw the ticket back on the bed.

Julian came over to me.

“The flight’s been moved up to ten.”

“That soon?”

“Yeah.”

“What about you?”

“I’m meeting Nathan.”

I knew that name.

Nathan Cross, the friend Julian used to trust more than anyone.

Over the past year, the two of them had rarely been seen together in public, but Julian had never told me why.

Ten minutes later, Ethan Brooks, one of Nathan’s people, showed up in person.

He wore a crisp suit, and he was so polite it was irritating.

“Mr. Cross will be expecting you at the club at eight tonight for one last round of negotiations.”

He handed Julian a file, then glanced at me.

“Ms. Bell is here too, I see.”

Julian stepped between us and blocked his view.

“Say what you came to say.”

Ethan smiled.

“I’d just heard your girlfriend was beautiful.”

He paused.

“If Mercer Group goes under, Mr. Cross would be happy to take care of her expenses from now on.”

Before I could even react, Julian punched him.

Ethan staggered back two steps, blood already pouring from his nose.

Everyone in the living room froze.

“Julian!” Helen cried.

He shook out his hand.

“Get out.”

Ethan wiped the blood from his nose and actually smiled.

“Losing control is the last thing you should be doing right now.”

Julian took a step forward.

“Say one more word.”

Ethan finally stopped smiling.

“Eight o’clock tonight. If you don’t show, things will get worse for your brothers.”

Once the door closed, Julian turned to me.

“Go to the airport. Now.”

His assistant, Owen, put me in the car.

For the first time, I made the entire drive without so much as glancing at a single store.

As we got close to the airport, I asked, “If he signs tonight, what does he lose?”

Owen kept his hands on the wheel and didn’t answer for a long moment.

“Tell me.”

“Control of the company.”

“What else?”

“Almost all of his personal assets. His seat on the board. The family’s control of the flagship hotels. And... they’ve promised that if Mr. Mercer signs, the witnesses testifying against his brothers will retract parts of their statements.”

I stared straight ahead.

“So his plan is to go in there and lose?”

Owen said nothing.

That was an answer.

The car pulled up outside the private terminal.

The staff were already waiting.

I got out, took two steps, and stopped.

Three years ago, I left North Shore Capital because too many people thought that as long as I could still work, I should keep working.

Julian was different.

He never once asked why I wasn’t out making money.

And now, when he was about to lose everything, he was still trying to make sure my life stayed exactly the same.

I turned around.

“Take me back to the city.”

Owen looked alarmed.

“Ms. Bell, these are Mr. Mercer’s orders.”

“Then you can keep following his orders.”

I flagged down a car that had just dropped someone off.

“I’ll get back on my own.”

Six months later, the Mercer Group had fully emerged from the crisis. Its stock price didn’t stage a miraculous comeback. It just climbed steadily back to a reasonable range.Julian was the happiest about that.He said keeping the company alive mattered more than having a good story to tell.Same with North Shore Capital.I never went back to being chief investment officer. The chairwoman’s office sat empty half the time. But whenever I actually needed to make a decision, I showed up.One afternoon, I wrapped up the quarterly meeting at three.Margaret glanced at the time.“Leaving this early today?”“Julian’s taking me to dinner.”“Isn’t there a family dinner tonight?”“We’re going shopping first.”She smiled and shook her head. The moment I walked out of the building, I saw Julian leaning against the car.He opened the door for me.“Where to?”“Fifth Avenue.”“Another bag?”“Got a problem with that?”“Nope.”He got in and handed me his wallet.“The card’s in there.”I took it out and

In the first month after the wedding, I went into the North Shore Capital office only six days.Margaret had stopped trying to talk me into more meetings. She’d learned to bring me all the decisions that actually required my input at once and let the existing systems handle the rest. That was a lot easier than the old days, when I controlled everything myself. One day, I wrapped up a meeting early. When the elevator reached the lobby, I saw Julian’s car parked right out front.I got in.“What are you doing here?”“Picking you up from work.”“I have a driver.”“I know.”“Then why’d you come?”“Because I want to.”That answer sounded familiar. It was the same thing he’d said three years ago when he gave me my first black card.I’d asked why. He’d answered, “Because I want to.”When we got home that night, Sophia was in our living room unwrapping presents.“You’re here again?”“Mom asked me to drop something off.”“So why are you still here?”“You’re my sister-in-law now. Do I need permis

The wedding was held at the Mercer Group’s newly reopened flagship hotel. The whole top floor and the terrace were reserved for family and friends.People from North Shore Capital came.So did the Mercer Group’s executives. The people who’d given statements during the investigation sat in the back rows.Nobody needed to apologize for anything that day.All the old scores had already been settled.Helen slipped the emerald ring onto my finger herself. When Richard gave his toast, he didn’t say I’d saved the Mercer family.Instead, he said, “Thank you, Elena, for choosing to come back that day, when you could have just walked away.”Standing next to Julian, I suddenly realized those words meant more to me than any compliment.Alex and Daniel were in charge of keeping an eye on Sophia, and with good reason. She’d already snuck over to my gift table to check out my new bag.“Put it down.”I called to her from across the room. She turned around.“I’m just looking!”“Where’s your own?”“Mine

A week before the wedding, Sophia and I went back to Fifth Avenue. The same store.Chloe recognized me right away and was so eager to help she seemed almost nervous.“Ms. Bell, the brand has a gift for you.”She had someone bring out a new bag that had just arrived in New York.I really did love it.“How much?”Chloe smiled even more politely.“There’s no charge. The brand is hoping you’ll attend their event next season.”I put the bag back.“No, thanks.”She froze.Sophia was used to this by now.“She doesn’t do free.”Chloe looked a little lost.“Why not?”I handed over Julian’s new black card.“Free is no fun.”The card reader gave a bright little chime.Approved.When I heard it, I couldn’t help smiling.Back when all this started, I’d been standing right here.Back then, the screen had said declined. That was the first time I realized Julian might really go broke. Now, I could easily have paid for it myself. But I still wanted to use his card. The difference wasn’t money. It was k

  • When My Rich Boyfriend Went Broke, I Stopped Pretending   Chapter 15

After we got engaged, I officially resumed my duties as chairwoman of North Shore Capital. Two days of meetings a week. The rest of the time, I stayed away.In the very first month, someone asked if I’d “lost my ambition.”I finished reading the article and closed the page.Three years ago, I would have explained myself. Now I couldn’t be bothered.Margaret, on the other hand, was very pleased.“You’re so much easier to manage than you used to be.”“Did you forget who owns the controlling stake?”“I remember.”“And you still say things like that?”“Because now you actually go home at the end of the day.”I had to admit she had a point.Things were getting back to normal on Julian’s end too.The Mercer Group finished paying down its debt, and the reforms to make its board more independent officially took effect.Alex and Daniel went back to running their own parts of the business.Sophia started working on a hotel branding project and got too busy to bug me every day. There was only one

A month later, Sophia suddenly said she wanted to take me to the Mercer Group’s flagship hotel.“What for?”“To see the renovation.”“Why would I want to see a renovation?”“Don’t you have great taste?”“I have expensive taste.”“Even better.”She shoved me into the car.The car stopped at the hotel’s back entrance. The elevator went straight to the top floor. The second the doors opened, I knew she’d been lying to me.The entire top-floor ballroom had been redecorated.White flowers lined the way from the entrance to the terrace. There were dozens of antique candelabras.Beyond them, Manhattan was lit up for the night. Before the crisis, the Mercer family had planned to throw a gala for the company’s anniversary. Then it was all called off.Now the gala was back on.And it was even more over the top than they’d originally planned.I walked over to the gift table. The first thing I saw was that bag.The one I didn’t get to buy back when all this started.“Who paid for it?” I asked.Sop
