Chapter 4

Author: Muddle Egg
Anne straightened up, with a faint, knowing smile on her face.

“Stop making a scene, Sean.

“We've been together for nine years. Everyone in our circle knows that.

“Besides, who would want a man in his thirties?

“You know it as well as I do, without the company—and without me—you're nothing."

So these were her true thoughts. Even though I'd already given up, my heart still ached as if pierced.

I forced down the lump rising in my throat.

"I'm not messing around. I’ve already canceled the appointment. It was supposed to be that day…"

Before I could finish, Anne's phone rang.

Her voice immediately softened when she answered it.

"What is it, Shawny? What did Cloudview say?"

The panic in the voice on the other end made her expression change instantly.

As soon as she hung up, she strode toward the door.

"We'll postpone getting the marriage license. Something's happened with Shawn."

Before I could say a word, she hurried out the door.

I laughed at myself. Whenever something happened to Shawn, it was enough to shatter Anne's composure.

After a long while, I pulled out my suitcase, packed my belongings, and headed to the office to complete my resignation.

The moment I arrived, the entire office felt heavy with tension.

Leo leaned over, speaking barely above a whisper.

"Sean... something went wrong with the Cloudview project. There was an error in the core data, and the client is furious."

I froze. At that moment, Shawn walked out.

“Sean, Anne wants to see you."

The smile tugging at the corner of his mouth filled me with a bad feeling.

When I entered the office, Anne’s brows were tightly furrowed.

“Did you do it on purpose?”

I blurted out instinctively, “Do what on purpose?”

Shawn's eyes reddened.

“Anne... I sent the files Sean gave me without changing anything. I really don't know why he would do this.

“Even if he doesn't like me, he shouldn't jeopardize the company's interests!”

Just two lighthearted sentences, yet every drop of blood in my body rushed to my head.

I looked at Anne in disbelief.

"You think I deliberately gave him the wrong data?"

Her face remained cold, but she didn't deny it.

My fingertips trembled with anger.

“Anne, when have I ever made a mistake like that?”

Every project I'd handled over the years had been flawless, and she knew better than anyone how meticulous I was.

But after hearing me out, she remained unmoved.

"Nobody but you has a reason to ruin this project. You've been at odds with me lately.

"You couldn't accept that I gave the project to him, so you deliberately set Shawn up to fail, hoping I'd regret it. Am I wrong?”

Her words were like a bucket of ice water poured straight over me.

I stopped expecting her trust. Instead, I let out a cold laugh.

“The transfer records are still there. Check them yourself.”

A trace of hesitation flickered across Anne's face. Just then, Shawn stepped forward in tears and grabbed my arm.

“Sean, it's fine if you don't like me, but why hurt the company?"

I didn't want to watch his pathetic act anymore. I yanked my arm away, accidentally grazing his face with my finger.

I barely used any force, but he clutched his cheek and collapsed onto the floor.

Anne immediately seized my wrist, disgust written all over her face.

"You really are beyond redemption."

She turned to Shawn and said in a deep voice, “Shawny. Get up. Hit him back.”

I couldn't believe it.

Anne couldn't see how fake he was, yet she still allowed Shawn to get away with his behavior.

A flash of satisfaction crossed Shawn's eyes.

I stared at Anne and enunciated each word clearly, “The biggest regret of my life was joining your company."

Smack.

My head snapped to one side.

The room fell silent.

Anne slowly let go of my wrist, but her tone remained as condescending as ever.

“I can't stand by and watch you keep making the same mistakes.”

I glanced at her before turning and walking away.

The moment I got home, I saw the official statement released by the company.

[Sean Reed committed serious professional misconduct by deliberately leaking confidential project data. Effective immediately, his employment has been terminated!]

My head buzzed, and my mind went completely blank.

For Shawn's sake, she was willing to smear my reputation across the entire industry, completely cutting off any path left for me.

Just then, a message from her came in.

[As long as you apologize to Shawny, I'll let you return to the company after the project is over.]

I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms, the sharp sting brought about clarity.

I didn't reply. I picked up my suitcase and walked out of that home without looking back.

Anne didn’t look too pleased when she saw us coming out together.Hayden glanced at her, then lowered her head and spoke to me.“I’ll head off first. See you tomorrow.“If anything happens, call me.”Anne walked over.“Sean, I’ve already made Shawn pay for what he did.“I realize I was wrong. I was blind. I mistook fool’s gold for the real thing.“I’ll make it up to you. Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you. Can you give me one more chance?”I raised an eyebrow.“Anything I want?”She nodded firmly, a glimmer of hope appearing in her eyes.“Yes.”“Then what I want is for you to stay away from me.”Anne took a step back, her voice trembling.“Sean, we’ve been together for nine years. I don’t believe you can just move on like this!“I really love you.”As she spoke, she suddenly remembered something and quickly took something out of her pocket. It was the little tiger charm I had given her years ago.“Sean, look. I’ve put this back on.”I looked at the dust caked on

I found a new apartment to rent, not far from my new company.I only brought a few basic clothes with me. Almost everything Anne had given me over the years was left behind. My new colleagues were all kind, and I settled in quickly.A few days later, while I was working overtime, carefully checking through some data, my phone rang. It was a call from an old colleague.“Sean, you really joined Cloudview?”“Yeah.”“Have you heard? Anne sued Shawn.”My hand froze on the mouse.“He took money from a rival company and deliberately sabotaged the partnership.“I heard he was sentenced to two years and had to pay a hefty fine too!”“Sean, Ms. Nash also corrected all the performance records that were previously wrongly credited to him.“Aren’t you really going to consider coming back?”My voice was calm and steady as I said, “No, I’m not”After hanging up, I was unfazed and simply continued working.A cup of coffee appeared on my desk.It was Hayden.“Everyone’s already off wo

Anne sat frozen in her chair. Her hands were clenched into fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white.Shawn was crying foul.“He’s clearly using his position to carry out a personal vendetta!“I don’t believe Hayden Quint, the CEO, would allow him to do something like this!”A thought suddenly crossed Anne’s mind. That was right!Even if Sean had gone to Cloudview just to get back at them, Anne didn’t believe Hayden Quint would tolerate him damaging the company’s interests after learning the truth of the incident. All she had to do was tell Hayden that Sean had sabotaged the company’s project out of personal resentment. In her mind, Sean would definitely be fired again, and then he would have no choice but to come back to her! When I walked out of the clubhouse, the sky outside was bright and clear. The frustration that had been weighing heavily on my chest had finally been lifted.Actually, when I first began working with Cloudview on the project, I met the person in

Anne stopped in her tracks. She pulled out her phone and opened her conversation with Sean.“Let’s go get our marriage license tomorrow afternoon.”She thought he should have cooled down by now. After all, she had already chosen to let the matter go.But the chat remained completely silent. She placed her phone face down on the table, as if doing so could help her avoid facing something. Then, she turned her attention to helping Shawn organize the project data.It was already late by the time they finished. She ended up staying overnight at the office. The next morning, in a clubhouse top-floor private room, Anne arrived early with Shawn. He seemed nervous as he said, “I wonder what the new manager at Cloudview is like. What if he’s even harder to deal with than the last one?”Anne patted the back of his hand reassuringly.“Don’t worry. I looked into him. The new guy is a young man, and it seems he graduated from the same university as us.“It should be fine.”The moment s

After the statement was released, Anne looked utterly exhausted. She pinched the bridge of her nose and looked at Shawn, who still had his head lowered.“I’ll let it slide this time, but next time, pay closer attention to your work and don’t trust anyone.”Even after hearing that, Shawn still looked aggrieved. As usual, he tried acting like a spoiled child.“Oh, Anne…”But she waved him away, signaling for him to leave. She was deeply annoyed, especially because of the look Sean had given her before he left.It was as though she had truly driven Sean to the edge.Clearly, Sean had been the one who started it.If she hadn't let Shawn hit back, word would’ve spread that she was playing favorites.Did Sean really think she wouldn’t stand up for Shawn?
