Chapter 3

Author: Muddle Egg
Anne, however, snorted dismissively.

"Fine. Go ahead and resign. I’ll be sure to approve it.

"You're so full of it these days."

Then she turned and went back to the bedroom.

The view of her back told me she didn’t believe a word I said about leaving.

Early next morning, I had just arrived at the office when I heard a few new hires gossiping about the celebration last night.

"Leo, you weren't here at the party yesterday, so you didn't see how pleased Shawn was.

"He mixed up the banner and nothing happened. He even spent the whole night sitting next to the boss, closer than Sean did."

"You'd better be careful lately. Don't accidentally offend him."

"When do you think he'll officially move up the ladder?"

I set my mug on the desk and replied, "Soon."

They looked as if they'd seen a ghost and one of them laughed awkwardly.

"Hey Sean, we were just joking around. Don't take it seriously..."

I only smiled.

Clicks of shoes echoed down the hallway.

Shawn walked over carrying a stack of files.

His voice was deliberately loud, as if he wanted everyone to hear.

"Sean, please hand over the Cloudview project to me. Anne said I'll be handling it from here on out."

I looked at the mocking expression on his face and said nothing.

I transferred all the documents to him and signed the handover form.

He leaned in and lowered his voice.

"Sean, I didn't want to steal your credit, but Anne insisted on giving it to me. I can't help it."

Then he turned and walked away, satisfaction practically radiating from his back.

I turned on my computer, printed the resignation letter I'd written the night before, and headed for Anne's office.

Whispers followed behind me.

I could imagine what they were saying. Surely nothing more than I’d lost again and I wasn’t as good as Shawn.

In the past, those comments would have hurt, but now, I just didn't care anymore.

When I entered the office, Anne was explaining the project to Shawn.

I found it somewhat amusing, because everything she was telling him was information I'd reported to her myself.

She was handing someone else the fruits of my labor, piece by piece.

I handed her my resignation letter.

The moment she read it, her eyes narrowed.

"You're jealous of Shawny, no? You're really going this far over it?"

Even now, she still thought this was about jealousy.

My voice remained calm.

"Please sign it, Ms. Nash."

She picked up a pen with a cold smile.

"You think quitting will give you leverage over me?"

She scribbled her name across the page and threw it back at me.

"As you wish!"

Having achieved what I came in for, I turned and left.

As soon as I returned to my desk, a notification popped up in the company group chat.

[Notice: Effective immediately, due to Sean Reed's recent unstable condition, the Cloudview project is being reassigned to Shawn. All departments are to cooperate fully.]

I gripped my phone tightly as I read “unstable condition.”

She couldn't even be bothered to invent a decent excuse, and deliberately made a spectacle out of me in front of the entire company.

Everyone looked at me, but I kept my composure.

I was the first to reply in the group chat, [Got it.]

After work, Anne didn't come home, so I sat on the sofa waiting for her.

Then I saw Shawn's new social media post.

[My godsend boss stayed up late helping me sort through the project. I’m sticking with her forever!]

I let out a cold laugh and went straight to bed.

Anne didn't return until early the next morning.

As she took off her shoes, she said, “Worked too late last night, so I just slept at the office. It's been a whole day. You must be over it by now, right?

“Don't act out anymore. Since you've already resigned, let's go register our marriage later. I'll support you from now on."

By the time she finished speaking, she'd walked over to the sofa and bent down to hug me.

A strange perfume hit me first. It was Shawn's scent and it made me feel sick to my stomach.

I raised a hand to stop her.

"Anne, let's break up."

Anne didn’t look too pleased when she saw us coming out together.Hayden glanced at her, then lowered her head and spoke to me.“I’ll head off first. See you tomorrow.“If anything happens, call me.”Anne walked over.“Sean, I’ve already made Shawn pay for what he did.“I realize I was wrong. I was blind. I mistook fool’s gold for the real thing.“I’ll make it up to you. Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you. Can you give me one more chance?”I raised an eyebrow.“Anything I want?”She nodded firmly, a glimmer of hope appearing in her eyes.“Yes.”“Then what I want is for you to stay away from me.”Anne took a step back, her voice trembling.“Sean, we’ve been together for nine years. I don’t believe you can just move on like this!“I really love you.”As she spoke, she suddenly remembered something and quickly took something out of her pocket. It was the little tiger charm I had given her years ago.“Sean, look. I’ve put this back on.”I looked at the dust caked on

I found a new apartment to rent, not far from my new company.I only brought a few basic clothes with me. Almost everything Anne had given me over the years was left behind. My new colleagues were all kind, and I settled in quickly.A few days later, while I was working overtime, carefully checking through some data, my phone rang. It was a call from an old colleague.“Sean, you really joined Cloudview?”“Yeah.”“Have you heard? Anne sued Shawn.”My hand froze on the mouse.“He took money from a rival company and deliberately sabotaged the partnership.“I heard he was sentenced to two years and had to pay a hefty fine too!”“Sean, Ms. Nash also corrected all the performance records that were previously wrongly credited to him.“Aren’t you really going to consider coming back?”My voice was calm and steady as I said, “No, I’m not”After hanging up, I was unfazed and simply continued working.A cup of coffee appeared on my desk.It was Hayden.“Everyone’s already off wo

Anne sat frozen in her chair. Her hands were clenched into fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white.Shawn was crying foul.“He’s clearly using his position to carry out a personal vendetta!“I don’t believe Hayden Quint, the CEO, would allow him to do something like this!”A thought suddenly crossed Anne’s mind. That was right!Even if Sean had gone to Cloudview just to get back at them, Anne didn’t believe Hayden Quint would tolerate him damaging the company’s interests after learning the truth of the incident. All she had to do was tell Hayden that Sean had sabotaged the company’s project out of personal resentment. In her mind, Sean would definitely be fired again, and then he would have no choice but to come back to her! When I walked out of the clubhouse, the sky outside was bright and clear. The frustration that had been weighing heavily on my chest had finally been lifted.Actually, when I first began working with Cloudview on the project, I met the person in

Anne stopped in her tracks. She pulled out her phone and opened her conversation with Sean.“Let’s go get our marriage license tomorrow afternoon.”She thought he should have cooled down by now. After all, she had already chosen to let the matter go.But the chat remained completely silent. She placed her phone face down on the table, as if doing so could help her avoid facing something. Then, she turned her attention to helping Shawn organize the project data.It was already late by the time they finished. She ended up staying overnight at the office. The next morning, in a clubhouse top-floor private room, Anne arrived early with Shawn. He seemed nervous as he said, “I wonder what the new manager at Cloudview is like. What if he’s even harder to deal with than the last one?”Anne patted the back of his hand reassuringly.“Don’t worry. I looked into him. The new guy is a young man, and it seems he graduated from the same university as us.“It should be fine.”The moment s

After the statement was released, Anne looked utterly exhausted. She pinched the bridge of her nose and looked at Shawn, who still had his head lowered.“I’ll let it slide this time, but next time, pay closer attention to your work and don’t trust anyone.”Even after hearing that, Shawn still looked aggrieved. As usual, he tried acting like a spoiled child.“Oh, Anne…”But she waved him away, signaling for him to leave. She was deeply annoyed, especially because of the look Sean had given her before he left.It was as though she had truly driven Sean to the edge.Clearly, Sean had been the one who started it.If she hadn't let Shawn hit back, word would’ve spread that she was playing favorites.Did Sean really think she wouldn’t stand up for Shawn? She had only wanted to knock Sean down a peg.Over the years, Sean had climbed the corporate ladder step by step, gaining more and more core projects and company resources. At meetings, some employees had even begun watching his

Anne straightened up, with a faint, knowing smile on her face.“Stop making a scene, Sean.“We've been together for nine years. Everyone in our circle knows that.“Besides, who would want a man in his thirties?“You know it as well as I do, without the company—and without me—you're nothing."So these were her true thoughts. Even though I'd already given up, my heart still ached as if pierced.I forced down the lump rising in my throat."I'm not messing around. I’ve already canceled the appointment. It was supposed to be that day…"Before I could finish, Anne's phone rang. Her voice immediately softened when she answered it."What is it, Shawny? What did Cloudview say?"The panic in the voice on the other end made her expression change instantly. As soon as she hung up, she strode toward the door."We'll postpone getting the marriage license. Something's happened with Shawn."Before I could say a word, she hurried out the door.I laughed at myself. Whenever something happ
