Chapter 3

Author: Lucky Dreamer
In the distance, towering flames stained the night sky blood red. Countless flashes of steel streaked upward, only to plummet just as fast.

Frantic with worry, I turned and sprinted toward the main peak.

I'd barely left the path on the back ridge when a figure in pale yellow burst out of the trees and planted herself in my way.

It was Elowen.

She was usually the neatest person I knew, but now she was covered in horrifying bloodstains, and even her hairpin had snapped in half.

"What are you doing? Go back!"

Her voice was sharp, and her eyes were filled with a panic I'd never seen in her before.

My eyes stung as I clung to her sleeve.

"Elowen, something's happened to the Order. I want to help you!"

Elowen shook off my hand and shoved a heavy storage pouch into my arms.

"Help with what? Your mortal flailing?"

She was breathing hard, and her words came out in a rush.

"The Order has already prepared a last escape route.

"If Master Aldric and the elders can hold off Solvar, the Ashwing King, great.

"If they can't, the weaker disciples have to get out through the secret tunnel immediately."

I shook my head hard, and the tears I'd been holding back finally spilled over.

"I'm not leaving! I'm not going anywhere!"

Seeing my tear-streaked face, Elowen's eyes filled with a deep sorrow.

She stepped forward and pulled me into a tight hug, her voice unusually gentle.

"Be good, Aurelia.

"Elder Hollis is in charge of the evacuation, and he owes me a huge debt from years back.

"As long as you go with him, he'll protect you with his life."

I bit down so hard on my lip that I tasted blood.

"What about you? What about Cassian? And Seraphine?"

Elowen let go of me and smoothed my messy hair.

"We're Master Aldric's apprentices. The Order raised us, and now it's time to pay it back."

She gazed at me for a long moment.

"Aurelia, I've seen how hard you've worked all these years.

"You've done amazing. Really."

She turned away, and her voice trembled with despair.

"After you leave, find some remote village and live an ordinary life.

"Solvar is a pure-blooded descendant of the ancient sun-birds of the Sunfire line.

"He's not someone you could ever stand up to."

With that, she became a streak of light and charged toward the blazing battlefield without a backward glance.

I stood frozen, clutching the storage pouch.

Without them, I'd be nothing more than a lost soul, wandering this world alone.

I tucked the pouch into my robe, gritted my teeth, and quietly followed her, keeping to the shadows of the trees.

The main square had become a living hell.

Bodies lay everywhere, and blood ran in streams.

Overhead, the legendary barrier was riddled with cracks.

Outside its glowing shield stood a man in a dark-gold robe.

He was simply standing there, yet the terrifying heat pouring off him made the very air around him twist and warp.

He casually raised his hand and drove a punch into the Grand Aetherfall Barrier.

The earth heaved, and the mountain shook.

On the high platform in the middle of the square, Seraphine sat cross-legged.

Her fingers flew as she poured aether into the ward plate, desperately trying to hold the collapsing barrier together.

Solvar gave another scornful laugh, and his second punch came crashing down.

This one carried terrifying power.

CRACK—

A sharp, shattering sound rang through the night.

Up on the platform, Seraphine's face turned white as paper, and she coughed up a shocking mouthful of blood.

Her Worldbinder Ward had been broken.

BOOM!Deafening thunder roared through the heavens.Nine colors of lightning crashed down on me relentlessly.Down below, everyone from the Aetherfall Order covered their eyes, unable to watch the horrific sight. But deep within the storm clouds, I narrowed my eyes in pure bliss."Ah, yes, right there. Hit my left shoulder a little harder."Ooh, that one on my lower back really hit the spot. So good."The nine-colored bolts left my whole body feeling loose and relaxed.Under the lightning's cleansing, my body grew purer and more flawless.A few minutes later, the commotion in the storm clouds grew weaker and weaker. The lightning seemed to have tired itself out, and it turned limp and feeble.I grabbed the last purple bolt and sucked it right into my mouth. Then I let out a satisfied burp.I'd drained the entire storm dry, and the clouds completely dissipated. The sky turned clear again. Then a giant crack split open across the heavens.Celestial music drifted down, and

Solvar completely fell apart.I'd soaked in the Sunfire he was so proud of like it was a hot spring. The divine artifact he treasured as much as his own life had burst the moment I stretched. How was he supposed to fight that? Not even bothering to pull out the bronze shards stuck in him, he turned, tore open a rift in space, and tried to flee back to the Wildspine Range."Running away?"I let out a cold laugh and vanished in an instant. Now that my body had crossed the mortal threshold, my speed had broken free of the limits of space itself.Solvar had barely set one foot into the rift when I appeared behind him.I grabbed one of the golden wings on his back and heaved with both arms.RIIIP—Amid a shower of golden demon blood, I tore one of his wings clean off."Aaargh!"His face twisted in agony, and he plunged headfirst from the sky, slamming into the square.I dropped from above and planted one foot on his chest. The tremendous impact made the whole main peak sink an

It was pitch-black inside the cauldron.Thick, blood-red mist surged in from every direction, intensely corrosive.I could hear Solvar's arrogant laughter outside."Hahahaha! Once you're inside my Devouring Crucible, even an immortal come down from the heavens wouldn't make it out in one piece!"Within a quarter of an hour, that useless girl will be nothing but a puddle of blood!"Outside, Cassian pounded the ground in despair until his knuckles were torn down to the bone.Dragging his broken bonded sword, he limped toward the Crucible and hacked at it like a madman.Sparks flew everywhere, but the bronze cauldron didn't have a single scratch.Ignoring the backlash, Seraphine coughed up her own lifeblood again and tried to carve an explosive ward onto the outside of the cauldron.Elowen hurled every pill in her storage pouch at the lid, hoping to blast open even the tiniest gap.Even Aldric crawled out of the rubble, tears streaming down his old face as he wove a spell with h

With the sun-bird revealed, the very sky changed color. The air around us was sucked dry in an instant, and the temperature soared at a terrifying rate. The flagstones of the main square began to melt into bubbling pools of lava. The elite demon soldiers who hadn't fled in time were roasted to ash before they could even scream. This was the true might of an ancient, pure-blooded great demon.Sunfire, which burned all things.Cassian closed his eyes in despair.Seraphine and Elowen bit down hard on their lips, their eyes dull and hopeless. In the ruins, Aldric struggled to lift a blood-soaked hand, his voice hoarse."It's over...
