Chapter 3

Author: Muddy
I went back to the apartment I'd shared with Avery for a year.

On paper it was the home we were going to be married out of, and the curtains were the near-black I hate most.

The floors were gray tile instead of the warm wood I'd wanted.

Even the art on the walls was that grim, shadowy style that made my chest tighten if I looked at it too long.

More than once I'd said the place felt oppressive and asked whether we could change the palette, or at least swap out some of the decor.

Avery never answered. She never even looked up.

Maybe she didn't hear me.

Or maybe she heard me perfectly and didn't care.

I didn't turn on the lights. In the dark I wrote a short resignation letter, bought a one-way ticket home, shut off my phone, and went to sleep.

At four in the morning the door banged open.

Avery came in and hit the bedroom light.

The white glare went through my eyes like a blade.

"Lucas, why would you take off without a word? Do you have any idea how worried Mason and I were?"

I squinted and rasped back, "Worried enough to come home at sunrise?"

She faltered. Her voice lost some of its edge.

"That's — that's because we were out looking for you. Mason got so upset he was crying. I had to calm him down first."

I gave her a flat smile and held up my phone. "Is this how you calm him down?"

On the screen, Avery was on Mason's back with her mouth against his ear.

The room went quiet for several seconds.

Avery cleared her throat. Something guilty went through her eyes.

"I'm short. I couldn't see over anybody. He gave me a lift for a second. You're seriously jealous of your own best friend?"

A lift. For a second.

I wanted to ask whether putting her jacket on him was a second. Whether lacing her fingers through his was a second. Whether that kiss was a second.

How many intimate things had the two of them managed in seconds?

In the end I just rolled over and closed my eyes.

"From now on, do whatever you want. Both of you."

When I woke up the next morning there was nobody beside me.

There was a mug of tea with honey on the nightstand, still warm.

I got up and found Avery busy in the kitchen.

"You're up. Come eat, I made your oatmeal."

I sat down at the table and looked at the peeled egg and the bowl steaming in front of me.

As if none of yesterday had happened.

As if she still loved me.

Avery came over smiling and took a ring out of her pocket.

"Lucas, we've been together too long for a big sappy speech."

She slid that delicate ring onto my finger, steady as anything.

Before yesterday I'd imagined this moment more times than I could count.

Now there was only an ache spreading through my chest, and my eyes went red on the spot.

Avery thought I was overwhelmed. She pulled me in and rubbed my back. "Oh, honey. Don't cry."

The year I turned twenty, my father died and my mother collapsed, and the two of them together crushed me. I didn't sleep for weeks.

Avery was the one who ran all over the city and handled everything my family couldn't.

Late at night she'd hold me exactly like this and pat my back. "Oh, honey. Don't cry. I'm here. I'm going to be here the whole time."

The memories wound around my heart like fine wire and pulled until I couldn't breathe.

Finally I couldn't stop myself. I leaned close to her ear and asked, quietly, "Avery, why did you stop loving me? What does Mason have that I don't? You loved me first..."

"Lucas, what was that? I didn't catch it."

Her phone lit up on the marble counter.

Avery let go of me fast and picked it up, and the glow caught the corner of her mouth turning up.

Less than four inches away.

I saw it clearly.

The person messaging her was saved as Mase.

He was at the top, on the gray of a pinned chat.

I was underneath, on white.

"I need to go deal with something. Eat without me."

Then she took the phone into the study without looking back.

It was a while before I could look away. I dropped my head and turned the ring on my finger.

It was a little tight.

It caught on my knuckle, and it hurt.

I tried a few times. It wouldn't come off.

I looked at my swollen finger, gave up, put my head down on the table, and cried.

Inside, Mason was on his knees in front of my mother with a fistful of her cardigan, sobbing at her."Mrs. Bennett, please. Talk to Lucas. Tell him to stop wrecking what Avery and I have."Mom had a hand pressed to her chest, her fingers shaking, pointing at him with nothing coming out.Somebody in the crowd was calling through the doorway. "Diane? Diane, are you all right?"I hit him.His head snapped to the side."Mason. We've been friends since we were kids, so I never once came after you."And what did you do? You carried on with the woman I was about to marry, and now you're here doing this to my mother. What is wrong with you?"He held his face. There wasn't a trace of guilt on him. If anything, he sounded righteous."I love Avery. I loved her the first second I saw her. What did I do wrong? Aren't you supposed to be my best friend? Why can't you just let me have her?""You shut your mouth."The voice cut through the crowd, and Avery came in fast, her jaw set hard, rig

"Lucas! I'm here. I've come to take you home."Seeing Avery again, she'd lost a lot of weight. Her coat hung off her in wrinkles, her hair was a mess, and the shadows under her eyes were deep.Like she hadn't slept properly in a long time. When I didn't react to any of it, she started talking fast."Lucas, I'm sorry. Mason was a novelty. A thrill. I got distracted, that's all."I swear to God, from the beginning until now, the only person I've loved is you."She held her hand up like she was taking an oath, absolutely sure of herself.I didn't stop what I was doing. I kept working down the shelf and said, evenly, "Avery, we can't go back. Go home. Don't waste your energy."I said it quietly, and she caught every word. She still turned her right ear toward me without thinking, terrified of missing a syllable."Please, Lucas. Forgive me this once. Just this once. How can you throw away five years like it's nothing?"I laughed a little. "Avery. You're the one who threw it away

Four hours in the air, and I landed at the airport back home.Mild and bright, not a cloud anywhere. In the cab, the driver started up a conversation in that local accent I hadn't heard in a long time."You look like you're coming back from the big city, son."I smiled. "I am.""When are you headed back out?"I looked at the streets falling away behind us and said quietly, "I'm not."I pushed the front door open, and the smell of dinner reached me before she did."Mom. I'm home."She was still at the stove, and she turned when she heard me. "Long trip. Go wash your hands, we're about to eat."I watched her moving around back there and realized that somewhere along the way her shoulders had started to curve.Something caught in my throat.Since Dad died, she'd kept this house on her own.I'd had nothing in my head but work and Avery and building a life in the city with Avery. And I'd overlooked my mother. The only family I had left. All through dinner she kept putting foo

"Lucas! Lucas, you're home—"She was across the room in three strides, and when she got the door open, the smile froze on her face.Mason was standing outside."What are you doing here?"She couldn't keep the disappointment out of it."Ave, my place has a leak. Can I hide out here for a while?"He blinked at her and didn't look away."Do whatever you want."She turned her back on him, deflated. He was barely through the door before he spotted the little ring in the entryway."Why is the ring here? Where's Lucas?"The question hit a bruise. She didn't answer. She picked up the glass in front of her and drank all of it.When nothing came back, Mason simply slid the ring onto his own finger and turned his hand this way and that, admiring it.He sat down close against her, reached up to touch her hair, and said, low and rough, "Ave. If Lucas is gone, I'll be your groom."Her whole body went stiff. "What did you say?"He thought she was overwhelmed. He leaned toward her righ

The moment Avery walked in, Mason threw himself at her and held on, all wounded."Ave, you're finally here. I was so scared just now...""It's okay. It's okay, I'm here."She rubbed his back and made low, soothing noises at him.Thunder cracked outside and the rain came down in sheets, loud against the glass.Avery couldn't quite focus. The rain was this heavy. How was Lucas doing out there? Was he getting soaked? Did he even have an umbrella? She'd left in such a hurry that she'd forgotten to ask him.The hands at her waist tightened. Mason's voice came again, lower, with something suggestive under it."Ave. Stay with me tonight?"Under that unwavering stare her heart started to pound and the tips of her ears went hot. Then a white flash lit the whole room. For a second she saw Lucas the way he'd looked getting out of the car. Thin. Alone. His back to her.Something in her chest twisted hard, and she pushed Mason away."I can't. Lucas is still out there. I have to find

It wasn't until the ticket confirmation came through that I could breathe again.I took a screenshot of the flight details, got up, and started packing.Passing the study, through the gap in the door, I saw Avery holding her phone up to her right ear with the speaker turned toward it, cupping it like something precious, terrified of missing a single word Mason said. There was a time I sent her a voice message because I was walking and couldn't type.It was the first time she ever lost her temper with me."Lucas, you know my hearing is bad. Why would you send me something I have to fight to hear? Could you think about how that feels for once?"She barely spoke to me for a week.I never sent her another one.And now she was playing Mason's, over and over."How's the ring? Did Lucas like it?""Told you. My finger's the same size as his. Nothing I put on my own hand first is going to be wrong.""So. How are you thanking me?"The teasing in his voice made her laugh, her eyes cre
