Chapter 3

Penulis: Dawn Trueman
I turned around. "Ronan isn't one of the groomsmen."

"I'm adding him," Seren said. "It's one extra person. What's the big deal?"

Ronan stood beside her with his hands in his pockets. "If Adrian doesn't want me in the wedding party, forget it. It's not like I'm dying to be a groomsman."

Seren glanced at him. "Stop saying that."

Then she looked back at me. "Adrian, it's just a suit."

Just a suit. Just a few lines in my vows. Just a backdrop. Just a pair of headphones.

Somehow, everything that mattered to me became just something the moment Ronan wanted a say in it.

I unlocked my phone and sent Seren the contact information for the menswear shop handling the groomsmen's suits.

Her expression finally softened. "See? Was that so hard?"

I said nothing.

By the time I got home, the living room was buried in boxes. There were wedding favor boxes, place cards, the guest book, and the thick wedding album I'd spent weeks putting together.

It held our whole history, from grade school to high school and then college. I'd arranged every photo in chronological order myself.

On the first page was a picture of Seren leaning slightly toward me, holding an open textbook upright to shield me from the boys behind us who wouldn't stop teasing me. A breeze had caught a few loose strands of hair by her cheek.

On the back of the photo, I'd written a single line. "She was the first part of the world I learned to hear."

Back then, I'd truly believed that.

The doorbell rang. When I opened the door, Ronan was standing outside with two assistants from the wedding planning company behind him. He lifted the garment bag in his hand with a grin.

"Hey, Adrian. I came to pick up my groomsman's suit. Figured I'd see if there was anything else you needed help with while I'm here."

I stayed in the doorway. "There isn't."

Ronan peered past my shoulder. "Wow. You've got a lot of stuff in there."

Before I could respond, he squeezed past me and walked inside. I reached out to stop him, while the two assistants hovered awkwardly by the door.

But Ronan had already spotted the album on the coffee table. He picked it up and opened it to the first page.

A laugh escaped him. "Wow, look at you two. You were such dorks as kids."

I walked over, took the album from him, and closed it. "Don't touch that."

Seren's voice came from the doorway. "Ronan, didn't you say you were just here to pick up your suit?"

She'd come too. Ronan immediately pulled his hand back. "Hey, I was only taking a look. Didn't realize Adrian would get so worked up about it."

Seren looked at me. "He was just curious."

I held the album against my chest. "I told him not to touch it."

Her expression hardened. "Adrian, how long are you going to keep this up? No one's trying to take anything away from you."

Ronan lowered his voice. "Seren, leave him alone. Maybe because of his hearing, he's always been a little more protective of his stuff. Makes sense he'd get insecure about people touching things."

Seren didn't correct him. For two full seconds, she said nothing.

I looked at her. Two seconds shouldn't have felt that long. But they were long enough for me to understand. She thought so too.

Then Ronan noticed a pair of cufflinks on the coffee table.

"Oh, hey." He picked one up. "Adrian, can I have these? They'd look pretty sharp with my suit."

They weren't spare cufflinks. I'd gotten them specifically to wear with my wedding shirt.

They were black onyx set in silver, each one engraved with the delicate outline of an evergreen branch.

I'd loved that design for years. Seren knew exactly why. When we were kids, I'd once misheard "evergreen" as "everlasting".

After that, every year on my birthday, Seren gave me something with an evergreen worked into the design. And every single time, she'd make sure I could see her lips as she said the same word—"everlasting".

Now Ronan was holding one of them between his fingers, grinning as he asked if he could have the pair.

"No." There was no hesitation in my answer.

Seren walked over. "If he likes them, just let him have them. We can rush-order another pair before the wedding."

I looked up at her. "Seren, you picked those out yourself."

She froze for a second.

Ronan glanced at me, then at her. "Wait, you chose these for him? Now I want them even more."

He held the cufflink against the sleeve of his suit, admiring the effect. "What do you think? Looks good on me, right?"

Seren didn't answer. But she didn't tell him to put it back, either.

Suddenly, the wedding album in my hands felt unbearably heavy. My wrists actually ached from holding it.

I lowered my head and placed the album back inside its box. Then I took out my phone and messaged the wedding planner. "If I want to cancel, I have until 5:00 pm today to confirm, right?"

Her reply came almost immediately. "That's correct."

I hadn't even finished typing my response when Seren suddenly snatched the phone out of my hand. "Who are you texting?"

The screen was still lit. She saw the message. The entire living room fell silent.

Seren stared at me, her voice dropping. "Adrian, what the hell is this?"

  • When My Right Ear Heard the Truth   Chapter 10

A year later, I started a new job.I was designing educational programs for a hearing rehabilitation center, which meant I spent most of my days around kids. Some cried at the slightest thing, while some barely spoke. Some stuffed their hearing aids into their pockets the second no one was looking and stubbornly refused to put them back on.Whenever that happened, I'd crouch down and talk to them at eye level, always making sure I stood where they could hear me best.I never rushed them. I never pushed either.Sometimes Vesper would watch me and laugh. "At this point, you're better at this than I am."I grinned at her. "Then I guess I should have your job."She handed me whatever folder she was carrying. "Be my guest, Mr. Corbett."That made me laugh.Life moved on quietly. There was no dramatic moment when everything suddenly became better. One morning, I simply woke up and realized I couldn't remember the last time Seren had kept me awake at night. She came by the center a

Seren didn't come after me that day. For the next week, though, she texted me every morning.Sometimes it was nothing more than a "good morning".Sometimes it was a photo. There was one of the new headphones she'd bought and then a replacement pair of the cufflinks, identical to the originals. And finally, the page of vows Ronan had scribbled all over. She'd had someone print out a new copy before sending me a picture."I got the original words back," she typed.I stared at the photograph."Seren, thank you for being my right ear all these years."Once, every word of that had been true. But that was a long time ago.I didn't reply. That weekend, I volunteered at a community event for children with hearing loss. Vesper had invited me. She said a lot of kids struggled when they first started wearing hearing aids, especially because they were afraid their classmates would make fun of them.As I reached the activity room, I saw a little girl standing near the doorway, crying with

Word that the wedding was off eventually got around. Our group chat with mutual friends was active all day. Some people wanted to know if we'd had a fight. Some told me not to make a decision I'd regret.A few messaged me privately."For what it's worth, Ronan really was crossing a lot of lines toward the end."I read the messages but didn't reply. That evening, Seren's mother, Karen Walsh, called me. "Adrian, I'm not calling to pressure you just because I'm older, and I'm not going to beg you to take Seren back."She let out a quiet sigh. "I just want to hear it from you. Are you and Seren really over?"I looked out at the night beyond my window. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Arden."There was a brief silence on the other end."You don't owe me an apology. I know my daughter. She stopped respecting your boundaries because she got too comfortable with how much you'd put up with. She started treating your patience like something she was entitled to."I said nothing.Karen continued, "I've

Vesper took my jacket from me as naturally as if she'd done it a hundred times."Is the ringing in your right ear still bothering you today?"I touched my ear. "It's better than it was a couple of days ago."Behind us, Seren's voice turned cold. "Adrian, who is she?"I glanced back. "My audiologist."Vesper gave Seren a polite nod. "Hello."Seren didn't return the greeting. Her gaze had settled instead on my suit jacket draped over Vesper's arm. "Do audiologists usually provide this much personal service? Carrying a man's jacket around for him?"Vesper smiled, completely unbothered. "Mr. Corbett just finished an intensive round of physical therapy on his right shoulder. His doctor doesn't want him lifting or putting too much strain on that arm for the next two hours. I was already walking with him, so I offered to carry his jacket."Seren's expression shifted. "When did you get so comfortable letting other people take care of you?"There was an edge to her voice that sounded s

On my third day back at my own place, Seren called me for the first time. I let my phone ring.A message came through a moment later. "I've managed to keep the wedding situation contained for now. When are you coming back? We need to talk."I replied with just two words. "We don't."A few minutes later, another message appeared. "Enough, Adrian."I stared at it and suddenly laughed. My hearing hadn't been great lately. Whenever I got stressed, the ringing in my right ear tended to linger.Seren used to know that. Whenever it happened, she'd lower her voice around me. But my apartment had been quiet these past few days—quiet enough that, for the first time in a long time, I could finally hear myself think. That afternoon, I went to the hospital for a follow-up appointment. After reviewing my test results, the doctor told me everything was stable."We can make some adjustments to your hearing aid. Have you been under a lot of stress lately?""I was."The doctor looked at me. "An

The wedding planner was silent for a few seconds before texting, "Mr. Corbett, are you sure?"I looked at the broken headphones jutting out of the trash bag. "I'm sure."After I sent that message, I didn't feel much of anything.I just started going through the boxes in the living room, one at a time. The wedding favors went into a box to be returned.I tore up the place cards. The guest book went into the bottom drawer of a cabinet. I intended to throw away the wedding album too.But when I reached the last page, my hand froze. The photo had been taken the day we got engaged. Seren was standing on my right, her head lowered as she carefully adjusted the hearing aid behind my ear. There was such tenderness in her eyes.I stared at the picture for two seconds. Then I closed the album.A key turned in the lock. Seren was back. She walked in, took one look at the open boxes scattered across the living room, and her expression darkened. "What are you doing?"I taped the last box of
