Chapter 2 Because I Loved You

Author: Toto
When Rosie graduated from college, Nathan told me he would be right back. In the end, he missed our fifth wedding anniversary.

Another time, she was frightened in the middle of the night.

He made me the same promise, saying he would return soon. Then, he left me alone in a hospital room only hours after I had lost our baby.

So, when he told me again that he would be right back, I just nodded and said, "Okay."

Relief appeared on his face almost immediately, as though he had finally been forgiven.

What Nathan did not know was that I had not forgotten anything. I remembered every detail, and I remembered them far too clearly.

…

That night, as a nurse was changing my wound dressing, my phone buzzed three times.

The first message was from Rosie.

'Joslyn, having fun pretending you lost your memory?'

A second message followed almost immediately.

'He saved me because he loves me.'

Then came the third message, this time with a photo attached.

Nathan sat beside Rosie's hospital bed, leaning down to fasten the cuff of her gown as she rested against his shoulder, a faint smile on her lips.

I stared at the picture for a long time before deleting all three messages.

The nurse must have mistaken my silence for pain, judging by the concern on her face. "Do you want me to call your husband back?"

I closed my eyes and answered quietly, "No."

…

The next morning, Nathan came back with a copy of our marriage certificate and an old photograph. He placed both of them in front of me. "This was the day we got married. Look at you. You were so happy."

I was really smiling in the photo.

At twenty-four, I stood outside city hall in a white dress, clutching our marriage certificate close to my chest as though it were my most precious treasure. Nathan stood next to me in a sharp suit, appearing youthful, handsome, and utterly untouchable.

The way he looked at me was so tender that anyone would have believed he would love me forever.

Apparently, I had believed it too.

I studied the photograph for a while before looking up at him. "Why did I marry you?"

Nathan froze, and for a long moment, he did not answer. Then, he replied quietly, "Because I loved you."

I almost laughed.

Before I could respond, a knock sounded at the door, and Nathan's mother, Livia Rice, stepped into the room carrying a thermos.

The moment she saw me awake, her eyes reddened with relief. "Joslyn, thank God you're okay. Nathan hasn't slept properly in two days. He's barely left your side. Just look at him—he's worn himself down."

I said nothing.

Livia placed the thermos on the table and sighed. "You shouldn't be too hard on him. Rosie lost her parents when she was young, and she practically grew up with our family. Nathan has always treated her like a real sister."

She paused before adding, "He panicked in that situation. People don't always make the right choices when they're terrified."

"The right choice?" I repeated.

She was at a loss for words, and Nathan immediately cut in, "Mom, enough."

But Livia did not stop. "A marriage won't last if you keep holding on to every mistake. You're awake now, and Rosie only sprained her ankle. She's always been sensitive, so something like this affects her more emotionally."

I lowered my gaze to my right leg, where a heavy cast stretched from below my knee to my ankle. The doctor had already warned me that if rehabilitation did not go well, I might walk with a limp for the rest of my life.

Livia glanced where I was looking, a flicker of discomfort crossing her face before she quickly looked away.

"Women who take everything too seriously only end up hurting themselves," she said.

I looked back at her. "Was I always like that?"

She blinked in surprise.

Nathan reached for my hand. "You were always easygoing."

For some reason, that word hurt more than it should have.

I pulled my hand away and looked at him. "So, I'm not easygoing anymore?"

Nathan's expression darkened. "Joslyn, that's not what I meant."

Before he could say anything else, Rosie's aide appeared at the door. "Mr. Riley, Ms. Cooper says the medicine tastes awful. She refuses to take it."

Nathan frowned. "Then, handle it."

The aide hesitated. "She says she'll only take it if you're there."

Livia immediately waved him toward the door. "Go check on her. You know Rosie has always hated taking medicine. I'll stay with Joslyn."

Nathan looked at me, but he did not move right away.

For one ridiculous second, I actually thought he might stay.

Seamus did not answer for me. He simply stood quietly at my side. I said, "Because when I needed him, he was there." Nathan's fingers tightened around the bouquet, crumpling the paper around the flowers. "What if I'm there from now on?" I looked at him. "I don't need you anymore." Nathan fell silent. By the time he finally spoke again, almost everyone had already left the lobby. "Is there really no chance for me?" "No." His voice grew quieter. "Not even if I spend the rest of my life making it up to you?""Your life belongs to you," I replied. "I don't want you to spend it making things up to me. And I don't want you waiting for me either." For the last time, I said his name with complete seriousness. "Nathan, let me go and let yourself free too." Nathan lowered his head. A tear slipped down his cheek and landed on the crushed flowers in his hands. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry, yet I felt neither satisfaction nor hesitation. All I felt was a strang

Nathan stayed outside until the rehabilitation centre was about to close for the night. Before he left, he handed the security guard an envelope and asked him to give it to me. Inside were the divorce papers. He had signed them. He had filled in the section on the division of assets. The house, the cars, the savings, even a portion of his shares in Riley Holdings—he had left all of it to me. At the bottom was a short note. 'Joslyn, I signed it. If you don't want to see me, I'll wait outside.' I read the note once, then tore it in half. The divorce papers, however, I kept. ... The next morning, I had just finished my first round of therapy when Nathan showed up again. This time, he did not come inside or ask a nurse to bring me downstairs. He simply left breakfast for me at the front desk. It was from a little dumpling place on the west side of town that I used to love. When we were together, whenever I asked for something from there, Nathan always gave the same

Nathan's face tightened. "She didn't cry." Rosie stared at him in disbelief. "She signed divorce papers. How is that any different?" "She was hurt." Rosie's voice rose. "She was hurt, Nathan. Not you!" Her outburst drew several glances from people passing through the lobby. Nathan noticed and lowered his voice. "Go back to your room." "No." "Rosie." She held his gaze, refusing to move. "If you go to Pinehurst today, I'll release this." Then, she pulled out her phone and opened a video. It was footage from the crash. The camera shook violently as wrecked cars blocked the mountain road. My SUV had smashed through the guardrail, leaving half of it hanging over the cliff. A shard of twisted metal had pierced the window, and blood ran down my face as I clung to Nathan's hand with both of mine. There was nothing beneath my feet. Then, Rosie's crying came through the recording. Nathan turned toward the sound. A moment later, his jaw tightened, and he began prying m

Rosie asked Nathan, "Then, will you hate her?" He shook his head. "No." Rosie smiled faintly, even as tears slipped down her cheeks. "See? You don't hate anyone. I'm the only one who keeps suffering." She let go of his sleeve and headed for the stairs, but halfway up, she grasped the railing and staggered. Nathan caught her quickly to keep her from falling. "Careful." Rosie leaned against his chest. "My leg hurts." "Sit down." She looked up at him. "Will you take me to the hospital?" Nathan glanced toward the front door, then pulled out his phone and called George. "I need to know where Joslyn was transferred." George's response was immediate and firm. He refused to reveal anything about my transfer. Nathan ended the call and turned back to Rosie. "I'll take you to the hospital. After that, I'm going to look for her." She lifted her tear-streaked face. "What if you can't find her?" "I'll keep looking." "What about me?" "You have an aide. She'll take care of

Nathan called Dr. Newman as soon as he could. He demanded, "Dr. Newman, where was Joslyn transferred?" "I'm sorry, Mr. Riley, but I'm not authorized to give you that information." "I'm her husband." "She specifically asked us not to disclose her location to you." Nathan fell silent for a moment, then said, "Her injuries require family care." "She's already made arrangements." The call ended, leaving Nathan standing there with his phone still pressed to his ear. Then, a message from Rosie appeared on the screen. 'I suddenly can't breathe. Can you come back?' He stared at it but did not reply. A few seconds later, his phone rang. It was Rosie. "Nathan, I'm sorry," she said softly. "I'm not trying to bother you." "Rosie, I have something to take care of today." "You're looking for Joslyn, aren't you?" "That's between her and me." Rosie paused briefly before speaking again. "She doesn't want you anymore. Why are you still chasing after her?" Nathan's voice

  • When You Let Me Fall   Chapter 6 This Time, I Left

By the time Nathan returned to my room, a nurse was already stripping the bed. The bed was empty. The only thing left behind was an envelope of documents resting on the pillow. Nathan stopped in the doorway. "Where's Joslyn?" The nurse turned to him. "She's been transferred to another hospital." "To which hospital?" "I'm sorry, but she specifically asked us not to disclose that information." Nathan crossed the room and tore open the envelope. Inside were the divorce papers. My signature was already written at the bottom of the first page. He flipped through the documents quickly. When he reached the section on dividing assets, his hand froze. The house, the cars, the savings—I had asked for none of them. The nurse held out a phone. "She asked me to give you this." It had only one recording. My voice came through the speaker. "Nathan, I signed the papers. You can handle the rest." After a brief pause, I added, "Don't look for me." The recording ended. Nathan qu
