Chapter 12

Author: Deerstream
The dinner gathering was small, with about eight people—all school administrators. Talia was delayed and arrived last at the dinner because a student had gotten injured.

When the server opened the private dining room door, everyone's gaze fell on Talia. As she looked around, she caught sight of Christian and Lionel.

Jesse hadn't mentioned that it was an appreciation dinner for the donation, and she hadn't asked for details, so she had agreed to come. Moreover, Christian usually ate at five-star restaurants and stayed at luxury hotels. She really hadn't expected him to be willing to stay and have dinner in this small town.

Christian also saw Talia. He was somewhat surprised, but then thought that, in order to meet him at dinner, she might have also made a donation like him.

Seeing Talia hesitate, Jesse quickly stood to greet her. "Dr. Stewart, come. Come sit down."

Doctor? Christian was even more surprised to hear this address.

But when he saw Talia enter the private room, he inst

Yvonne stayed in the ward for observation for an hour. Seeing no other symptoms, Talia took her back to Jubilee Manor.Once they got back, Talia helped Yvonne wash up and changed her into fresh pajamas.Only after Yvonne had fallen asleep did Talia finally go to shower and do her skincare routine.Worried about Yvonne, she decided to sleep on the couch in Yvonne's room.Maybe because she had gotten caught in the rain earlier, Talia kept dreaming. She dreamed of all the sacrifices she had made for Christian, of her falling out with her family, and even of Yvonne calling her a bad mom.In a drowsy haze, she seemed to see Christian leaning over her. His mouth was moving as if he were speaking, but she couldn't hear a single thing.A second later, she saw him bend down. One of his hands slipped under her back, and the other under her legs.He carried her up, but Talia had no idea where he was taking her.It felt like a dream, yet somehow real. That night, Talia slept deeply. When Talia returned to the hospital with the soup, Yvonne was scrolling through videos on Emma's phone. Whatever she was watching made her smile.Emma saw Talia walk in and said gently, "Ms. Yvonne, Mrs. Lane is back."Yvonne quickly turned off the screen and sat up in bed. "Mommy."Talia's pajamas were completely soaked through, but she'd been careful to protect the soup container, afraid it might spill or get cold. She handed it to Emma. "Emma, can you feed Yvonne?"Seeing Talia drenched from head to toe, Emma felt a pang of ache in her chest. When she spoke again, her voice came out hoarse. "Mrs. Lane, you should go change your clothes."Talia hummed in acknowledgment without saying anything else.Yvonne noticed her mother's wet clothes. Part of her wanted to ask her if she was okay, but then she remembered what had happened this afternoon at school—Talia hadn't come to pick her up. Thus, she decided against it.There were spare clothes in the car. So, Talia headed back outsi

Yvonne wasn't doing well. Her face had gone pale, so Talia decided to keep her in the emergency room for a while until she felt better. She got prescriptions for digestive medicine and probiotics. Emma brought a glass of water, and Talia helped Yvonne take the medication. After taking the medicine, Yvonne was unable to fall back asleep. She leaned against the bed's headboard, looking at Talia weakly. "Mommy, I'm hungry."Of course she was hungry. She'd thrown up everything in her stomach, after all.Talia's heart ached. She brushed her hand across Yvonne's forehead. "What do you want to eat? I'll go get it for you.""I want some chicken soup," Yvonne said softly.Talia smiled gently. "Okay."She told Emma to stay with Yvonne, grabbed the umbrella, and left the hospital. Talia had been rushing around so frantically that it wasn't until she stepped outside that she realized she was still in her pajamas, her hair a complete mess. She looked like a disaster. She'd gone about half a

That night at the Stewart residence, after Talia brought Maeve home, the latter rushed to the kitchen to reheat the pancake she'd made that morning. She carried it out and hovered nearby, watching Talia take her first bite. The flavor wasn't actually that good, but Talia still finished it. She kept praising Maeve, saying that she'd done well, while gently pointing out what could be improved. Maeve nodded eagerly, already planning improvements. After they finished dinner, they sat and chatted for a while. When Talia went upstairs to wash up, she picked up her phone and discovered more than ten missed calls, all from Christian. Before she could process this, Christian's call came through again. Her instinct told her that he must have something urgent, so she answered the phone without hesitation. As soon as she picked up, Christian's voice came through, dark and agitated. "Talia, what are you doing? Why aren't you answering my calls?"Christian's barrage of questions set her on edg

As Maeve talked about Talia to her teacher and friends, she stood up straighter. She held her head higher, and her eyes were full of pride.Watching Maeve like this, Talia couldn't help but smile. But at the same time, she glanced at Yvonne. Her daughter stood beside Maeve, looking overshadowed and pushed to the side. She was clutching her backpack straps with her head hanging low and her shoulders shaking. It looked like she was crying.Talia's heart instantly twisted into a knot. She wanted to call out to Yvonne, but the words that reached her lips were forcibly swallowed back down.Maeve walked out of the school and took Talia's hand of her own accord. Talia's attention shifted back to Maeve. Like magic, she produced a pink leopard plushie from behind her back and held it in front of Maeve."Here, the toy you've been dreaming about. I bought it for you."Maeve took the plushie and jumped with joy. "Thank you, Aunt Talia! You're the best!"After thanking her, Maeve had Talia c

In that moment, Talia couldn't help but recall all the times she'd taken care of Yvonne alone. Children would catch fevers easily. Unable to reach Christian, she had carried Yvonne to the hospital by herself. She had made that trip to the hospital countless times. There had been rainy days like this, too, when she'd even gotten completely soaked.Back then, how she'd longed for Christian to stand beside her and say, "Don't worry. I'm here."But he was always too busy, and she could never reach him. So gradually, she learned to handle these things on her own.But just now, in that instant, Christian had taken the umbrella that she had tucked under her neck. He said he'd hold it.Something she'd hoped for countless times was finally happening, yet all she felt was a hollow ache. If he'd been like this earlier, she wouldn't have given up so easily.Walking into the rain, Christian kept tilting the umbrella toward Talia's side. But he wasn't being kind to her. He was being kind to Yv
