Chapter 4

Author: Bamboo Reed
If he was going to take such a big risk for Elena, I was not going to stick my neck out any longer.

Liam made a cut, and something went terribly wrong. The patient's healthy right lung was removed. Blood started gushing from where the lung had been, and I squinted, trying to figure out what had happened. I thought Liam must have been so nervous that he had accidentally cut a major artery.

Liam was freaking out. He yelled, "Elena, stop the bleeding, quick!"

The blood had already drenched the whole surgery bed. Elena let out a loud scream. Instead of grabbing something to stop the bleeding, she leaned in and started blowing on the wound.

"I'll blow on it to make it feel better," she said.

Liam's mouth fell open in shock. He pulled her back and quickly worked to stop the bleeding.

"Liam, did I do something wrong? When you got hurt and were bleeding, blowing on it made it better, right?" Elena's eyes filled with tears. She felt so upset.

In the monitoring room, the patient's family was furious.

"This is ridiculous! Who stops bleeding by blowing on it?!"

"Now that the surgery's done, send the tissue out to get it checked, quickly!"

I passed on what the family said, and Liam finally got the bleeding under control.

However, when they talked about sending the tissue for testing, Liam realized there was no disease noticeable on the lung at all.

"How can this be..." he muttered.

He looked at me with suspicion. "Did you mess with something?!"

I just smiled. "I didn't even touch the surgery. What could I have messed with?

"Maybe you should think about how you're going to explain this to the family outside."

Liam was shaking. He flipped the lung over, clenched his teeth, and said, "Nobody says anything about this, got it?!

"I'll just tell them both lungs were bad. The family won't know.

"Elena, you stitch up the patient."

I walked out of the surgery room with him.

"The surgery went great, so don't worry! Your dad is totally fine!"

As Liam assured them with confidence, I chimed in lightly, "Absolutely. It’s all thanks to Mr. Chapman. Without him, the right lung surgery would've been a disaster!"

The family member, who had been grateful a moment ago, suddenly became upset.

"What are you talking about?! Right lung surgery?! My grandpa was supposed to have his left lung operated on!

"I guess your hospital is looking to get itself shut down, huh? And you probably don't want to be the head doctor anymore!"

Liam, frightened by the confrontation, started sweating and kept apologizing, "I messed up! I thought the patient's right lung had problems too..."

"That's not true! My grandpa's had lots of tests, and his right lung is fine!"

When Liam realized arguing was useless, he braced himself and made a desperate promise, "We can put the lung back! Don't worry, I'll make sure your dad is okay after the surgery!"

The family member was furious but felt powerless.

Just as Liam was about to head back to the surgery room, suddenly, a beeping alarm sounded from inside.

The patient looked pale, and his heartbeat had stopped.

Elena stood to the side, her hands shaking with guilt.

Liam could not hold back his anger any longer and confronted her, "Elena! What did you do this time?!"

Elena, trembling, spoke up. Her words shocked everyone.

I called for a quick meeting and, using what I remembered from before, I made a new plan for Sir Hoffman's surgery. In my previous life, it was Elena who got upset when I changed the surgery plan.Liam, wanting to get back at me, abandoned the scalpel and made me perform the surgery all by myself. Therefore, I knew about Sir Hoffman's illness better than anyone."Sir Hoffman's right lung was taken out. Now, we need to make sure we only remove the sick part of the left lung and keep the healthy part."I think we can carefully remove the sick tissue!"In the meeting room, all the other doctors agreed with my plan.Sir Hoffman was rushed into the surgery room. Before I picked up the scalpel, I breathed in deeply. This time, I was going to change my destiny!I followed the surgery plan, and after three hours, I had successfully removed Sir Hoffman's sick tissue. We saved as much of the healthy lung as we could."We did it! Dr. Hawkins, you're incredible!""Go tell his family th

"Liam, your heart is so cold!"The police officer could tell Liam was feeling guilty and moved in to look for evidence."Please hand over your phone for a routine check."Liam kept his phone in his pocket and would not give it up."Officer, she's lost her mind. How can you listen to all the crazy stuff she’s saying?"There's nothing wrong with my phone, you have to believe me!"When Liam would not cooperate, the officer pressed him down and made him give up the phone. The tech people checked, which soon showed that everything I said was true.Liam's messages were all about working with the hospital director to make accidents happen and get money from the insurance. The evidence was solid, and they arrested the hospital director too.I felt a huge wave of relief. In my previous life, I found out after I was sent to jail that Liam was the one who hurt our baby."Claire, you silly girl, you probably don't even know, right? You can't have kids because of me!"I put something i

I put my phone away and grabbed her hand tightly. Then, after a quick slap, I said, "This is for Sir Hoffman! You don't have any respect or what it takes to be a doctor. You shouldn't be in a hospital. I've called the cops and they'll make sure you get what you deserve!" Twenty minutes later, the police showed up. James spoke with them for a while and told them who the patient was. After they finished up their work, they took Elena away.Watching Elena being led away, Liam let out a big sigh of relief and felt lucky, "Claire, we're so lucky you found out what she was up to or Elena would have really messed things up for us today!"I told her a million times not to do something so terrible, but she just didn't care!"Poor Sir Hoffman had to go through all this trouble." Liam sounded so heartfelt it was almost convincing. I stared at him and asked, "Are you really telling me you're not to blame?"Didn't everyone see the messages? I told Elena not to do it, but she didn't listen t

Elena's face went white, and she started to stammer as she made frantic excuses."I was just helping Liam out, I wasn't the one doing the surgery. What's this got to do with me?"You shouldn't be after me, you should be after—"I was bracing myself for a real showdown. However, then, out of nowhere, Elena ducked behind Liam and pointed right at me, "It's Claire! She could've done the surgery, but she just stood there, not helping. She left the patient there to die!"And when the patient started bleeding a lot, she didn't even try to help. It's all her fault!"If you're going to arrest someone, take her! She's the one, not me!"After Elena pointed the finger at me, Liam, who had been out of it, suddenly piped up and accused me too, "Yeah! It's all Claire's fault!"She kept telling me to look at where the problem was during the surgery. She knew the plan was wrong from the start."She must've messed with something. We got dragged into this mess because of her!"I almost laughed

"What do you mean you threw it away?! Where?!" he shouted, "You heard it was a good organ, so why on earth would you throw it out?!"He started rummaging through the trash, but it was too late. The lung was no good anymore.Liam was at his wit's end, desperate to make a call for a lung transplant for the patient. However, to his surprise, the patient's family had already stormed the hospital director's office. "We saw everything that happened in the operating room! Now, get someone to treat my grandpa and get him out!" they demanded. "Your doctors have no ethics and are playing with people’s lives. If my grandpa remains under their care, he might not make it through the day!" The uproar from the upset family grew louder, forcing the director to step into the operating room and send Liam out to deal with the situation. The moment Liam left the operating room, a family member slapped him. "Do you have any idea who my grandpa is? He's a war hero from '43!" the family member yelled,

"I saw that his lips were dry, so I thought I'd moisten them a bit, and I pulled out the thing in his mouth."Hearing that, Liam's eyes grew wide with anger, and he could barely get the words out."Elena! How could you be so careless? That was connected to the ventilator!"When a patient is under anesthesia, they can't breathe by themselves. Taking out the breathing tube can be deadly!"Liam dashed to the operating table and started giving the patient CPR. Elena was right behind him, tears streaming down her face. "Liam, why are you so mean to me? The doctor was here for the last surgery, and you just left. No one told me I couldn't do these things!"Do you have any idea how scared I was to step up to that operating table? I almost fainted at the sight of blood, and instead of comforting me, you yelled at me!"If calling Elena's earlier actions foolish was an understatement, then unplugging the patient's breathing tube was downright senseless. I even started to wonder if she di
