Damon’s POV

She said no. Again.

No to the animal festival.

No to bonding time.

No to every calculated, careful effort I’d made.

And the worst part?

I don’t even blame her.

She gave up her dream. Her life. Her youthful days to raise a child who isn't hers. She grieved her sister while raising her son and she doesn't blame Eva or Leo.

Instead she puts in her all into raising Leo right and he is such a sweet child. Ava fights tooth and nail to give Leo what he needs and more and that only makes her stronger.

Ava Hayes doesn’t bend. She doesn’t soften with gifts or strategy. She doesn’t crack when you press her. She bites back—smart, fast, and with eyes that could cut steel.

I'm not used to people, especially women talking back at me. Hell, people don't dare look me in the eye.

Women see me as a god and men, they see me as superior. But Ava? She looks at me like I'm someone beneath her… and not just that but one she despises.

I’ve negotiated with CEOs twice her age and five times her ego

  • When Vows Break    Chapter 11

Damon's POV A tired sigh leaves my lips as my fingers move quickly to sign some contracts I have gone through a million times.I'm on my merry way back from Spain where I just concluded a large business meeting that lasted a couple of days. As much as I love traveling on my plane, it never gets any better. The whole place is empty save for two hostesses and my pilot and the silence in here is deafening.I'm up and moving as soon as the flying monster touches the ground and my plans remain simple; rest a bit, get updated and have a little bit of fun with Ava.But of course my friends will always think of changing my plans… What are friends for? Right?“Hey buddy, have your feet touched the pad yet?” Robert's voice booms with anticipation immediately I answer his call.“Nope, I'm just leaving Spain.” I say through my teeth. Yeah I'm a bad liar.“That doesn't seem to be a problem, if you're just leaving Spain you should be here before nightfall.” I don't need to be a wizard to know tha

Ava's POV I sway my hips left and right to the rhythm of the song blasting from my speakers.I'm in a bath robe, a curler in hand as I prepare for the big night. Yup I decided to curl my waist length hair cause I don't need it to be too close to the hem of my dress. It's already short as it is walking around with hair that long will only make it seem shorter.Maya will be here within an hour and my club lovers might ask how I took my bath and chose my dress within forty minutes and my answer? It was easier since I just decided to wear my all time favorite. Duh!!I move to my dresser and settle for a smoky look tonight. I would've loved the bad girl look but I'm not looking to attract any more trouble tonight. I mean, if you didn't know I'll tell you; men are trouble.A honk snaps me out of my crazy monologue and I go to open my door knowing who it is.“Can you please not render me deaf” “Where is your dress? Don't tell me you are not done yet.” An inpatient Maya rants, storming into

Ava's POV “Mummy, I miss Uncle.” I pause, shocked.Leo is on my lap while I peel him an apple. Dicing it into tiny bits so it can fit into his tiny mouth.“Uncle? What uncle are you missing Leo?” Confusion laces my tone.“The man that took me to aunty Maya's office, he said he is my Uncle. And I miss him.”Since I heard the description of the man who brought in my son from the police, I've been suspecting Damon. But with what Leo just said, I'm having doubts.“He told you that?” He nods, a piece of apple between his teeth. “And did he take you anywhere apart from Aunt Maya's office?”“He took me to a restaurant and I ate a tasty sandwich and he bought a dinosaur pencil case for me. It's in my bag.”I keep that in mind to ask Maya and force a smile.“Did you have fun baby?” “I did. Uncle wanted to go to the park but I was not comfort..ta..mmm…ble.” He completes the last word with a smile.Without realizing it, I'm already smiling by the time he is done and I give him a high five.“Th

Ava's POV “Hello?” I speak into the phone.“Ava, I'm so sorry, I just looked away from Leo for a second and when I looked back, he was gone.”My heart drops.“What do you mean Gabby?” My voice shakes.“I can't find Leo in the school building.” She's sobbing. My body shakes as a sob leaves my lips. But I have to calm down and find him as soon as possible. “Take a deep breath girl” It's ironic cause I'm the one who needs that reassurance. “I need you to look around the school area. Streets, parks, restaurants, anywhere a child can be. I'll look around here and call Maya.”“Alright I'll do just that.” She says already shuffling around.Ending the call, I don't even think to take permission from the Manager knowing fully well I might lose my only source of income. But right now, I'm more concerned about my baby's safety. With shaky hands and shuddering breath, I throw my apron on the floor and run out of the diner. My heart moves to my mouth as I call Maya.“Hey babe, is Leo back from s

  • When Vows Break    Chapter 6

Ava’s POV The book is still on my book shelf. It's been a week since he sent it. I don’t toss it, not because I’m sentimental, but because I’m suspicious. The Little Prince? Seriously? A poetic, heartstring-tugging story wrapped in a handwritten note? Damon Ashford doesn’t strike me as a man who reads French fairy tales before bed. He’s playing a long game. The kind where you don’t realize the board is tilted until you’ve already lost the first few pieces. But I’m not a pawn. Trust me when I say I'm the best when it comes to games like this. And I don’t care how good the cover looks, I’m watching the hands that sent it. — “Bye Mama.” Leo waves, going into his class and I wave back. Getting on the bus, I make my way to the diner. A ping from my phone cut through my thoughts. I sigh pulling out my phone. Maureen's text. Again. > “What's up girl?... He wants to invite Leo to a kids’ animal festival. Music, bubbles, baby goats. Says it’ll be fun.” I stare at the s
