Chapter 5

Author: Dayless Reverie
With the five million, the arrangements for Dad's funeral went smoothly. I chose a south-facing plot on the hill, the kind of spot he always loved, with a view that stretched across the whole city.

The day of the cremation was overcast. I did not notify any relatives or friends. After the Holts went bankrupt, every person who once clamored to be close to us disappeared overnight, afraid of being tainted by association.

I carried the urn alone through the empty cemetery. The wind was strong enough to make my eyes sting.

My phone vibrated relentlessly in my pocket. It was Simone.

I did not want to answer, but she kept calling over and over until I finally gave in.

"Spencer! Where the hell were you?" Deafening music and the clink of glasses poured through the speaker.

"There was an important business reception tonight. Get over here. Now."

"I could not." I was looking at Dad's name on the headstone. My voice was barely above a whisper.

"Could not? What could you possibly have going on? All you did was sit around the house like a freeloader." Simone laughed coldly.

"Do not think I could not tell you were throwing a tantrum. This was about the ring, was it not? Behave tonight, keep Mr. Drake happy, and I would buy you an even better one.

"Oh, and Dylan was here. He did not know business etiquette, so come show him the ropes and take a few drinks for him while you were at it."

She wanted me there to drink so her other man would not have to. This was the woman I loved for seven years.

"I was not coming."

I hung up and turned off my phone. The world finally went quiet.

I sat in front of the headstone for the rest of the afternoon and did not leave until the sky had gone completely dark and the cemetery groundskeeper told me it was time to go.

It was late by the time I got back to the villa. Every light in the living room was on. Simone sat on the couch, reeking of alcohol, her eyes dark and dangerous.

Dylan crouched on the floor, working her heels off. Dried tear tracks still marked his face.

The moment I walked through the door, Simone grabbed the ashtray off the coffee table and hurled it at me. It grazed the side of my forehead and smashed against the wall, spraying glass in every direction.

A fragment sliced across my brow, and warm blood ran down into my eye until everything turned red.

"Spencer! You had some nerve. Hanging up on me? Turning off your phone?"

She lurched to her feet and grabbed me by the collar. "Did you have any idea how important tonight was? Because you were not there, Mr. Drake was offended. If this deal fell through, how were you going to make up for it?"

I let her shake me, limp and hollow, with nothing left inside.

"Say something! Stop playing mute!"

She looked at the blood on my face and hesitated, as though she had not expected to actually hurt me. The flicker of guilt was gone almost before it appeared, swallowed whole by her anger.

"You were going to stand here and play the victim over a scratch? Dylan covered for you tonight and drank until his stomach gave out. You were this family's son-in-law. That should have been your job."

Dylan leaned against the couch with a hand pressed to his stomach, looking drained. "Simone, do not blame Spencer. Maybe he really did have something urgent."

"What could he possibly have that was urgent?" Simone sneered. "I bet he was out with some woman. Took that five million from the ring and blew it on some girl, did you not?"

She reached for my pockets. "Where was the money? Hand over whatever was left!"

I clamped my hands over my pockets and held on. Inside were the receipt for the burial plot and Dad's death certificate.

"Let go!"

"No!"

In the struggle, a thin slip of paper came loose and drifted to the floor. It landed right beside Simone's foot.

The air in the room seemed to freeze.

It was the cremation certificate from the funeral home. The bold black print stood out harsh and unmistakable under the chandelier.

"Name of the deceased: Gordon Holt.

"Date of cremation: October 15, 2025."

That was today.

Simone went completely still.

I saw Simone again on an afternoon two years later.Clara and I fed pigeons in the square. She was five months pregnant, wearing a loose maternity dress, eating ice cream and laughing without a care. I crouched in front of her, tying her shoes."Slow down with that. You would upset your stomach."I looked up and pressed a quick kiss to her knuckles. That was when I felt someone watching me. I looked up and saw Simone standing by the fountain. Two years aged her considerably. Gray crept into her temples. She was thin, wearing an ordinary gray trench coat, a folded newspaper in her hand. She stood perfectly still, looking at me, at Clara's belly, at the way I held Clara close. The last light in her eyes went out.Her lips parted as if to call my name. When she saw me help Clara to her feet, wrap my arm around her waist, and press a kiss to her forehead, something in her seemed to collapse. She stumbled backward, nearly colliding with a tourist behind her.I looked at her calmly,

The moment the plane lifted off, I watched the city shrink beneath me and said goodbye in silence.I went to Valloria. It was home to the art academy I always admired, and to the Renaissance that Dad spent his whole life dreaming of seeing.I used what was left of my savings to rent a small apartment with a loft, picked up a brush again, and enrolled in an architectural design program. The days passed slowly and quietly. Nobody knew Spencer Holt. Nobody knew I was the discarded husband of a ruined family with a dead father. Here, I was just Wind.I met Clara Winslow in the academy library during my first winter. She was a woman of quiet warmth, a year ahead of me in the program. The day we met, I could not reach a book on the top shelf, and she brought over a stepladder for me."That copy of 'The Beauty of Light and Shadow' was hard to find. You were a Monet fan too?"Her voice was soft, and she carried a faint scent of orange blossom. Nothing like the aggressive trace of tobacc

After that night, I quit the convenience store and began processing my paperwork to leave the country. I wanted to start over somewhere with no Simone and no past. The day before my flight, a piece of news tore through the city's social circles.I was packing when my phone exploded with messages. A buddy sent me a news screenshot. "This was karma. What went around came around."The headline read, "Wealthy Woman's Kept Man Steals Cash and Flees, Beaten to Death in Violent Confrontation."The photo had been blurred out, but I recognized the body curled in a pool of blood immediately. It was Dylan. After Simone threw him out of the villa, he did not leave the city. He was too accustomed to spending freely to survive on anything less. It did not take him long to find his next mark. With that pitiful face of his, he latched onto a woman at a nightclub, a recently returned heiress named Jolene Marsh.Jolene was known for her wild lifestyle, her explosive temper, and a serious streak o

I looked at the farce playing out in front of me and felt nothing but exhaustion."Simone, you were pathetic." I shook my head."You thought getting rid of Dylan was going to turn back the clock? He was never the problem between us. You were. It was your selfishness, your arrogance, your cruelty."Dylan was just the knife you used to cut me. Now that you threw the knife away, did that change the fact that you were the one who held it?"Simone opened her mouth but could not find a single word.I took hold of my suitcase and looked around the house one last time. I lived here for three years. This place once held every fantasy I ever had about love. Now there was nothing left but wreckage."The divorce was already in litigation. Goodbye, Simone." I paused at the threshold."I hoped we never saw each other again, not in this life or any other."The front door opened slowly. Morning sunlight spilled inside, sharp and blinding. I walked into the light without looking back.Behind m

That night, Simone sat outside my bedroom door until morning. I heard her on the phone the entire time, her voice kept low but unable to hide the fury and regret bleeding through."Why did no one tell me?"Something this serious happened to the Holts and none of you thought to say anything? Were you all useless?"Find out who went to collect that debt. I would destroy every last one of them."It would have been funny if it were not so pathetic. While Dad was alive, she turned a blind eye. She even made things worse. Now that he was dead, she wanted to play the role of the grieving, righteous protector. What was the point? The next morning, I packed my things. There was not much to pack as very little in this house ever truly belonged to me. All I had were a few changes of clothes and Dad's urn.The designer watches and couture suits Simone bought me over the years, I left hanging in the closet. If I was going to make a clean break, I was going to make it complete. When I came d

Simone looked down at the paper by her feet, brow furrowed, as if the words on it were written in a language she did not understand. After a few seconds, she bent down and picked it up. The paper trembled in her hand."What was this?" Her voice sounded unsteady."Gordon Holt... cremation..."She read the words aloud, then snapped her head up to look at me, her eyes filled with disbelief."Spencer, you made up a story about your own father dying just to get out of a reception? Just because you did not want to deal with Dylan? Had you lost your mind? You thought this was something you could joke about?"She slapped the paper across my face."If you were going to forge something, at least make it convincing. I sent people to the company to collect just a few days ago and he was fine. How could he be dead all of a sudden?"Did you really think a fake certificate would make me go soft? That I would write off the Holt family's debt? Spencer, you disgusted me."The paper drifted to th
