Tessa felt her stomach tighten. She wanted to interrupt, to say something, anything to ease the weight of his confession, but she stayed quiet, sensing that this moment wasn’t about her. It was about him laying himself bare, trusting her with something sacred.

“When I came into town,” he continued, his gaze drifting down to the street below, “I never imagined I’d meet you. I never imagined I’d… care like this. I didn’t even know a part of me could care this much. But then I saw you, Tessa. Your presence… it stood out. You didn’t ask for attention, but you had it anyway. There was something about you I couldn’t ignore.”

Tessa’s breath caught in her throat. She swallowed hard and stepped closer. “Derek…”

He didn’t look at her. He just kept walking slowly around the office, hands buried in his pockets, pacing as if trying to release the storm that raged inside him. “And then I saw your pain. Everything you were going through… it broke me to see you suffer. I didn’t know what to do with i

When he entered his own home, the silence met him like an old ghost.Jim, the housekeeper, stood near the hallway, hands folded, face uneasy. “Welcome home, sir,” he said quickly. “You’re back earlier than we expected.”Raymond’s eyes scanned the foyer. Everything looked immaculate, too immaculate. Not a shoe out of place, not a trace of life. The air smelled faintly of lemon polish and her perfume. He could feel it, that lingering presence of her, as if the house still breathed her name.“Jim,” he said, voice low.“Yes, sir?”“When was the last time Mrs. Anderson was here?”Jim’s eyes flickered. “She came two days ago, sir.”Raymond turned slowly. “Two days ago?”“Yes, sir. She packed a few things.”Raymond’s stare sharpened. “And you didn’t think to call me?”Jim swallowed. “Sir, you said not to disturb you during your trip. Your assistant said you had… several ongoing meetings and…”“That doesn’t apply to her.” Raymond’s voice cracked through the air. “It never applies to her.”Jim

Raymond looked around the boardroom with disinterest. He would be staying a few more days to seal the deal. It was a huge one that could avert the looming fold of one of his franchises. Danielle had called the shots, she knew a good number of higher ups who were willing to invest heavily in it and even though he was sick of depending on her prowess, he knew he had to do what he had to do.Three more days to go, and he could not hold it in anymore. He had met Derek earlier, and he had told him how much Tessa was hurting, and how broken she was, and it hurt him too.He had thought Derek was trying to steal his wife from him – or maybe he still was plotting something. Heck, he couldn’t trust that boy fully anymore. But there was something in his voice, the way he narrated her hurt and the way he begged him to let Tessa go if he wasn’t going to care for her.It tugged at his chest. Letting her go wasn’t and shouldn’t be an option on his table. Not because his grandmother, the only family

Tessa settled into the window seat and pressed her palm against the cold glass. The deep hum of the plane was comforting, a constant vibration that seemed to whisper that everything would be fine, that everything was finally hers to control. For the first time in a long while, she breathed. Deep, slow, unthinking breaths that filled her chest and made her feel like she might just live again. As the plane glided along the runway and lifted slowly into the air, she felt peace, so much peace. Her fingers brushed over the old leather-bound notebook in her lap, a new companion for a new life. She remembered the ease she felt when she threw her phone away that morning. Now, there will be no notifications, no messages, no accidental glimpses of him or Derek reaching for her. Nothing. She didn’t have any plans of reaching out either. All through the long flight, she pressed her forehead into the glass and let herself stare at the horizon, her thoughts scattering with the clouds. She tried to

  • When Obsession Wears a Ring   Chapter 26 - Freedom

The first thing Tessa did that morning was to discard her phone. She first broke it before throwing it far away early while on her way out of the house. The city outside was still gray with dawn when she slipped into the waiting cab. She carried one suitcase, light enough to look casual, heavy enough to contain the few belongings she took to Derek’s house. She called a cab instead of using the driver and when Nola, the housekeeper asked where she was headed and what note they would drop for Derek, she simply responded with: “I will drop him a note.” She knew she wasn’t going to but needed to leave without drama. It was a quiet forty-minute drive through the sleeping streets. The city had not yet begun its morning arguments, only the occasional horn, the faint smell of diesel, and calm city lights. The cab’s windows were tinted; her reflection looked pale, almost transparent. She hadn’t slept for two days. When the gates of Raymond’s house came into view, she asked the driver to stop j

The morning after, I felt like a bruise that refused to heal. The type of wound that left no scars but somehow shot pains all through. Pains that refuse to fade.Tessa woke to the sound of silence, a heavy, hollow type of silence that enveloped her. Now, it was not unusual for the house to be quiet, it usually was a very quiet place but for some reason, the day felt very different than usual. She shrugged it off and lay back on the bed for a while, staring at the ceiling and trying to gather the pieces of her thoughts from yesterday. For a moment, she almost believed last night was a dream. The confession. His voice. The look in his eyes before he left her standing there, raw, vulnerable, but holding himself together as though a single word could make him fall apart. It was very unusual for Derek to choose his words carefully, just like how he did last night, as though he had a lot to say but he chooses to protect her emotions. A lot of unusual things had really happened overnight. Sh
