Chapter 6

Author: Evelyn
Zack had not set foot in the house for a week, yet his escapades with Nancy played out before my eyes daily. Their adventures to Golden Palm Springs, their ascent of snow-capped peaks, their shared moments under the Northwood auroras—all broadcasted for the world to see.

I watched, a silent spectator, then scrolled on. Those moments, once mine alone, were then shared with another Omega.

However, I had not wasted my days wallowing. The house was cluttered with the past, and it took days to sort and box up my life.

Once done, I sought refuge with my parents' pack, announcing my departure. They were shocked, to say the least.

"You're leaving? But you two are set to bond! And you're heading to the Northwood herbal research station? That's years of seclusion, years apart from him," my mother said, her hands gripping mine, eyes brimming with concern.

"Maggie, please reconsider. You've chased after him for years, and you've finally got him to commit to tying the knot... What if he backs out? What then? How will you handle the wedding?"

I got where they were coming from.

They had all witnessed my love for Zack. They had tried to talk me out of it before I convinced him to get engaged.

They said as long as Zack was in my life, I would never find my true self. I would be living in Zack's shadow.

They were upset that Zack had taken credit for my research.

Back then, I was so sure, promising that with time, I would win him over and let my own talents shine.

Now, I just said it quietly.

"This time, I'm the one calling off the wedding."

Silence fell over the room.

I did not bring up Nancy or the report confirming her pregnancy.

I simply said I wanted to head to Northwood to dive back into my herbal research and do something meaningful for our pack.

My parents exchanged a long look before Dad let out a sigh and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat.

"Just make sure it's what you want, no regrets."

Back at my place, I called my best friend Irene over to help pack up the mountains of boxes into the car my family had sent over.

After a few trips, the house was finally empty.

Leaning against the doorway, Irene was out of breath, her eyes distant.

"Remember how you cried tears of joy in my arms the night Zack said 'yes' to your proposal? You were ecstatic, thinking you'd finally be his Luna."

I just nodded, a quiet hum.

"And now? You're just going to throw away the engagement you worked so hard for?

"You've loved him for years. What in the world happened?"

Staring at the bare room, I suddenly felt the urge to spill everything.

I told her all about the past month.

Including Zack's decision to honor Nancy's request and father her child as a way to repay a favor.

Irene's reaction was immediate and fierce.

"Has Zack lost his mind? After everything you've done for him, he goes off to father a child with another Omega and expects you to be okay with it?!"

I shook my head, unable to hold back the tears.

"He claims Nancy saved his life, and he owes it to her to grant her dying wish."

Irene's eyes blazed with fury.

"However, you saved him too, in the silver mine! Remember how you risked your life to get that blood-stopping herb for him? Your hands were full of puncture wounds from those toxic thorns. How can he just forget that?"

I stayed silent.

Perhaps... he simply did not love me as much.

No big deal, though.

I was leaving this place, after all.

Locked away in my experiment, I was oblivious to the drama unfolding. After two years of relentless work, I finally succeeded.Stepping out of the lab, I let out a long, relieved breath. The professor came over, beaming with pride, and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat."Excellent work. You're truly my star pupil."I was about to respond with a grin when I spotted someone lurking nearby.Zack.How on earth did he know to find me there? At that moment, my phone, which I had just gotten back, started buzzing like crazy.I glanced at the screen—it was flooded with messages from Irene.[Maggie, I've gotten your revenge!]'Revenge'? I blinked, puzzled. As I kept reading, it all became clear.Zack had been searching for me and stumbled upon the truth, leading him to confront Nancy.Nancy, backed by her band of rogue wolves, clashed with Zack. Both were left wounded in the aftermath.Nancy lost her unborn pup. She, the one truly afflicted with Argentosis, passed away that sprin

"Nancy, what are you doing?"Irene shoved Nancy aside. However, Nancy just smirked. "Come out, come out, wherever you are."She clapped her hands mockingly.A menacing figure, a rogue wolf, stepped out from the shadows behind the door.Zack's eyes went wide. "You!""Zack, how dare you destroy what's mine?"Nancy's taunting eyes bore into the ragged Alpha before her."That baby isn't even yours!"Zack was too drained to utter another word.He glared at Nancy, his eyes burning with helpless anger. It all made sense then. After a single night with Nancy, she claimed to be pregnant! The rogue wolf laughed as he approached, delivering a brutal kick to Zack's side."Worthless!"I could've ended you before, and I can do it again!"He pinned Zack's head under his boot, grinding it down."Crushing an Alpha beneath my feet feels fantastic!"However, Zack's thoughts were elsewhere, on Maggie alone. For five years, Maggie had shielded him from every slight. She even sacrificed he

"No, it was me!" Nancy's voice trembled with urgency. "Zack, how could you doubt me? I..."She inched closer to him. However, he recoiled from her touch, his face twisted with revulsion."Nancy, I've uncovered the truth."Zack's eyes were bloodshot. "Maggie saved me, not you."He cast a disdainful glance at Nancy from above. "Get rid of the baby."In that instant, Nancy's world shattered."No, that can't happen! It just can't! I—"She was cut off mid-sentence by the shrill ring of Zack's phone.Hope flickered in Zack's eyes as he snatched up the device, but it was quickly extinguished."What's going on?"The voice on the other end was frantic. "Zack, when are you coming back?"Ms. Blake is gone, and our experiment's been on hold too long. If we wait any longer, we'll be broke!"Zack's posture slumped."So the experiment's stuck without Maggie? What have you been up to?"There was a pause before the reply came."The core data of the experiment has always been for your an

Irene was stunned that Zack had forgotten something so significant. She stared down at the Alpha contemptuously, feeling a surge of injustice for Maggie."You've forgotten the major incident from the Winter Festival six years ago, just like that?"I'm genuinely curious. Maggie was injured by a silver mine while getting a blood-stopping herb for you. She was out of commission for a month, and you've forgotten?"It took her hand six months to heal before she could get back to her experiments!"And what about Nancy? What did she do to earn such devotion from you?"Irene laid it all out, every detail from the past years. She even pulled up the photo on her phone, the one of her, wrapped in blood-soaked bandages from that time. The instant Zack saw the photo, he let out a roar of agony. Then, almost immediately, he coughed up blood. In his mind, it had always been Nancy who had saved him on that cold winter night six years ago.How could it have been Maggie? If what Irene said w

Zack was left in a daze after the call ended."Did Maggie just hang up on me?"The male voice he had overheard echoed in his mind."Did she... cheat on me?"The thought spurred him to try calling again, but this time, the call did not go through.A sinking feeling hit him.Had Maggie... blocked his number? She had been mad before, but never like this.Panic mixed with anger as he recalled the countless times he had tried to explain.Nancy was an Omega with a terminal case of Argentosis. She had once saved Zack's life, and then, as she faced her final days, her only wish was to continue her lineage. Zack had agreed to father her child, a simple act of repaying a life-saving favor. However, Maggie just could not grasp it. The anger had subsided, and Zack was seized by a wave of panic. The thought of a life without Maggie was unbearable. He missed her caring nature, but even more, he missed her brilliant mind and her research skills. Without her, what would become of his ex

The pain inside Zack roared to life, a fierce agony that would not be tamed. The nagging suspicion he had been trying to ignore was then painfully clear.Maggie truly had walked away from their bond! Why? She loved him so deeply. How could she just let go?"What was Maggie trying to tell me yesterday?"Zack was plagued with questions. She had been eerily calm, showing no excitement for the Bonding Ceremony, no anger toward him.She was like a lifeless pond. That was when he realized she was already saying her goodbyes.Zack's heart ached, and the wolf within him recoiled in distress. He tried to reach out through their mark, but..."The temporary mark… is it gone?"That thought crushed him completely. His phone was blowing up with calls from family, friends, and Nancy.Even then, he could not bring himself to look. One question haunted him:Why did Maggie cut all ties? She had told the Elders about her decision half a month ago...Wait. Half a month ago?!That was wh
