"Miss Raymonds, you have a call on line two." Annabelle, Jade's secretary and executive assistant informed her over the intercom, shuffling of papers sounding in the background.
"From?" Jade asked, tapping her platinum black pen on the desk and searching for files with the other hand, the telephone was cradled between her ear and shoulders.
"Mr. Freeman." He was a potential investor who always found a way of making his demands and terms sly. She didn't intend to deal with him first thing in the morning.
"Hold the call, and put him through line three in ten minutes. I'm trying to contact Chloe here." She dialled again, wondering why she couldn't get through to her younger sister. Had Chloe Raymonds blocked her number? No way. She hit the dial button again, waiting.
"Okay ma'am" Annabelle replied, and disconnected the intercom to do as she asked.
Jade dropped the pen on the table in frustration, wondering where she had dropped the document she had been looking for since morning.
She was sure she had seen it before leaving the office the previous day, or had she not?
Seeing that Chloe's line wasn't connecting, she dropped the telephone and stood, running her hands on her plaid skirt to get rid of the creases before she walked out of her expansive office with the plan of asking her assistant if she had seen it.
Pushing the door open, she came face to face with Annabelle who sat with her legs crossed, taking a call and giggling while fiddling with her hair.
Annabelle froze the moment she saw her boss, her eyes drawing perfect circles.
"Oh shit! I'll call you back." She muttered, slamming the phone and standing guiltily.
Saying nothing, Jade made herself comfortable on the seat assigned to clients while waiting for their appointments, her lips turned upwards in a smirk with her eyes fixated on her assistant.
"It's not what you think, seriously." Annabelle defended herself, shaking her head in denial. When Jade didn't make any move to reply but kept staring at her with a sly grin plastered on her face, she heaved a sigh. "Okay, I'm with Jason now. You can get that smug off your face."
Jade laughed, throwing back her head." Annabelle, you are just such a terrible liar. Couldn't even keep up with your lie for a minute. Anyway, I didn't come to look into your love life, although I would do well to scold you for abandoning your duties to flirt with my business partner..."
"Oh Shit! You make it sound as though..."
"Whatever, Annabelle. Did you see the big brown envelope I received from Mr. Freeman yesterday?" It was a document that contained the man's many demands, terms and conditions, and Jade always ensured to go through every detail herself before entering into a contract.
Annabelle narrowed her eyes to slits, tapping her temple with a finger as though it would help her remember faster. "You mean before you and Mr. Mears locked yourselves in your office and..."
"You complete that statement young woman, and be ready to kiss your job good bye." Jade interrupted, feigning seriousness. But she found it humorous, just as she had enjoyed irritating Ricky. For some reason, it had been interesting making him annoyed.
She blamed it on the knowledge she had acquired earlier before meeting him. She had heard tales of how he fought dirty and burnt companies to ashes, big and small alike. She hadn't paid attention to him till he had targeted a company that hers had an affiliation with.
That was the moment she had also come to learn that he was making moves on her corporation next, and decided to throw the first punch instead.
So it was definitely because of the tales she had heard that she had found it amusing putting him in his place.
But of all the stories told of him, she couldn't deny that one was particularly true. The man was on another level of attractiveness with that chiselled jaw, dark blue eyes and strong arrogant nose which was only seen in illustrations. He was like an artwork; perfectly painted and carefully created to avoid any flaw.
She had felt that aura of sex appeal he exuded the moment she set her eyes on him while in the conference room, and damn, the rumours had got nothing on him. His lips were firm and sensual, blood red pair of sin which should only belong to fantastical creatures like vampires.
The man was sexy, she had admitted to herself, but it wasn't going to change the fact that he was an asshole...
"Wasn't going to say anything boss!" Annabelle made a mock salute, and continued, pulling the drawers open. Jade blinked twice, realising then that she had been thinking of Ricky fucking Mears. She admonished herself inwardly.
"I think you left it with me along with the Jewelry deal contract documents. Erhmm, good, I've got it." Annabelle pulled out the brown envelope from the lower cabinet, handing over to Jade who quickly enclosed her well-manicured fingers around it.
"Great! Thought I would go crazy having to tell that man to send it again. You're the best, Anna." Jade exclaimed, raising her hands in exaggerated gratitude.
"Does that mean I don't get to kiss my job goodbye any time soon?"
Rolling her eyes, Jade replied, "As long as you don't talk about how hot Mr. Mears is, or try to matchmake me with anyone." It was all that Annabelle had been doing since the previous day; talking about Ricky and describing his physique.
It was one of the perks that came with having one's best friend as her executive assistant. Annabelle always got nosy about her male clients, especially the young ones.
"Okay boss! Will do those."
"Will do or won't do?"
"Will, won't? Now I'm confused, what was I going to say before?"
Rolling her eyes again, Jade broke the seal of the document and muttered, "crazy woman" before going to her office.
"I heard that you know!" Annabelle screamed behind her. Giving her the middle finger, Jade replied in the same loud voice, "Very much aware of that."
Annabelle laughed, opening a file to look over it."Says the queen of professionalism. Saying fuck you isn't professional!"
"I learnt from the best. And by the way, I didn't say fuck you, I only demonstrated with my finger. Focus on your work, and connect me to Mr. Freeman now. Chloe's gone incommunicado." But before Annabelle could reply, the door to the CEO's office slammed shut, and she was left alone.
"Alright, thank you Mr. Freeman, bye." Jade dropped the receiver, reclining back in the executive seat to stare at the most recent picture in her office with pride, a gigantic portrait of her in a business suit. Who would have thought she could achieve this within three years? She wondered, closing her eyes to inhale breaths of satisfaction. When she had decided to take over the company from the claws of her father whose existence she didn't even want to think about, started working as a model to generate funds while working as a secretary, she hadn't imagined that she would soar this high. The call had gone well, and if Mr. Freeman didn't change his mind again, she would be embarking on another huge project soon with the money she would generate from him. Recalling how far she had come in the business world while maintaining anonymity from the press and the previous day's events involving a certain young man, she chuckled quietly. The look of astonishment on Ricky's face at the r
The infuriating woman was running late. Ricky checked the time again by his watch, tapping his fingers on the glass table as he wondered how the investors would react the moment they arrived and realised that Jade wasn't present after all. And for Pete's sake, could the members of the board stop infuriating him further with their endless questions? "Why isn't she here already?" "You 're sure she's still coming?" "Can't you contact her office?" "Are you sure the intern you sent did his job right?" There went the complaints from the members of board, ten minutes to the time stipulated for the arrival of the investors without Ms. Raymonds either making herself present for the meeting or sending a message ahead. Their tone held disapproval, and he knew they were disappointed at him for handing the project over to an intern. Although he pretended as though he didn't care, sipping at his glass of water and scrolling through his phone without saying a word, he did regret not g
"Alright, shall we begin the meeting please?" The old man Ricky found cranky said loudly, impatience dripping from his tone. Ricky shook his head, wondering if he had been imagining the same man talk in a sing-song voice to the female CEO just few moments ago. Standing, Ginger picked a lightpen and walked to the middle of the conference room to begin the presentation of the intended project. The lights were switched off, casting the large room into a dimly-lit serious atmosphere with the projector being the only source of light. Ginger's loud voice echoed in the room, every attention focused on her British accent. It was well-detailed, and even Ricky who wasn't easily pleased had to admit to himself that she had made adequate preparations. Minutes later, after hands had been clapped to applaud Ginger for the efficiently done presentation and lights restored to the room, it was indicated that it was time for questions. Jade had been flipping through the pages of the document before
It was one emotion he wasn't used to, yet he wallowed in it. Ricky Mears was restless. He felt guilt haunt him like a horrid picture, eating him up till he spent his time wondering how best to apologise without making a fool of himself. As soon as she had left the buildings the day before, the investors themselves felt tired of going to and fro their country, and signed the deal, although drafting it in two different contracts, one merging with Raymonds and another only his corporation. But he intended to convince J.K. to still agree to merge with his corporation, using the redrafting of allocation of shares as a strategy. Problem was, he doubted if she would listen to him if he showed up in her company. If the previous day's event hadn't taken place, he would have been sure she would cast that robotic polite smile at him and politely ask him to get out of his office for the sake of professionalism. But after the previous day, he discovered she had fire in her, one that had virt
Why was he here anyway? She wondered again, suddenly conscious of the house Somto always kept clean. Had she remembered to clean it today? Had Susan left Esmeralda's toys lying around the house? She waited for him to come into view, holding Esmeralda tightly like a shield against the arrogant man. The child took that as an opportunity to pinch Jade's legs, making her wiggle, but she wasn't about to let her leave her laps- bad timing, Mr. Mears, she muttered to herself. "Ms. Raymonds." Ricky began, sitting down before she could acknowledge his greeting- if that curt mentioning if her name was a greeting anyway. Arrogant man, Jade thought, but she still smiled and replied. "Welcome Mr. Mears, to what do I owe this visit?"Ricky suddenly wanted to take that child from her arms and demand she tells him whom the father was and why she was giving him that programmed robotic smile instead o
Monday the twenty sixth carried with it a promise of a good week, beginning with snow flakes beautifying the streets, to Esmeralda who for the first time didn't complain about Jade's choice of clothes for a cold winter morning, but behaved herself quite well for a five year old.Perhaps it was because Jade had scolded her for what she had done to Ricky the previous weekend, or that she wanted to fully participate in Halloween the next week, but whatever was the reason, Jade was more than happy not to go through minutes of trying to make her shower. She was inwardly grateful to the little girl for unknowingly helping her make it early for the meeting she had by eight. Now, stepping out of the navy blue car and muttering thanks to Luke, her chauffeur who opened and held the car door, she took in a deep breath, staring at the tall buildings which bore the words "Mears Corporation" at the centre.Since she said yes to the merge,
He cleared his throat, controlling his voice from quivering before adding, "Before you came in."He wanted to add something else, to start up a discussion, but he sat in one of the seats instead, reclining into it and looking so sexy Jade felt her lingerie dampen. He rubbed his eyes slowly to clear his tired vision. Focusing them on one place was affecting him now.But an image of Jade was worth every pain."Oh, I see." Jade replied, and walked to the edge of the table to sit, making no attempt to be friendly with him. Couldn't she at least pretend she didn't deem him so insignificant? Ricky wondered, and because he could not bear her sitting beside him and yet being out of reach for him, he blurted out immediately. "How's Esmeralda? Didn't know you had a daughter."Snapping her head up in surprise, she shrugged. "She's okay. Sorry about Friday by the way." She ignored what he had
"So we have signed the deal with the Mears corporation?""No, Anna, we've signed the deal with the Jason corporation." She was making reference to Oliver Jason who had gotten involved with Annabelle in the guise of doing business with Jade. He reminded her of Ricky with his asshole cocky personality. But then, everyone seemed to remind Jade of Ricky these days. All it took was a client or an employee to walk into her office wearing a fitted suit, and she would remember how well Ricky's suit had embraced his body, especially the last time they had seen. It took efforts not to think of him, and since she'd found out that the only thing that completely removed her mind from him was work.Well, not completely. She had been going through a document in her study the night before, and suddenly remembered him, his confident smirk and that lingering cologne of his that had refused to leave her senses. He raided her tho
