Chapter 4

Penulis: Serein M
Jocelyn walked over to the mess and ground her shoe into the invisible powder.

"Rowan, you really don't know when to quit." Jocelyn looked down at me, hissing her taunts. "Still trying to lie and frame my mom at a time like this? Do you think everyone is as stupid as you?"

Lying in the pool of blood, I gave her twisted face a cold stare.

"Of course you're not stupid." I twitched my lips, spitting out bloody saliva. My voice was low and mocking. "You just refuse to see what's right in front of you."

That set Jocelyn off instantly.

She bent down, grabbed my hair, and yanked my head up.

Smack! Smack! Smack!

She slapped me three times, as hard as she could.

My father sat back on the couch, took a sip of whiskey, and stared at the wall.

"Jocelyn, sweetie, don't hit her too hard," Livia said softly. "She still has to look decent for the ceremony tomorrow."

Jocelyn dropped me back to the floor. "Lock her in the silver cellar. I'll deal with her tomorrow after the ceremony."

I was dragged down the stairs. The heavy, silver-lined door slammed shut. The bolt clicked.

Pitch black.

I knew this place. This was my childhood "time-out" room. Whenever Livia felt offended, whenever Jocelyn threw a tantrum, my father threw me in here.

No light. No sound. No pack.

Just walls coated in silver dust, constantly burning my skin and suppressing my wolf.

I leaned against the freezing silver wall. My body ached. My lips were cracked. But I didn't cry.

The next morning, the door opened. Jocelyn stood there, backlit by the light from upstairs.

"Sleep well, sister?"

I didn't answer. I was starving, bruised everywhere, and my throat felt like it was full of sand.

Seeing I couldn't stand, she grabbed my arm and dragged me up. "Get up. You're going to the ritual hall. I want you to watch me stand next to the great Alpha Kaelen and receive the witch's blessing. I want you to watch me take the glory you will never have!"

...

When we got to the hall, my father finally spoke to me.

"After the ceremony, I'm calling an Elders meeting. I'm officially naming Jocelyn as my heir." He looked at me, eyes like ice. "As for you? You're exiled. Effective immediately."

Jocelyn shoved me into a hidden viewing room on the second floor. I could see them, but thanks to a one-way glamour, they couldn't see me.

Jocelyn stood in the center of the altar. My father was on her right, Livia in the corner.

The VIPs arrived. Then, the formidable Alpha Kaelen swept in with his entourage, his sheer presence silencing the room.

Handshakes, small talk—a completely fake show.

The hour struck. The Elder announced the start of the ceremony. His voice echoed in the quiet hall.

"...And now, we welcome the arrival of the Moon Witch."

The hall was dead silent. Just the sound of the wind.

No witch appeared.

Jocelyn's face went pale. "What's going on?"

My father frowned. "What do you mean?"

Panicking, Jocelyn pulled out her phone. "I'm calling the liaison."

In the VIP seats, Alpha Kaelen checked the sky, his face blank. "Jocelyn, the ceremony time is set in stone. Where is the Moon Witch?"

Jocelyn's voice shook as the call connected. "Where is the witch? The ceremony started!"

"Miss, I'm trying to reach her! But her token is dead. She's completely unreachable."

"What do you mean unreachable? We need her right now!"

Kaelen stood up. "Is this a joke, Marcus? You brought us all here to waste our time?"

My father scrambled to apologize. "Alpha Kaelen, please wait. It's just a minor hiccup."

Jocelyn's hands were shaking so badly, the phone nearly slipped from her grasp.

The oldest Elder spoke up through the amplification spell. "Everyone, the Coven's attendant sent an ancient emergency summoning chant. I'm forwarding it to you now."

"Hurry up!"

A text pinged. Jocelyn immediately started chanting the ancient, obscure spell.

The hall was pin-drop silent. Everyone stared at Jocelyn in the center of the altar.

She stumbled through the chant... one word... then the next...

She finished the spell.

The hall remained utterly silent. Nothing happened.

A wave of disappointed murmurs swept through the crowd.

Jocelyn’s face was a mask of pure terror as she realized her failure was complete.

Marcus braced for Kaelen’s inevitable fury.

And then, a single, undeniable beam of moonlight blasted through the dome of the hall.

The light cascaded down.

It landed right on me.

A few elders rushed over to clamp a hand over Jocelyn's mouth. They looked ready to strangle her."Shut up! Please shut up!" Elder Edmund begged, shaking. "You've ruined us enough!"I raised an eyebrow. "Ruined enough? What does that mean?"Elder Edmund looked at Marcus, then gritted his teeth and spilled the truth. His voice sounded like it was bleeding. "These past few days, not only did Jocelyn not help... she stole the very last of the Moonshade herbs from the pack vault!""What?!" Gasps broke out from the crowd."She sold those rare herbs on the black market to buy diamond jewelry and a mink coat!" Elder Edmund was shaking with rage. "Now we don't even have money for severance pay! She destroyed the pack's last way out!"I looked down at Jocelyn, who was still in the dirt. Her face instantly turned ghost-white."I... I just..." she stuttered, trying to find an excuse."Just what?" I scoffed. "Just thought the pack was going down, so you grabbed whatever you could first?"Elder Ed

Over the next few days, Kaelen's revenge hit fast and hard, like a deadly hurricane. Because they couldn't hand over the promised silver mine and compensation, he completely cut off all of Silver Moon's trade routes. The usual busy caravans vanished. Winter food couldn't get in. Even basic salt and medicine were blocked. The pack completely failed to pay its warriors. Elite fighters quit and bailed. Even veteran guards packed their bags and snuck away. The Silver Moon territory became an isolated island. The pack was facing total ruin.Marcus was mobbed daily by debt collectors and furious elders."Alpha! Do something! Everyone's going to starve!""Our kids haven't had a hot meal in three days!""If we knew you'd ruin the pack like this, we'd never have backed you as Alpha!"Finally, Marcus couldn't take it anymore. He dragged a few veteran elders and stormed over to the inn where I was staying."Rowan! Get out here!" he roared from down below.I pushed the window open and looked

While Marcus was throwing his tantrum, Livia rushed out. She wiped away a fake tear, putting on her best 'misunderstood victim' act."Rowan, don't be mad at your father. He just has a quick temper, but he truly loves you." She walked over and tried to grab my hand. "The pack fed and clothed you for years. We gave you a roof over your head. Now that everyone is about to be homeless, how can you just leave us to die?"Her voice had the perfect quiver. She acted like she was the innocent victim in all this. "I know you have a kind heart. You can't bear to see your people starve and freeze..."Looking at her fake face made me sick to my stomach."Fed and clothed me?" I let out a cold laugh. I looked at them like they were already dead. "What did you ever give me?"My voice rang loud and clear through the hall, making sure everyone heard. "I ate your leftover bones and stale bread! I slept in a drafty, broken-down shed! I wore Jocelyn's trashed hand-me-downs!"Livia's face went sheet-white

Marcus's face turned livid. He took a deep breath, forced his anger down, and glared at the sobbing Jocelyn."Jocelyn!" he roared like thunder. "Apologize to your sister, right now!"Jocelyn's eyes went wide. She looked at him like he was crazy. "What? You want me to apologize to her? For what?!"She pointed at herself, voice shrill. "I am the heir! I have pure Alpha blood! What is she? Even if she's a Moon Witch, her blood is nothing compared to mine!"Marcus looked even worse. "Apologize now! Or else...""Or else what?" Jocelyn shot back, still banking on her status. "What will you do to me? I'm your precious daughter!"Marcus narrowed his eyes. His voice dropped dangerously low. "Fine, you won't apologize? Then I'm cutting off your premium venison supply!"Jocelyn's face fell instantly."And," Marcus kept pushing, "I'll kick you out of your heated suite in the main house. You can sleep in the basement storage room!""What?!" Jocelyn shrieked in horror. "Father, you can't do this to

Tears poured down Jocelyn's swollen face, ruining her perfect makeup. She looked like a clown."Father, you've gone too far!" she choked out. Her voice climbed into a whiny shriek. "You never blamed me for my mistakes before!"She started listing off her greatest hits. "I ruined the spring blessing ritual and caused three months of bad crops! And last time we expanded east, I screwed up the orders and got twenty of our best fighters killed!"She sounded more wronged by the second, her voice piercing."Didn't you say it was all Rowan's bad luck back then? Didn't you say she killed our mom and brought a curse on the pack? When you locked her in solitary, didn't you say she was a jinx?!"She pointed at me, screaming at the top of her lungs. "Why hit me today? You used her to take the fall for me for years! Now she's suddenly some Moon Witch, and you're just going to turn your back on me?!"Hearing this, my heart turned to ice. The last tiny bit of hope I had for my blood family turned to

Kaelen's voice was bone-chilling. It carried the crushing aura of a supreme Alpha. "The price for your deceit is steep. The Silver Moon Pack will surrender its core silver mine and half of its territory."He paused. Pure killing intent flashed in his golden eyes. "Otherwise, my army will flatten this place today. The Silver Moon Pack will be wiped off the map."The hall fell dead silent. VIPs gasped. Elders looked at each other in panic. The core silver mine was the pack's lifeline. Losing it meant going bankrupt.Marcus, who never gave a damn about the pack's finances, was dumbfounded. He spun around and roared at Jocelyn. "What the hell did you do?! Didn't you say everything was handled?!"But the spoiled brat wasn't scared. Jocelyn just rolled her eyes like the arrogant princess she was. "So the alliance is off. Who cares?" She flipped her hair, completely unbothered. "What's the big deal about Kaelen? He's just an Alpha! I'm an Alpha's daughter too! Why should we be afraid of him?
