Chapter 8

ผู้เขียน: Summer Forest
When I came to, I was lying in a funeral chapel. Black and white drapes hung from every wall, and a table at the front held rows of candles flanking a framed photograph of a girl. I scrambled to the door and pounded on it with both fists.

"Let me out! What are you doing to me?"

Grandma's voice came from the other side. "The ceremony is in three days. Behave yourself and don't make a scene."

Over the next three days, I tried everything. I threw myself against the door and tried to break the windows, but nothing worked.

They even took my shoes so I couldn't run. I begged, I screamed, and I cursed at them through the walls. Not a single person helped me.

On the third day, a group of men pinned me down and dragged me to the chapel at the mayor's estate.

"It's time!" the officiant called out. "Let the ceremony begin!"

They forced me to my knees. The bride waiting for me at the altar was nothing but a cold stone memorial marker. I fought as hard as I could. The veins in my temples were bulging, but I couldn't break free from the rough hands holding me down.

After the ceremony, they tied me up and locked me in a back room behind the chapel. I sat in the corner with my back against the wall, staring at the black coffin in front of me.

I didn't know if they planned to kill me and bury me beside the girl inside, or keep me locked in here for the rest of my life, married to a slab of stone. Either way, I wasn't going to accept it.

I listened to the sounds outside while I worked the rope against the sharp edge of the table behind me. It tore my wrists raw, and blood oozed out of my skin, but I gritted my teeth and kept going.

It was past midnight, and the guard on duty drank himself unconscious. He was snoring loud enough to shake the walls. I knew this was my chance.

I pulled free of the frayed rope and eased open the back window, which they hadn't fully latched. The moment I dropped to the ground, a bolt of pain shot through my ankle. I clenched my jaw, hauled myself up, and ran.

It didn't take long before the shouting started behind me. "He's gone! Get after him!"

I sprinted barefoot through dark open fields with nothing but blackness ahead of me. I couldn't even see the road.

I didn't know how much longer my body would hold out. All I knew was that I couldn't stop. If I stopped, my life was over.

I didn't know how long I ran before my vision started to blur and my legs finally gave out. I collapsed at the edge of a highway.

A pair of headlights cut through the darkness and swept over me. I raised my hand with the last scrap of strength I had.

"Please... help me."

For once in my life, fate was kind. The driver was a decent person and took me all the way back to the city.

All I wanted was to get as far away as possible from the place that had turned my life into a nightmare. However, to leave the country, I needed my passport, and it was still back at that house.

It was the middle of the night. I unlocked the front door with my fingerprint and crept toward my room.

As I passed my parents' bedroom, I heard them talking and held my breath.

"Piper seems pretty attached to Logan. If she finds out we married him off in a spirit marriage, do you think she'll cause trouble?"

That was Mom.

Dad said, "Piper likes Corey, and Corey told me he likes her too. They're perfect for each other. That's the whole reason I went along with your parents' plan.

"Logan's always been difficult. It's better to keep him locked away in the country than let him get in the way of Corey and Piper's future."

My fists clenched on their own, and my knuckles went white. Part of me had still been holding out hope on the drive back. It was a small, desperate part that wanted to believe there was an explanation for all this.

Now I knew for certain. My own parents had sold me to a dead girl so that Corey could live happily ever after.

Rage and grief churned in my chest, but I couldn't make a sound. I knew that if they caught me, they'd drag me right back without a second thought.

I swallowed it all down, slipped into my room, grabbed my passport and my bag, and walked out of the house I'd lived in for 18 years.

My flight was at 10:00 am the next day. I stood at the end of the street with no idea where to spend the night. I didn't have much saved, and a hotel felt like a waste.

I thought of Piper. Even if she didn't understand me, she wouldn't sell me off the way my family had.

I went to the Ashton residence. The lights were still on inside their place, and the garden out front was full of flowers.

I walked up to ring the bell, but through the gaps in the iron gate, I saw them. There among the flowers, Corey had his arms around Piper, and they were kissing like they never wanted to stop.

I stood there as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over my head. The last lifeline I'd been reaching for turned out to be the very thing that pulled me under.

In the end, I dragged my suitcase to the police station. They examined my injuries overnight, took my statement, and opened a case. By the time the sun came up, I was in a car headed for the airport.

As the plane lifted off, I looked out the window at the city I'd spent 18 years in. The relief of having survived and the terror of how close I'd come hit me all at once, and my throat tightened as my eyes burned.

When the plane climbed above the clouds, I took a deep breath and told myself quietly, "Goodbye, Logan Hollis. The old one, anyway."

Starting today, I was going to become someone new.

It had been a year or two since I'd last seen Piper. She'd lost a lot of weight, and the bright, confident energy she used to carry had given way to something tired and worn.I gave her a polite nod. "It's been a while."She opened the car door. "Where are you headed? I'll drive you."I was about to turn her down when a clear voice cut in from behind me. "He already has a ride. No need to trouble yourself."Scarlett slipped my bag off my shoulder, then tilted her chin toward a car parked further down the street. "Let's go. If we don't leave now, we'll miss the flight."I didn't linger. I got in the car with Scarlett, and we pulled away. In the rearview mirror, I caught one last glimpse of Piper, still standing where we'd left her, watching me go. I looked away and didn't turn around.I never saw her again after that.…The next time I heard anything about Piper, it was three years later. Heather Colson, a high school classmate, came to Astralis on a business trip and took me ou

I went back in the end. I wanted to close that chapter with my own hands.By the time I reached the hospital, Dad was in the ICU. Four years had stripped him down to almost nothing. He was skeletal under the blankets. An oxygen mask covered most of his face, and he was too weak to speak. When he saw me, his clouded eyes flickered with something like light. He tried to lift his hand, but his fingers trembled for a long time and never made it off the bed.Mom was sitting by his side. The second she saw me, the tears started. "Logan, you're finally home."She grabbed onto me and started telling me, through sobs, what had happened while I was gone. Corey had been released from the psychiatric facility and had been living at home ever since. He refused to accept what had happened and spent years trying to retake his exams, but he never got into another school.Over time, his personality grew more and more volatile, until eventually he stopped leaving the house altogether. The family

Piper came inside anyway. "Logan."She stopped in front of me. Her eyes drifted to Scarlett's hand still resting on my shoulder. Something in her expression dimmed."I'm sorry. Once again, I wasn't there for you."I wiped my eyes and met hers. "It doesn't matter."She looked taken aback, and I held her gaze evenly. "I don't need anyone by my side anymore. From now on, I'll take care of myself."The light in Piper's eyes faded, little by little. After a long silence, she asked quietly, "Are you two together?"I glanced at Scarlett. "That doesn't matter either. Piper, whether or not Scarlett and I are together, I'm never getting back with you."Her face went even paler. "Why? Logan, I know I was wrong. Why won't you give me a chance to start over?"I let out a soft laugh. "You still don't get it, do you? I already gave you plenty of chances."The first time I found out she'd kissed Corey, I waited for her explanation. However, she brushed it off like it was nothing. When my par

I was on my feet before I even realized it. "Scarlett, let's go. I don't want to eat here anymore."I barely made it two steps before Mom caught up. "Logan! Logan, is that you?"Dad and Sabrina were right behind her, cutting off every way out.Mom's eyes were bloodshot as she reached for me. "Logan, we've been looking everywhere for you."I stepped back, out of her reach. "Why?"Her hand hung in the air. Dad let out a sigh and, for once, dropped the sense of authority from his voice."We came to apologize. The way we treated you before was wrong."Sabrina kept her head down. "Logan, I know I said some awful things. I'm sorry."Looking at their gentle, contrite faces, I felt nothing but the sheer absurdity of it all. When I didn't respond, Mom jumped in. "Corey's already been punished. The things he did blew up so badly that the school expelled him. He's had a mental breakdown since then, crying and screaming all day. We had to check him into a psychiatric facility."She watch

Scarlett took me to a restaurant near campus. Once the food arrived, she said, "I'm moving out tomorrow."I blinked. "Your mom came to get you? Are you going home?""Nope." She leaned back in her chair with a serious expression."I've been thinking about what you said, and you were right. Why should my dad's money end up in some other woman's pocket?"I've decided to stay, focus on school, and take over the business. Then, I'll bring my mom here, spoil her rotten, and let that cheating bastard watch."I couldn't help but laugh. "Glad you came around."Scarlett always acted as if nothing fazed her, but I knew that staying here and facing the father who'd been absent most of her life wasn't nearly as easy as she made it sound. She narrowed her eyes at me. "I'm about to move out, and that's all you have to say?""What else should I say?""Would it kill you to tell me you'll miss me?"I looked down and kept eating. "Why would I miss you?""Cold." She stared at me for a few secon

I pried Piper's fingers off one by one. "Did you forget? You're the one who gave up on me first. You and the people I used to call family left me behind together."Piper scrambled to her feet. "Logan, I never wanted to give up on you. I just misunderstood. I didn't know they would do that to you."Her eyes were red, and her voice was getting hoarser by the second. "I've always loved you. My whole life, you're the only person I've ever loved."I cut her off. "Stop talking about love. You don't get to use that word."Whatever she called love was worth nothing."I'm going to be late." I shifted the books under my arm and walked past her."Stop following me."Piper called after me, "I'm not giving up. Logan, I'm going to prove to you that what I feel is real."I didn't bother responding. I figured if I ignored her long enough, she'd go back home.It wasn't until the next day that I found out what "not giving up" actually meant. That afternoon, I walked into the library with an ar
