Chapter 7

ผู้เขียน: Summer Forest
Piper squeezed my hand back, and for a second I saw hesitation flicker across her face. Then, Corey's voice came from behind us.

"Piper."

Her whole expression changed. Her attention locked on him instantly, and her grip on my hand loosened.

Corey flashed a bright smile. "We're heading out to see Grandma and Grandpa. Logan doesn't want to come for some reason."

Piper sighed and pushed me away. "Logan, I thought being grounded all those days might've knocked some sense into you. Why are you picking fights with your family again?"

I looked into her familiar eyes and couldn't get a single word out. That night in the pouring rain, I'd thought this girl was my lifeline.

Now I understood that she was nothing but a dream I'd been too desperate to wake up from. She was never going to lead me out of this storm.

I let go of her hand and stood there, frozen. Dad caught up, grabbed me, and shoved me into the car.

Piper didn't look at me again. She smiled and waved goodbye to Corey, telling him to have fun out in the country.

The car pulled away, and all I could do was pray silently. I wanted time to move faster, just a little faster. Once I got on that plane, all of this would be behind me for good.

A few hours later, we pulled up to the old family farmhouse. My grandparents had set up a big outdoor feast.

Half the county had turned up, and every last person was crowded around Corey. They were telling him how handsome he was, how impressive he was, and how he was destined for great things. Mom and Dad beamed with pride.

I sat in the corner like a spectator, watching their happy little family from the outside. The table was loaded with food, but I couldn't taste any of it. I picked at a few bites and eventually drifted back inside to lie down on the couch in the living room, and nobody cared.

I didn't know how much time had passed when the noise outside finally died down, and the sky turned dark. I heard a car engine start. I walked outside and saw that Mom and Dad had already left with Sabrina and Corey.

A sick feeling crawled up the back of my neck.

"Dad! Mom!" I ran after them, but I barely made it to the front gate before my grandparents stepped in to block my path.

"Where do you think you're going?"

My heart was hammering. "Why did Mom and Dad leave? Why didn't they take me?"

Grandpa scoffed. "Take you? You're old enough to start pulling your weight for this family."

A chill sank through me. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Grandma smiled, and the look on her face made my skin crawl. "The mayor's daughter passed away a few years back, and the family's been looking for the right person to take part in a spirit marriage.

"Your birth chart is a match, and they're willing to pay handsomely."

She named a figure, and her cloudy eyes gleamed. "Your brother's going to art school. That's expensive. It's time you did your part for the family."

I thought I'd heard her wrong. "A spirit marriage? You want me to marry a dead girl?

"I already got into college. My life is just starting."

Grandpa's face hardened. "Your grades are nothing special. What's the point of all that schooling?

"The mayor only had the one daughter. You marry into that family, carry on their name, and they'll take good care of you."

I stumbled back, and my whole body went cold. These people were my own flesh and blood, and they were plotting to sell me off to a corpse.

I spun around to run, but the second I took a step, my legs buckled. I tried to scream, but nothing came out.

My arms and legs went numb, one by one, and the next thing I knew, everything went black, and I hit the ground.

It had been a year or two since I'd last seen Piper. She'd lost a lot of weight, and the bright, confident energy she used to carry had given way to something tired and worn.I gave her a polite nod. "It's been a while."She opened the car door. "Where are you headed? I'll drive you."I was about to turn her down when a clear voice cut in from behind me. "He already has a ride. No need to trouble yourself."Scarlett slipped my bag off my shoulder, then tilted her chin toward a car parked further down the street. "Let's go. If we don't leave now, we'll miss the flight."I didn't linger. I got in the car with Scarlett, and we pulled away. In the rearview mirror, I caught one last glimpse of Piper, still standing where we'd left her, watching me go. I looked away and didn't turn around.I never saw her again after that.…The next time I heard anything about Piper, it was three years later. Heather Colson, a high school classmate, came to Astralis on a business trip and took me ou

I went back in the end. I wanted to close that chapter with my own hands.By the time I reached the hospital, Dad was in the ICU. Four years had stripped him down to almost nothing. He was skeletal under the blankets. An oxygen mask covered most of his face, and he was too weak to speak. When he saw me, his clouded eyes flickered with something like light. He tried to lift his hand, but his fingers trembled for a long time and never made it off the bed.Mom was sitting by his side. The second she saw me, the tears started. "Logan, you're finally home."She grabbed onto me and started telling me, through sobs, what had happened while I was gone. Corey had been released from the psychiatric facility and had been living at home ever since. He refused to accept what had happened and spent years trying to retake his exams, but he never got into another school.Over time, his personality grew more and more volatile, until eventually he stopped leaving the house altogether. The family

Piper came inside anyway. "Logan."She stopped in front of me. Her eyes drifted to Scarlett's hand still resting on my shoulder. Something in her expression dimmed."I'm sorry. Once again, I wasn't there for you."I wiped my eyes and met hers. "It doesn't matter."She looked taken aback, and I held her gaze evenly. "I don't need anyone by my side anymore. From now on, I'll take care of myself."The light in Piper's eyes faded, little by little. After a long silence, she asked quietly, "Are you two together?"I glanced at Scarlett. "That doesn't matter either. Piper, whether or not Scarlett and I are together, I'm never getting back with you."Her face went even paler. "Why? Logan, I know I was wrong. Why won't you give me a chance to start over?"I let out a soft laugh. "You still don't get it, do you? I already gave you plenty of chances."The first time I found out she'd kissed Corey, I waited for her explanation. However, she brushed it off like it was nothing. When my par

I was on my feet before I even realized it. "Scarlett, let's go. I don't want to eat here anymore."I barely made it two steps before Mom caught up. "Logan! Logan, is that you?"Dad and Sabrina were right behind her, cutting off every way out.Mom's eyes were bloodshot as she reached for me. "Logan, we've been looking everywhere for you."I stepped back, out of her reach. "Why?"Her hand hung in the air. Dad let out a sigh and, for once, dropped the sense of authority from his voice."We came to apologize. The way we treated you before was wrong."Sabrina kept her head down. "Logan, I know I said some awful things. I'm sorry."Looking at their gentle, contrite faces, I felt nothing but the sheer absurdity of it all. When I didn't respond, Mom jumped in. "Corey's already been punished. The things he did blew up so badly that the school expelled him. He's had a mental breakdown since then, crying and screaming all day. We had to check him into a psychiatric facility."She watch

Scarlett took me to a restaurant near campus. Once the food arrived, she said, "I'm moving out tomorrow."I blinked. "Your mom came to get you? Are you going home?""Nope." She leaned back in her chair with a serious expression."I've been thinking about what you said, and you were right. Why should my dad's money end up in some other woman's pocket?"I've decided to stay, focus on school, and take over the business. Then, I'll bring my mom here, spoil her rotten, and let that cheating bastard watch."I couldn't help but laugh. "Glad you came around."Scarlett always acted as if nothing fazed her, but I knew that staying here and facing the father who'd been absent most of her life wasn't nearly as easy as she made it sound. She narrowed her eyes at me. "I'm about to move out, and that's all you have to say?""What else should I say?""Would it kill you to tell me you'll miss me?"I looked down and kept eating. "Why would I miss you?""Cold." She stared at me for a few secon

I pried Piper's fingers off one by one. "Did you forget? You're the one who gave up on me first. You and the people I used to call family left me behind together."Piper scrambled to her feet. "Logan, I never wanted to give up on you. I just misunderstood. I didn't know they would do that to you."Her eyes were red, and her voice was getting hoarser by the second. "I've always loved you. My whole life, you're the only person I've ever loved."I cut her off. "Stop talking about love. You don't get to use that word."Whatever she called love was worth nothing."I'm going to be late." I shifted the books under my arm and walked past her."Stop following me."Piper called after me, "I'm not giving up. Logan, I'm going to prove to you that what I feel is real."I didn't bother responding. I figured if I ignored her long enough, she'd go back home.It wasn't until the next day that I found out what "not giving up" actually meant. That afternoon, I walked into the library with an ar
