Chapter 4 She Called, and He Went

Author: Toto
Nathan's voice was so hoarse that he barely sounded like himself.

"What happened to our baby was my fault, and so was what happened at the cliff." He swallowed hard before continuing, "I kept choosing to leave you behind because I convinced myself you would always be there waiting for me."

I didn't turn around.

…

After a moment, Nathan stood and moved around the bed until he was facing me. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked completely exhausted. "I've made a decision. Starting today, I'm cutting Rosie out of my life."

That finally made me look at him.

The moment he caught my attention, he seemed to hold on to it like it was his last chance.

He said, "I'll make arrangements for her to leave, and I'll talk to my family. From now on, whatever happens to her won't be my responsibility."

His voice grew firmer as he went on, "I'll take care of you. I'll be there through physical therapy, no matter how long it takes. And whether your leg fully heals or not, I'm staying."

He sounded so certain, as if saying the right words now could somehow erase everything that had already happened—the baby we had lost, the years he had made me wait, and the memory of him prying my fingers from his hand one by one while I hung over the edge of a cliff.

I watched him for a moment before asking, "What if Rosie were standing outside that door right now?"

Nathan froze.

A second later, something shattered in the hallway.

A cup had fallen to the floor, and Rosie stood in the doorway, her face ghostly pale as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Nathan…" Her voice trembled. "Are you really abandoning me?"

The determination on Nathan's face vanished almost instantly, replaced by panic. Without thinking, he stepped toward her. "Rosie, don't get upset. That's not what I meant."

A quiet laugh escaped me, and he stopped in his tracks.

He turned back to me, panic flashing across his face. "Joslyn, I'm just worried she might do something. Give me a minute. I'll explain everything to her, then come right back."

There it was again—the same promise I had heard countless times before. For ten years, Nathan had been asking me to wait for him.

I leaned back against the pillow and closed my eyes. "Go."

He hesitated for a couple of seconds before following Rosie out of the room.

When the door clicked shut behind him, I opened my eyes to find my pillow already damp with tears.

…

That night, Rosie slit her wrist.

Nathan followed her gurney all the way to the emergency room and did not return until the next morning.

By the time he finally walked back into my room, I was already dressed. He stopped short the moment he saw me.

"Joslyn, where are you going?"

"For some tests," I replied.

"I'll go with you."

"There's no need."

I adjusted my sleeve, then looked at him. "Is Ms. Cooper awake?"

Nathan paused at the foot of my bed before answering, "They got to her in time. There was no nerve damage, but the doctor says she's at risk of hurting herself again. She can't be left alone."

I gave a small nod. "Then, take care of her if you want, Mr. Riley. You don't need to explain yourself to me."

His expression changed at once. "What did you just call me?"

"Mr. Riley."

His brows drew together. "I'm your husband."

I shot back, "A marriage certificate only proves we got registered. It doesn't prove anything else."

"Joslyn, what I promised you hasn't changed. Once Rosie is stable, I'll send her away." Nathan reached for me, but I stepped back before his hand could touch mine.

I looked at him. "And if she's never stable?"

"She will be."

I asked, "What happens the next time she cuts her wrist? Do you stay with her another night? And if she overdoses, do you stay for a month?"

I held his gaze. "She's threatening you with her life, Nathan. Do you really think you can walk away from that?"

Nathan's jaw tightened, and for a moment, he said nothing. Finally, he admitted quietly, "I can't just stand by and let her die."

I nodded once. "But you can stand there and let me wait."

"That's not what I mean."

"No," I said, my voice still calm. "It's just what you've been doing to me for the past ten years."

Just then, a nurse came in with my medication, breaking the tension between us.

Nathan took the cup of water from her and held it out to me. "Take your medicine first."

I looked at the cup but made no move to take it. "Put it down."

Seamus did not answer for me. He simply stood quietly at my side. I said, "Because when I needed him, he was there." Nathan's fingers tightened around the bouquet, crumpling the paper around the flowers. "What if I'm there from now on?" I looked at him. "I don't need you anymore." Nathan fell silent. By the time he finally spoke again, almost everyone had already left the lobby. "Is there really no chance for me?" "No." His voice grew quieter. "Not even if I spend the rest of my life making it up to you?""Your life belongs to you," I replied. "I don't want you to spend it making things up to me. And I don't want you waiting for me either." For the last time, I said his name with complete seriousness. "Nathan, let me go and let yourself free too." Nathan lowered his head. A tear slipped down his cheek and landed on the crushed flowers in his hands. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry, yet I felt neither satisfaction nor hesitation. All I felt was a strang

Nathan stayed outside until the rehabilitation centre was about to close for the night. Before he left, he handed the security guard an envelope and asked him to give it to me. Inside were the divorce papers. He had signed them. He had filled in the section on the division of assets. The house, the cars, the savings, even a portion of his shares in Riley Holdings—he had left all of it to me. At the bottom was a short note. 'Joslyn, I signed it. If you don't want to see me, I'll wait outside.' I read the note once, then tore it in half. The divorce papers, however, I kept. ... The next morning, I had just finished my first round of therapy when Nathan showed up again. This time, he did not come inside or ask a nurse to bring me downstairs. He simply left breakfast for me at the front desk. It was from a little dumpling place on the west side of town that I used to love. When we were together, whenever I asked for something from there, Nathan always gave the same

Nathan's face tightened. "She didn't cry." Rosie stared at him in disbelief. "She signed divorce papers. How is that any different?" "She was hurt." Rosie's voice rose. "She was hurt, Nathan. Not you!" Her outburst drew several glances from people passing through the lobby. Nathan noticed and lowered his voice. "Go back to your room." "No." "Rosie." She held his gaze, refusing to move. "If you go to Pinehurst today, I'll release this." Then, she pulled out her phone and opened a video. It was footage from the crash. The camera shook violently as wrecked cars blocked the mountain road. My SUV had smashed through the guardrail, leaving half of it hanging over the cliff. A shard of twisted metal had pierced the window, and blood ran down my face as I clung to Nathan's hand with both of mine. There was nothing beneath my feet. Then, Rosie's crying came through the recording. Nathan turned toward the sound. A moment later, his jaw tightened, and he began prying m

Rosie asked Nathan, "Then, will you hate her?" He shook his head. "No." Rosie smiled faintly, even as tears slipped down her cheeks. "See? You don't hate anyone. I'm the only one who keeps suffering." She let go of his sleeve and headed for the stairs, but halfway up, she grasped the railing and staggered. Nathan caught her quickly to keep her from falling. "Careful." Rosie leaned against his chest. "My leg hurts." "Sit down." She looked up at him. "Will you take me to the hospital?" Nathan glanced toward the front door, then pulled out his phone and called George. "I need to know where Joslyn was transferred." George's response was immediate and firm. He refused to reveal anything about my transfer. Nathan ended the call and turned back to Rosie. "I'll take you to the hospital. After that, I'm going to look for her." She lifted her tear-streaked face. "What if you can't find her?" "I'll keep looking." "What about me?" "You have an aide. She'll take care of

Nathan called Dr. Newman as soon as he could. He demanded, "Dr. Newman, where was Joslyn transferred?" "I'm sorry, Mr. Riley, but I'm not authorized to give you that information." "I'm her husband." "She specifically asked us not to disclose her location to you." Nathan fell silent for a moment, then said, "Her injuries require family care." "She's already made arrangements." The call ended, leaving Nathan standing there with his phone still pressed to his ear. Then, a message from Rosie appeared on the screen. 'I suddenly can't breathe. Can you come back?' He stared at it but did not reply. A few seconds later, his phone rang. It was Rosie. "Nathan, I'm sorry," she said softly. "I'm not trying to bother you." "Rosie, I have something to take care of today." "You're looking for Joslyn, aren't you?" "That's between her and me." Rosie paused briefly before speaking again. "She doesn't want you anymore. Why are you still chasing after her?" Nathan's voice

  • When You Let Me Fall   Chapter 6 This Time, I Left

By the time Nathan returned to my room, a nurse was already stripping the bed. The bed was empty. The only thing left behind was an envelope of documents resting on the pillow. Nathan stopped in the doorway. "Where's Joslyn?" The nurse turned to him. "She's been transferred to another hospital." "To which hospital?" "I'm sorry, but she specifically asked us not to disclose that information." Nathan crossed the room and tore open the envelope. Inside were the divorce papers. My signature was already written at the bottom of the first page. He flipped through the documents quickly. When he reached the section on dividing assets, his hand froze. The house, the cars, the savings—I had asked for none of them. The nurse held out a phone. "She asked me to give you this." It had only one recording. My voice came through the speaker. "Nathan, I signed the papers. You can handle the rest." After a brief pause, I added, "Don't look for me." The recording ended. Nathan qu
