Chapter 1

The sound of running water whispered through the crack beneath the door, a secret conversation I was not meant to hear.

My chest tightened as I thought about the wedding dress, once a labor of love my mom sewed for a whole month, then just a chopped-up mini skirt that choked the air from my lungs.

It was only a month ago when Jane Lawrence, my fiancée, held my mom's frail hands on her deathbed, her eyes swimming with tears, and made a promise. "Mom, Seth and I will be together forever!" she said. "Just hold on a little longer. I want you to see us get married."

At the funeral, Jane clutched that same dress and wept so hard she nearly passed out.

I could not help but wonder if the girl who once treated the dress like a precious relic was the same one who just trashed it without a second thought.

The noise from the room faded, and I knew it was time to leave. I pulled out my phone and shot a quick text to my private investigator. It was time to find out what Jane was really up to.

I walked into my house, numb, and my gaze was immediately drawn to the massive wedding portrait on the living room wall. Jane's smile, once a beacon of joy, then seemed to mock me. I slumped onto the couch, lighting one cigarette after another, waiting for the night to drag on.

When Jane finally stumbled in, her steps uncertain, she found me in the dark and scowled. "What's wrong with you? Sitting here in the dark, trying to scare me?" she snapped. "I'm starving. I want spaghetti. Get on it, will you?"

I snuffed out my last cigarette, my voice rough as sandpaper. "How did the wedding dress fitting go today?"

Jane's face lit up with that familiar, guilty smile as she moved closer, wrapping her arms around me in her usual, cutesy way. "Honey, I'm so sorry! I messed up your mom's hard work," she cooed, "I was trying on the dress today, and I tripped. It got torn."

Her eyes brimmed with tears that never quite fell, and she planted a kiss on my cheek, a tried and true act of charm she pulled whenever she goofed up. It worked every time since we were together, but not tonight. Not anymore.

I shut my eyes tight, trying to still the storm of emotions raging inside me, and said,

"The wedding's tomorrow, and there's no time left to buy a wedding dress."

Jane's expression flipped in an instant, a triumphant grin spreading across her face.

"Don't sweat it. I had Max, the designer, tweak the dress ages ago. It's gonna be stunning and totally in vogue!

"Tomorrow, just brace yourself for the best surprise ever at the wedding!"

With that, she skipped off to freshen up, acting like the whole dress disaster was ancient history.

A sarcastic smile played on my lips.

I trudged into the bedroom and immediately spotted the condom that slipped from my girlfriend's coat.

Jane caught sight of it and dove into my embrace, her words a clumsy attempt to deflect,

"Babe, can you believe how fast time's gone? We're about to tie the knot."

As she went on and on about her love for me, all I had to do was glance down to see the love bites on her neck and the bright finger marks on her chest.

She must be brimming with confidence to leave her cheating tracks so blatantly uncovered.

I watched her calmly as she babbled about our future, then I dropped the bomb,

"This wedding, why aren't you inviting your friends? Isn't that a bit rough on you?

"Maybe we should invite them so they can share in our joy."

"No!"

She cut me off mid-sentence, her brow furrowed as she quickly shot down my idea.

Her nails dug into my arm, leaving behind white marks as she fumbled for words,

"I don't really know those people; It'd just be awkward. Better to have the genuine well-wishes of family!"

I laughed inside, though I put on a show of being conflicted, "However, from your side, it's just your parents."

"Babe, I don't want our wedding to be a public spectacle. I'm not good with crowds, can't handle all those pesky relatives."

Soaked to the bone, she stood there with tears streaming down her face, looking utterly lost."Seth, what does our seven-year relationship even mean to you? Won't you give me even one chance to make things right?"Are you really able to just walk away from all those years?"And that Christina, she's just a gold-digger, she doesn't love you one bit.""That's enough!" I interrupted her sharply, my face set in an icy expression."You have no right to meddle in my life. Christina and I go way back. I know my wife's true colors way better than you!"She's level-headed, strong, and independent, not someone you can just badmouth whenever you feel like it!"Jane's face, which was red with rage, went pale as she heard my words. She tried to speak but could not manage a single word."I have little patience for anything tainted, and I discard it without a second thought!"And that includes you!"The spark in Jane's eyes died out.The wail of police sirens filled the air, and before lo

The moment I texted her, she said yes right away. I was struck by her unwavering support. However, what was she getting at earlier? Was it possible she'd had a crush on me all along? The thought made me chuckle and shake my head. Was I really that full of myself? She was just trying to repay kindness by making such a huge sacrifice, and there I was, getting carried away with my imagination!I was carrying her into our wedding suite, about to set her down, when she looked at me with those clear, shining eyes, pulled me close by the neck, and kissed me.My mind went completely blank. As the kiss ended, she gazed at me earnestly and said, "Seth, did you know? I've had feelings for you for the longest time!"Her words hit me like a bolt of lightning, freezing me in place. She saw my shocked face and let out a laugh, her eyes shimmering with a mix of joy and sorrow."I know it's hard to believe, but you've been in my heart since I was just a kid!"I spent years fighting to reclaim

Jane's cheeks, once flushed with color, suddenly went pale as she locked eyes with me, teeth clenched in disbelief at my audacity to call her out in front of everyone."Thinking about it now, you've been riding my coattails for far too long, taking what's not yours. It's time I took it all back!"Do you even deserve it?"Get lost! Don't ruin my wedding day!"…Stung by my words, Jane spun around to escape, but her mother's grip was unyielding, anchoring her in place.Christina, clearly annoyed, gave me a sharp pinch on the waist and gestured to the bodyguards. With a swift motion, they secured the Lawrence family, ensuring they would not cause any more scenes."Sorry for the hassle today, I really put you out!"My attempt at an apology only seemed to sour Christina's mood further. She gripped her dress tightly, refusing to meet my gaze again. The wedding was thrown off course, so we had to reset and begin anew.Christina, in her traditional gown, shone brightly, her usual cut

"Now, someone strip that dress off this witch, and let's get on with our wedding.""Smack!"Christina's slap cut Jane off mid-sentence.We locked eyes, and I hit the projector button. The moment the video started, Jane's face turned to stone.…"Seriously, if he wasn't rolling in his family's cash, who would even bother with Mr. Stick-in-the-Mud?""Seth, Max was only trying to help you try out this marriage, and this is how you repay him? You're being ungrateful! No wonder your mom died so early! It's your karma!"I glanced at Jane's ghost-white face, arched an eyebrow, and grabbed the mic."Everyone's probably wondering why we switched brides at the last minute today. Well, these videos and recordings say it all!"The detective did his homework, laying out the whole soap opera for us: a lovey-dovey couple torn apart by cold, hard cash, then years of on-again, off-again drama, and finally, the big romantic rekindling. The crowd was eating it up.If Jane were not the star of

Christina dashed off to play hostess as soon as we hit the wedding spot.I barely rounded the corner by the break room when I heard Jane's mom laying into her."Jane, are you out of your mind? Getting married in that getup? Don't even start with me about Max. If the Fergusons hear about your little police station adventure last night, we're toast!"Jane's comeback was loud and clear."Mom, it's called fashion! You just don't get it! Plus, Seth already knows I hit the sheets with Max, and look, the wedding's still on!The wedding was in full swing, and she still did not change her tune. "Seth didn't listen to me and change the scene into a garden. If I don't get three villas as compensation, I'm not walking down that aisle! It's not me who'll be the laughingstock here."I tuned out her ranting. After having security clear the area, I made my way to mingle with the guests.Jane had the nerve to try to turn the Fergusons into the joke of Celestial City. Well, she was about to becom

"Don't sweat it. It's just a wedding dress. He shouldn't make a big deal out of it, especially since his mom doesn't even get my style."The dress you changed—it fits me!"My eyes drifted to the shredded, stained mess of a wedding dress on the couch.Calling it a wedding dress was generous; it was more like a slip than a gown.I could not help but laugh, the kind of laugh that bubbled up when anger left me unable to think straight. I hurled the ruined dress right at Jane's face."Perfect fit! It's as trashy as you are!"Jane's face turned a shade of thunder, and she swung at me.I dodged and returned the favor with a slap of my own.Max, ever the instigator, chimed in while Jane tried to regain her composure."Mr. Ferguson, we've known each other for ages. If there was anything real between us, she wouldn't be walking down the aisle with you!"Hurry up and apologize! Tonight I was just test-driving this marriage for you; you should be thanking me!"Jane, cradling her cheek,
