Chapter 2

Author: Zee
With that, I had no choice but to feign resignation and nod.

Right then, her phone's ringtone cut through the silence.

She flipped her phone over in a flash, but not before I caught a glimpse of the bold letters on the screen.

[Max Hubby]

Jane clutched her phone, her lips a tight line, her voice tinged with anxiety.

"Honey, something urgent came up at work. You go ahead and sleep, okay?"

With those words, she dashed to the home office, making sure to lock the door behind her.

I casually tapped into the office's security feed.

She must have forgotten that for safety's sake, we have got cameras in every room.

The screen lit up to a scene that was hard to stomach.

Jane, who promised to wait until her wedding night, was then slipping off her sole piece of sleepwear.

Without a second thought, she was video flirting with her so-called guy bestie.

Her smug voice came through loud and clear.

"Don't sweat it. The wedding dress thing is all set. I knew Seth, the yes-man, would cave!

"What if his mom made it before she died? It's hideous and outdated! Your revamped mini-skirt version is way more my style!

"Seriously, if it wasn't for his trust-fund kid status, who'd stick with Mr. Stick-in-the-Mud? Imagine his face at the wedding tomorrow when he sees what I'm wearing. He'll probably go pale!"

She turned the call volume down low, and whatever the guy said made Jane giggle and scold.

"You're terrible! Tempting me so late at night~ Just wait, I'll take good care of you tonight, my love!"

With that, she ended the call and crept back into the bedroom.

I shut off my phone and lay still, feigning sleep.

Jane did not seem to care about waking me, as she dug through the closet with abandon.

I watched her face turn red as she slipped into a bunny costume, threw on a coat, and left.

A wave of nausea hit me, and I rushed to the bathroom, gagging over the sink.

Everywhere Jane touched felt tainted and sticky.

Rage bubbled inside me, a constant roar in my head, urging me to confront and punish the cheating couple.

However, it was not time yet. I slapped my own face, a sharp reminder to stay focused.

I whipped out my phone and shot a text to my assistant.

[Get every last one of Jane's family and friends, plus her work buddies, to the wedding. Oh, and set up eight HD cameras for a live feed,] I instructed.

The assistant was on it in a flash, his reply a mix of professional and personal.

[Ms. Lawrence would be so moved to know you're this devoted! Wishing you both a lifetime of joy!]

I read his well-wishes, a bitter laugh stuck in my throat.

After a heavy silence, I sent him an encrypted video with a stern warning.

[This is a special video for Jane's eyes only at the wedding. Keep it under wraps, got it?]

Once he confirmed, I collapsed onto the bed, my heart heavy.

Seven years of love, rotten from the get-go.

Hearing Jane's voice with Max was the last straw. I was done.

I tracked her phone to a hotel room and called without a second thought.

It rang and rang before she picked up, her breathless voice unable to hide the truth.

"Honey~ What's up?

"Why aren't you home? It's late," I asked, my voice a calm veneer over the icy storm in my gaze.

"I, my bestie, just flew in for the wedding, no place to crash. I was just getting her settled in at the hotel," she blurted out.

"Oh, really?" My voice turned frosty in an instant.

I booted the hotel door open, and there they were, Jane and Max Carter, caught in the act, their guilty figures laid bare before me.

"Ah!!!!"

The second Jane caught sight of me, she let out a shriek and snatched up the quilt, wrapping herself up like a burrito.

There I was, phone in hand, recording the whole scene with a poker face.

"So, this is your 'bestie'?" I asked.

Jane's eyes flashed with fury as she slapped my phone away.

"Seth, are you out of your mind? Spying on me? Really?"

Max, lounging like he owned the place, shot me a challenging look.

"Babe, did I mess up? Should I bail before Mr. Ferguson flips out over what I did to the dress? He's not going to be happy!"

Jane's voice was a soothing whisper to him.

Soaked to the bone, she stood there with tears streaming down her face, looking utterly lost."Seth, what does our seven-year relationship even mean to you? Won't you give me even one chance to make things right?"Are you really able to just walk away from all those years?"And that Christina, she's just a gold-digger, she doesn't love you one bit.""That's enough!" I interrupted her sharply, my face set in an icy expression."You have no right to meddle in my life. Christina and I go way back. I know my wife's true colors way better than you!"She's level-headed, strong, and independent, not someone you can just badmouth whenever you feel like it!"Jane's face, which was red with rage, went pale as she heard my words. She tried to speak but could not manage a single word."I have little patience for anything tainted, and I discard it without a second thought!"And that includes you!"The spark in Jane's eyes died out.The wail of police sirens filled the air, and before lo

The moment I texted her, she said yes right away. I was struck by her unwavering support. However, what was she getting at earlier? Was it possible she'd had a crush on me all along? The thought made me chuckle and shake my head. Was I really that full of myself? She was just trying to repay kindness by making such a huge sacrifice, and there I was, getting carried away with my imagination!I was carrying her into our wedding suite, about to set her down, when she looked at me with those clear, shining eyes, pulled me close by the neck, and kissed me.My mind went completely blank. As the kiss ended, she gazed at me earnestly and said, "Seth, did you know? I've had feelings for you for the longest time!"Her words hit me like a bolt of lightning, freezing me in place. She saw my shocked face and let out a laugh, her eyes shimmering with a mix of joy and sorrow."I know it's hard to believe, but you've been in my heart since I was just a kid!"I spent years fighting to reclaim

Jane's cheeks, once flushed with color, suddenly went pale as she locked eyes with me, teeth clenched in disbelief at my audacity to call her out in front of everyone."Thinking about it now, you've been riding my coattails for far too long, taking what's not yours. It's time I took it all back!"Do you even deserve it?"Get lost! Don't ruin my wedding day!"…Stung by my words, Jane spun around to escape, but her mother's grip was unyielding, anchoring her in place.Christina, clearly annoyed, gave me a sharp pinch on the waist and gestured to the bodyguards. With a swift motion, they secured the Lawrence family, ensuring they would not cause any more scenes."Sorry for the hassle today, I really put you out!"My attempt at an apology only seemed to sour Christina's mood further. She gripped her dress tightly, refusing to meet my gaze again. The wedding was thrown off course, so we had to reset and begin anew.Christina, in her traditional gown, shone brightly, her usual cut

"Now, someone strip that dress off this witch, and let's get on with our wedding.""Smack!"Christina's slap cut Jane off mid-sentence.We locked eyes, and I hit the projector button. The moment the video started, Jane's face turned to stone.…"Seriously, if he wasn't rolling in his family's cash, who would even bother with Mr. Stick-in-the-Mud?""Seth, Max was only trying to help you try out this marriage, and this is how you repay him? You're being ungrateful! No wonder your mom died so early! It's your karma!"I glanced at Jane's ghost-white face, arched an eyebrow, and grabbed the mic."Everyone's probably wondering why we switched brides at the last minute today. Well, these videos and recordings say it all!"The detective did his homework, laying out the whole soap opera for us: a lovey-dovey couple torn apart by cold, hard cash, then years of on-again, off-again drama, and finally, the big romantic rekindling. The crowd was eating it up.If Jane were not the star of

Christina dashed off to play hostess as soon as we hit the wedding spot.I barely rounded the corner by the break room when I heard Jane's mom laying into her."Jane, are you out of your mind? Getting married in that getup? Don't even start with me about Max. If the Fergusons hear about your little police station adventure last night, we're toast!"Jane's comeback was loud and clear."Mom, it's called fashion! You just don't get it! Plus, Seth already knows I hit the sheets with Max, and look, the wedding's still on!The wedding was in full swing, and she still did not change her tune. "Seth didn't listen to me and change the scene into a garden. If I don't get three villas as compensation, I'm not walking down that aisle! It's not me who'll be the laughingstock here."I tuned out her ranting. After having security clear the area, I made my way to mingle with the guests.Jane had the nerve to try to turn the Fergusons into the joke of Celestial City. Well, she was about to becom

"Don't sweat it. It's just a wedding dress. He shouldn't make a big deal out of it, especially since his mom doesn't even get my style."The dress you changed—it fits me!"My eyes drifted to the shredded, stained mess of a wedding dress on the couch.Calling it a wedding dress was generous; it was more like a slip than a gown.I could not help but laugh, the kind of laugh that bubbled up when anger left me unable to think straight. I hurled the ruined dress right at Jane's face."Perfect fit! It's as trashy as you are!"Jane's face turned a shade of thunder, and she swung at me.I dodged and returned the favor with a slap of my own.Max, ever the instigator, chimed in while Jane tried to regain her composure."Mr. Ferguson, we've known each other for ages. If there was anything real between us, she wouldn't be walking down the aisle with you!"Hurry up and apologize! Tonight I was just test-driving this marriage for you; you should be thanking me!"Jane, cradling her cheek,
