As Michael Damari walked through the hallways of Oak Bridge Secondary School, popularly known as Oaky, on Turner Street, Carterville, thoughts of how close he was to closing this chapter of his life ran through his mind. In a few weeks, he would write his final exams, become a legal adult and graduate a little over two months.
'How time flies.' He thought.
He could still recall clearly, his first day at Oaky. Hair cropped till almost bald, although he quickly learned that baldness didn't suit him and grew his hair out. He wore an oversized, neatly pressed uniform which had caused a great deal of itchiness for at least a week. His school bag had been weighed down with a ton of brand new books which had caused him a serious back pain till he realised he could actually follow the timetable and not pack for every subject he took.
He was straight out of Primary school and ripe for the picking. Within the first few days of being an Oaky, Seniors had interrogated him and apparently, found him fitting because they acknowledged him in the hallways. He had made several acquaintances and found that he especially clicked with a few people which over the years and had formed a tight bond with. Oh, here was one of them now.
"Michael my man, how's the trip to dreamland?" I looked behind me to see Ayo, one of my close buddies who had the occasional tendency to rhyme when he spoke. He was also an aspiring artiste who was determined to make it big in the entertainment industry.Ayo’s father was an American and his mother was African-American, you could say his facial features were pleasing to the eyes. A
To my surprise, there was no one there. I looked left, right and even down too, but still nothing.Weird.I thought, as I returned to the kitchen."Ola, strange enough there was no one…" I started to say before I
When the clock struck eleven o'clock, I heard the doorbell ring. By this time, Ola was upstairs and fast asleep.I went to the front door and let my mom in."Good evening mom. How was your day? Hope work wasn't too stressful?" I said, taking her bags from her.
Ola blinked, startled by the sound of the front door as it banged shut."He did not just do that…" She trailed off in her thoughts when she noticed the piece of paper and some money on the table. She picked them up and glanced at the paper which had only two words written on it.Feed Yourself!
I did a double take. Was that still the same girl I saw earlier? A little bit of glam and she was nearly an entirely different person. When Cee-Cee made her way up to the stage, she danced around with the rest of the band and gave the crowd a show of her own. At some point, she even got Ayo to spin and dip her. When we were done with our performance, we made our way off the stage with the crowd still cheering wildly behind us. I had to admit, I loved every second of it. We went back to the private room.
On my way out, I bumped into Ayo who had made himself at home in the food and drinks section. In his hands were two stuffed bags filled with what I assumed to be takeaways."What's the rush man?" He called out as he spotted me in the crowd."I've got to get home. Something's come up."
"I was instructed to direct you once you arrive. I need you to sign over here first and then I'll take you to your mother."Once I had signed, I looked up eagerly at the nurse for the next step."Please come with me." She said.
"Alright, thank you doctor." Then I suddenly remembered. "What about the medical bills?""I wanted to speak to you about that. The catering company covered a percentage of the bills. However, there is still an outstanding and your mother also needs medication. I'll have the nurse inform you about the exact details."Just then, there was a beeping noise.
