Chapter 3 The Child I Remembered

Author: Toto
After a long silence, Nathan finally spoke. "Joslyn, I'll be right back."

I smiled faintly. "Nathan, is that the only line you know?"

His expression stiffened, but he left anyway.

…

Once he was gone, Livia sat next to my bed and poured broth from the thermos into a bowl.

"Joslyn, I know you're hurt, but you've known Nathan for ten years and been married to him for five. You know him better than anyone."

She handed me the bowl and continued, "He truly loves you. Rosie's been through a lot, and Nathan has always felt responsible for taking care of her."

I stared at the thin layer of oil floating on the broth's surface. "So, because she's had a difficult life, I deserve this?"

Livia's hand froze, and her expression immediately hardened. "How can you say something like that?"

I gave her a calm smile. "Maybe losing my memory made my temper worse too."

She had nothing to say to that.

…

I barely slept that night. When exhaustion finally overtook me, I dreamed about events from three years ago.

In my dream, I was sprinting barefoot along a hospital corridor, my dress soaked in blood.

A small child was ahead of me, but no matter how quickly I ran, I could not catch up to him. His face was not clearly visible. He just stood at the end of the corridor and softly called, "Mommy…"

Pain ripped through my chest as I reached for him.

Just as my fingertips were about to brush his sleeve, Nathan's voice echoed down the hallway. "Rosie needs me more right now. I'll be right back."

Suddenly, the walls around me started to crumble.

Darkness gradually engulfed the child as I lunged forward, shouting his name. When I finally reached out, all I got was a handful of cold blood.

"No!"

I jolted awake with a gasp. My heart pounded against my ribs, and my back was drenched in sweat.

The dim bedside lamp illuminated the room, and Nathan sat beside me, appearing to have been there for quite a while based on his look.

When I opened my eyes, he leaned in and grasped my hand. "Joslyn, what's wrong? Are you in pain?"

I looked at him, and before I could stop myself, tears slid down my cheeks.

The dream vividly replayed events from three years ago, bringing back sharp memories. I recalled every drop of blood, every surge of pain, and the doctor's words once it had all concluded that we could not save the baby.

"I dreamed about a child," I mentioned.

Nathan went completely still.

I looked at him as though I were confused and afraid of his answer. "Nathan… Was I ever pregnant?"

Silence filled the room.

He did not respond immediately, but his shock was obvious. The colour had already drained from his face.

I swallowed hard. "What happened to my baby?"

Nathan slowly lowered his gaze, and his fingers tightened around mine. "We lost the baby."

I had known the answer all along, but hearing him voice it out loud still felt like someone had reached into my chest and torn open a wound that never completely healed.

I asked, "Why?"

Nathan stayed silent for a long moment before finally saying, "That night, you experienced severe cramps, and I didn't go to the hospital with you."

I stared at him. "Where did you go?"

His throat tightened. "Something happened to Rosie at a party."

That one sentence tore open the wound I had tried so hard to bury. The words echoed in my mind, exactly as they had in the dream.

'Rosie needs me more right now.'

Three years earlier, he had chosen her during my pregnancy and bleeding. At the cliff, he chose her once more.

I closed my eyes for a moment before looking back at him. "So, you left your pregnant wife alone because of her."

"No!" Nathan's eyes reddened as he shook his head. "I didn't know it was that serious. I had the driver take you to the hospital. I thought there was still time—"

I cut in, "But the baby didn't have time."

Nathan fell silent.

I pulled my hand from his and turned toward the window. "Get out. I don't want to see you."

He didn't leave.

After a long silence, I heard his voice behind me, low and broken. "Joslyn… I'm sorry."

Seamus did not answer for me. He simply stood quietly at my side. I said, "Because when I needed him, he was there." Nathan's fingers tightened around the bouquet, crumpling the paper around the flowers. "What if I'm there from now on?" I looked at him. "I don't need you anymore." Nathan fell silent. By the time he finally spoke again, almost everyone had already left the lobby. "Is there really no chance for me?" "No." His voice grew quieter. "Not even if I spend the rest of my life making it up to you?""Your life belongs to you," I replied. "I don't want you to spend it making things up to me. And I don't want you waiting for me either." For the last time, I said his name with complete seriousness. "Nathan, let me go and let yourself free too." Nathan lowered his head. A tear slipped down his cheek and landed on the crushed flowers in his hands. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry, yet I felt neither satisfaction nor hesitation. All I felt was a strang

Nathan stayed outside until the rehabilitation centre was about to close for the night. Before he left, he handed the security guard an envelope and asked him to give it to me. Inside were the divorce papers. He had signed them. He had filled in the section on the division of assets. The house, the cars, the savings, even a portion of his shares in Riley Holdings—he had left all of it to me. At the bottom was a short note. 'Joslyn, I signed it. If you don't want to see me, I'll wait outside.' I read the note once, then tore it in half. The divorce papers, however, I kept. ... The next morning, I had just finished my first round of therapy when Nathan showed up again. This time, he did not come inside or ask a nurse to bring me downstairs. He simply left breakfast for me at the front desk. It was from a little dumpling place on the west side of town that I used to love. When we were together, whenever I asked for something from there, Nathan always gave the same

Nathan's face tightened. "She didn't cry." Rosie stared at him in disbelief. "She signed divorce papers. How is that any different?" "She was hurt." Rosie's voice rose. "She was hurt, Nathan. Not you!" Her outburst drew several glances from people passing through the lobby. Nathan noticed and lowered his voice. "Go back to your room." "No." "Rosie." She held his gaze, refusing to move. "If you go to Pinehurst today, I'll release this." Then, she pulled out her phone and opened a video. It was footage from the crash. The camera shook violently as wrecked cars blocked the mountain road. My SUV had smashed through the guardrail, leaving half of it hanging over the cliff. A shard of twisted metal had pierced the window, and blood ran down my face as I clung to Nathan's hand with both of mine. There was nothing beneath my feet. Then, Rosie's crying came through the recording. Nathan turned toward the sound. A moment later, his jaw tightened, and he began prying m

Rosie asked Nathan, "Then, will you hate her?" He shook his head. "No." Rosie smiled faintly, even as tears slipped down her cheeks. "See? You don't hate anyone. I'm the only one who keeps suffering." She let go of his sleeve and headed for the stairs, but halfway up, she grasped the railing and staggered. Nathan caught her quickly to keep her from falling. "Careful." Rosie leaned against his chest. "My leg hurts." "Sit down." She looked up at him. "Will you take me to the hospital?" Nathan glanced toward the front door, then pulled out his phone and called George. "I need to know where Joslyn was transferred." George's response was immediate and firm. He refused to reveal anything about my transfer. Nathan ended the call and turned back to Rosie. "I'll take you to the hospital. After that, I'm going to look for her." She lifted her tear-streaked face. "What if you can't find her?" "I'll keep looking." "What about me?" "You have an aide. She'll take care of

Nathan called Dr. Newman as soon as he could. He demanded, "Dr. Newman, where was Joslyn transferred?" "I'm sorry, Mr. Riley, but I'm not authorized to give you that information." "I'm her husband." "She specifically asked us not to disclose her location to you." Nathan fell silent for a moment, then said, "Her injuries require family care." "She's already made arrangements." The call ended, leaving Nathan standing there with his phone still pressed to his ear. Then, a message from Rosie appeared on the screen. 'I suddenly can't breathe. Can you come back?' He stared at it but did not reply. A few seconds later, his phone rang. It was Rosie. "Nathan, I'm sorry," she said softly. "I'm not trying to bother you." "Rosie, I have something to take care of today." "You're looking for Joslyn, aren't you?" "That's between her and me." Rosie paused briefly before speaking again. "She doesn't want you anymore. Why are you still chasing after her?" Nathan's voice

  • When You Let Me Fall   Chapter 6 This Time, I Left

By the time Nathan returned to my room, a nurse was already stripping the bed. The bed was empty. The only thing left behind was an envelope of documents resting on the pillow. Nathan stopped in the doorway. "Where's Joslyn?" The nurse turned to him. "She's been transferred to another hospital." "To which hospital?" "I'm sorry, but she specifically asked us not to disclose that information." Nathan crossed the room and tore open the envelope. Inside were the divorce papers. My signature was already written at the bottom of the first page. He flipped through the documents quickly. When he reached the section on dividing assets, his hand froze. The house, the cars, the savings—I had asked for none of them. The nurse held out a phone. "She asked me to give you this." It had only one recording. My voice came through the speaker. "Nathan, I signed the papers. You can handle the rest." After a brief pause, I added, "Don't look for me." The recording ended. Nathan qu
