Chapter 5 The One He Wanted to Lock Away

Author: Bright Lights
I waited for ages after sending him the link to the iron chain, but Cassian never replied.

Instead, a message popped up in our work chat.

"Ms. Rhodes, are you allergic to metal?"

Before I could overthink it, another text arrived.

"Don't misunderstand. The company's anniversary banquet is coming up, and we're planning to give every employee a gold bracelet as a gift. I'm just checking in case anyone has metal allergies."

'He's so thoughtful. If only that thoughtfulness were reserved for me alone...' I thought dismally.

I swallowed my rising bitterness as I replied as professionally as ever, "No, Mr. Knox. I don't have any metal allergies."

I got no response after that, nor did my alt account receive another message for that matter.

My thoughts fell into complete disarray, but I eventually fell asleep.

The next morning, Cassian suddenly started behaving very strangely after I got to work. Instead of diving into business, he took me sightseeing all over the city. After every stop, he would turn to me and ask the same question, "Did you enjoy it?"

I would nod each time, perplexed but pleased to be with him.

Cassian smiled. "I'm glad. Sceneries like these aren't exactly a dime a dozen."

As I looked into his gentle eyes, my heart couldn't stop aching.

'Is he scouting out date locations for when he's gotten the girl? If so, why drag me around as his practice partner?'

As a result, I found myself becoming increasingly unwilling to let Cassian end up with the person he loved after experiencing a loving warmth from him that wasn't mine to begin with.

Still, I was also self-aware enough to know that I wouldn't be able to stay by his side the second I confessed my feelings to him.

'Forget it. Staying beside him is more important than making him mine.'

So, I forced down every emotion and said calmly, "Mr. Knox, it's the end of the workday. I'll clock off and head home if there's nothing else you need."

I didn't even bother waiting for his response as I turned and fled, failing to notice the determined look in Cassian's eyes as he watched me leave.

I assumed I would spend the whole night tossing and turning. Instead, I slept far more deeply than I had in ages. Regardless, I noticed something was amiss immediately after I came to.

To be fair, it was hard not to when I could feel the unmistakable coolness of metal wrapping itself around my ankle.

I lowered my head, and my eyes widened in shock at the sight that greeted me.

The very iron chain I'd enthusiastically recommended to Cassian earlier was now securely locked around my ankle. It wasn't too tight or too loose. It was a perfect fit. The size had obviously been adjusted specifically for me.

I jerked my head up and started scanning my surroundings.

The furnishings before me were very familiar, and so was the decor…

I was in Cassian's villa! The same one I'd been spying on countless times through the security cameras I'd installed!

My brain bluescreened for a full three seconds at that realization. 'Wait. What? This isn't how the script was supposed to go. Why am I the one being imprisoned?'

Just as I sat there in utter disbelief, my burner account that had been silent all night finally received a new message from Cassian.

"Your chains work very well. Still, I'm sorry. I can't be your puppy. I only like my secretary.'"

'What?' I became even more stupefied.

I hastily tried to piece the pieces back together. Judging by the looks of things, I was Cassian's crush, and it was clear that he had no idea that the burner account that had been constantly confessing to him… also belonged to me.

The next second, the bedroom door slowly swung open. Cassian walked in, his figure was shadowed due to the light behind him. Yet, I could feel his gaze fixed unwaveringly on me.

"Does the chain fit?" he asked softly. "I had the size adjusted specifically to match your ankle, baby."

The corners of my mouth nearly shot up to my ears, but only for a split second. After all, I knew exactly what role I needed to play to make him mine.

And so, I suppressed every trace of delight in my eyes as I donned a frightened baby deer expression, trembling slightly for added effect. My voice quivered as I looked up at him. "M-Mr. Knox… w-what do you want from me?"

Yet, all he had ever received in return were the ever-rising expectations and relentless criticisms from his father. His mother had been absent for as long as he knew her, while his father had been cold and unforgiving.Years of emotional neglect and constant pressure had gradually twisted something inside him. He was more rational and clearheaded than almost anyone else, but he also craved love more desperately than anyone. After he came of age, he had voluntarily sought out a psychologist and confessed the problems he recognized within himself. After the doctor listened to his story, he had gently suggested, "Try placing your emotional attachment in the family you've built or will build for yourself in the future. Perhaps that will gradually heal the emptiness inside you."A family of his own? At the time, Cassian had found the idea both absurd and laughable. After all, no one understood his nature be

Cassian went from utter shock to slowly closing his eyes, surrendering himself to the kiss.Only when we had both run out of breath did I tilt my head away and finally let him go.His chest rose and fell heavily. His eyes had grown misty because of the kiss. However, he never looked away from me. "Are you… taking pity on me?" he asked, his voice hoarse. It seemed that he no longer believed he deserved anyone's love after being publicly rejected by his father. To him, every bit of affection that came his way now felt like charity. My heart softened as I looked at the loneliness and vulnerability on his face."No."It was only one word, yet it carried unwavering certainty.Cassian nodded, but it was obvious he didn't believe me. Instead, he apologized. "What I did… locking you up… was wrong. I hurt you. I'm sorry. You can leave now. For good if that's what you want. If you want to resign because of this, I'll give you four times the statutory severance package, plus a fully paid

I slapped him across the face.It wasn't hard. Honestly, it was more teasing than anything, but it seemed to snap Cassian back to his senses. The tenderness in his eyes vanished, replaced by panic and guilt. He immediately stepped away, putting some distance between us as he apologized earnestly, "I'm sorry, Heather. I lost control."Then, he avoided my eyes, stood up, and practically fled in total embarrassment.I stared at the tightly shut door, and all I felt was regret.'Damn it, I overdid it!'I'd only wanted to play hard to get and watch him lose control. Alas, I'd scared him away instead. Oh, how I wished I could turn back time and take that slap back.I had assumed that, with how obsessed Cassian was with me, he'd spend one awkward night sorting out his emotions before coming to see me again the next day. I never imagined he'd disappear for an entire night and the entire day after that.I didn't catch a single glimpse of him for a full 24 hours. The only person who cam

Cassian smiled now that I had finally made a request from him, a flicker of light flashing across his eyes. "You're finally asking me for something."Then, he frowned slightly, sounding a little dissatisfied. "You can take a bath, but you'll have to call me something else."I feigned awkwardness as I spoke the name I'd already whispered to myself countless times. "Cassian…"His eyes lit up with joy the instant his name fell from my lips. "Good girl."Then, he reached down and unlocked the chain around my ankle. The cold metal slipped away, and I was finally free. His fingertips gently brushed over the faint red marks the shackles had left on my skin. "You can bathe, but don't even think about running away. I'm not letting you go."I nodded obediently and meekly.'Run away? I came here with no intention of leaving!'I wandered into the bathroom and deliberately took my time.…Once I figured enough time had passed, I turned off the shower and casually wrapped a towel loosely a

Fortunately for him, I had no intention of leaving.Instead, I settled comfortably onto the bed and began taking a proper look around the room that had become my prison. In the past, it had never occurred to me that I might be Cassian's crush. I'd watched every corner of this villa through the security cameras countless times, but nothing had ever stood out to me. Now that I looked closely, it suddenly became obvious that this had been going on for quite a while. After all, everything in this room had been designed according to my tastes. The walls were painted my favorite light beige. The curtains were the luxury sheer drapes that had been sitting in my online wishlist forever. Even the bedding he'd used for this room was the soft cotton fabric I'd favored for years. The diffuser on the nightstand was the same niche fragrance I'd casually mentioned on social media once, saying it smelled wonderful.Every single detail matched my preferences to a T.A surge of warm satisfactio

Soft morning light settled across Cassian's shoulders, making his already striking features even more breathtaking. Yet, there was no hiding the unmistakable possessiveness in his eyes behind all the beauty. The look he was giving me was so intense that it felt almost predatory. Before I could continue giving him my Oscar-worthy attempt at being terrified, he had already walked over to me. Then, he bent down and gently drew me into his arms. His warm breath brushed over my hair as he slowly stroked my back, soothing me patiently. "Don't be afraid, baby. I won't hurt you."I greedily breathed in his scent, but deliberately tensed my shoulders, feigning fear."I've liked you for a long time." His chin rested lightly against the top of my head, his voice practically dripping with tenderness. "I fell for you ever since the first time you held one of my finance magazines and told me with utmost sincerity that I was your role model."I watched you stay cold and distant with everyone el
