Chapter 1

Autor: Queenie
The night's whispers of love had finally fallen silent when Trevin Hoffman, wearing a ragged bathrobe, stumbled out of the bedroom.

He was unsteady on his feet, his cheeks flushed with a satisfied glow, his eyes lingering on the memory of what had just passed. The love bites marking his skin stood out starkly.

Ignoring me completely, he poured himself a glass of water at the dining table and spoke with a hint of annoyance.

"Yara, there's a limit to how much of a scene you can make. I'm not feeling great, and I don't have the patience for your attitude right now.

"It was just one night. Wren, a girl, didn't make a fuss about it. Can't you relax a little?"

"Relax?" I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. "She’s really something—jumping into bed with a guy who’s about to get married!"

In a fit of rage, Trevin hurled his glass to the floor. "Shut up!

"Wren's not doing well. Don't talk trash in front of her, or you can kiss this marriage goodbye!"

No sooner had he spoken than the medical team we had on standby rushed into the bedroom to begin life-saving measures.

Trevin was right there with them, not even giving me a second look.

Wren Scott was lying on what was supposed to be my wedding bed, weakly holding Trevin's hand.

"Trevin, I've been a burden to you, but I just wanted to see you one last time before I go…"

The air was thick with hormones, and the trash can was overflowing with evidence of their night together.

"Being with you before I die makes me so happy… On the wedding day, can I just watch from the sidelines?"

"Don't be silly!" Trevin clutched Wren's hand, tears filling his eyes, and he shouted at the doctor. "Save her, now!"

He turned back to her. "Wren, you're going to be okay. I'm still looking forward to the day I can lift your veil."

They kissed with abandon, like lovers seizing their final moments before the apocalypse.

I watched the soap opera scene play out in front of me, my stomach churning.

Everyone in town knew Trevin was my Achilles' heel.

For him, I, the pampered heiress who never lifted a finger, awkwardly took up cooking, bending over backward to please him.

I even endured the punishment from my furious granddad, all to be his bride.

I poured my heart out to Trevin, never expecting to be repaid with betrayal.

"Yara, are you blind? You're just standing there like a statue," Trevin snapped, his eyes brimming with annoyance.

"Why haven't you called the Lawrence family medics yet? If Wren dies because of the delay, will you be able to live with that?"

When I did not budge, Trevin's expression turned stormy. It was the first time I had ever openly defied him in front of others.

"Our wedding's tomorrow, and you choose now to pick a fight?"

"Do you even remember we're getting married?" I fixed my gaze on the telltale hickey on his neck and let out a scornful laugh. "Did the wedding slip your mind while you were in bed with Wren?"

"I was saving her life!"

I laughed calmly. "Sure, save her life!

"You had an antidote but chose the hero's path instead. How selfless!"

His face went from pale to flushed as he was about to retort, but the wedding planners barged in, chattering away.

Trevin's best man led the pack, catching sight of the chaos in the bridal suite and knitting his brows in disapproval.

"All her savings went to hospital bills, and I'm slaving away at three jobs a day to keep her afloat. However, since she's been paralyzed, she's not just picky, she's turned violent towards me!"Yara, please help me! I realize my mistakes now, I swear I'll never be recklessly kind again!"Recklessly kind? The nerve of him to even say that.I gave him a once-over, my gaze dripping with sarcasm."That wasn't recklessness, that was you tripping over yourself to play the hero for your precious Wren. I don't have time for your sob story. If you've got any sense, you'll disappear from my sight, or you'll have me to answer to!"However, Trevin just stared back at me, defiance in his eyes."No, my dear wife, you still love me! If not, you wouldn't have handed me over to Wren so easily. You wanted me to be happy, and now, you're the only one who can make that happen!"His words made my stomach turn, so I laid it out plain and simple."You're delusional! I've been counting the days sinc

"What do I take you for? You're nothing but a love-struck fool! How did the campus star you once were end up like this?"Edward gave an exasperated eye roll, his last few words lost in a quiet mumble.Confused by my look, Edward's ears turned a bright red as he shoved past me and bolted up the stairs."It's getting late. Time to wash up and hit the hay."The new house was a last-minute find, and while it was not exactly bursting with cheer, it had everything we needed.Without saying a word, Edward and I chose to bunk in separate rooms, and both of us slept like logs.Post-wedding, I was homebound, juggling work and healing up.Edward was all business, clocking in at the company from nine to five, wheeling and dealing, and breaking new ground. After our families joined forces and got the first project off the ground, we could finally kick back and relax. We were just tossing around honeymoon ideas when Alfred and Becky showed up on our doorstep, desperate for help. This time,

Alfred glared at him with revulsion."What's the point of inheritance for an adopted kid? My son is about to come back from abroad in a few months, and he'll be my rightful heir when the time comes. Now apologize to Ms. Lawrence, and don't drag your brother into this mess!" Trevin looked at his parents, and after a long moment, he steeled himself and approached me. "Yara, I realize my mistake. Please, just forgive me for this once."The sleazy words hung in the air, making my skin crawl. Trevin, with a calculated casualness, had popped open two buttons of his shirt, his eyes crawling over me like unwelcome insects."Ugh, disgusting!"Before Edward could even react, my frosty retort stopped Trevin dead in his tracks. No one expected me to recoil with such loathing at the man who once showered me with affection."Keep your little love tokens with Wren to yourself. I'm married, and I'm not in the market for a side piece."I brushed off Trevin's panicked look, my words sharp and s

Just as he was about to reach Edward, I acted fast, shoving him to the floor and saying from above."Get him out of here, now."Trevin was hauled off by security, his eyes burning with rage as he yelled back at me."Yara, all I did was give up my first night to save Wren, and this is how you repay me? Let me tell you, once I walk out that door, no matter how much you beg, I'm not coming back!"The crowd buzzed with shock, and even Edward stared at Trevin, saying in disbelief, "Is he for real? We're on live TV here!"I watched Trevin's figure disappear into the distance and remarked dryly."Who knows?"We locked eyes, took a deep breath, and plastered our smiles back on.The emcee stepped up just in time to defuse the tension, and the wedding went on without a hitch. After soothing both our families, Edward and I had just settled into the bridal suite for a moment of peace when an unexpected visitor showed up.Alfred and Becky burst in, dragging Trevin with them, and blurted o

The remote clattered to the floor as Trevin gaped at the wedding broadcast, shock plastered across his face. That could not be happening. How on earth was Edward, the lowlife who had been dumped, the groom? In a panic, Trevin snatched up his phone, but try as he might, Yara's line was unreachable. He sped to the wedding, only to be barred at the gates."Move it! I'm the groom, why can't I get in?" Trevin bellowed at the security guards."Sir, the Lawrence family's wedding isn't a circus for just anyone to come and stir up trouble!""Me, stir up trouble? I'm supposed to be the groom today! Let me get in there to set things straight!"He turned to scream inside, "Yara, get out here! Fire these arrogant guards!"The guards' smug dismissal sent Trevin over the edge, and he made a spectacle of himself at the entrance, dignity be damned.Just then, Trevin's parents, Alfred Hoffman and Becky York, arrived in a rush and pulled him aside. In a secluded corner, anger seared across Tre

I checked the time on my dashboard; the hospital was just ten minutes away."Relax, I'm flying solo from here on out. See you at the wedding tomorrow."I ended the call, feeling a weight lift off my chest. However, as I was about to make a turn, a car I knew all too well rammed into me from behind. The crash sent my car tumbling, pain exploding in my legs, the world turning a bloody hue.Through the cracked window, I saw Trevin walking up, his eyes seething with bitterness."Yara, you've brought this on yourself. Wren can't be hurt!"Ignoring my desperate state, he snatched my phone.I tried to stop him, but I could not even muster the strength to get out of the wreck."Stop!""Stop?" Trevin sneered, playing with my phone as if I were nothing."Yara, to think you'd leave someone to die! I'm just locking in some good luck for you!"I stared him down, teeth clenched in anger. "That's the serum my granddad's been waiting on for five years!"Trevin gave me a dismissive look. "
