Chapter 3

作者: Evelyn
That night, Zack did not come home. I, on the other hand, did not bother asking where he had been.

Asking was pointless anyway.

Nancy had already flaunted the pictures all over social media.

Zack had gone back with Nancy to her pack. Her grandmother was grinning as she held Zack's hand.

His other hand rested on Nancy's belly, his eyes brimming with deep affection.

I could barely look at the photo.

For five years, Zack had given me that same loving gaze time and again.

I had reveled in every moment.

It was only at this moment that I came to understand the love I thought was mine could just as easily belong to someone else.

"Zack, do you ever feel guilty?"

My tears blurred the image of Zack's smiling face on my phone screen, and the words just spilled out of me.

In all our five years together, Zack had met my family just once. He had claimed he was not comfortable around older folks, that it made him feel stiff.

However, he did not smile, not even once, during that visit.

I inhaled sharply, frustration boiling over, and chucked my phone onto the bed.

The truth hit me hard: It was not about his discomfort with elders at all. He simply did not want anything to do with my family.

The following day, I met up with my friends to break the news about the Bonding Ceremony being called off.

All the while, the wolf inside me was pacing and growling with restless anxiety.

I clutched at my chest, feeling sick, my face ghostly pale.

The truth was, Zack had never wanted the Bonding Ceremony. I had to beg him to even consider it.

My friends were in shock when I told them.

"After all the trouble to get Zack on board with the Bonding Ceremony, why cancel it now?"

"You're so in love with him. How can you stand to leave?"

I could only offer a wry smile in response.

Let him go? Impossible.

'Years of love aren't easily cast aside,' I thought bitterly.

However, that relationship... it was never mine to demand.

I had tried so hard to be close to him, to be his one and only. Then Nancy came along, and everything shifted.

He gave her all the patience and smiles that used to be mine while he grew distant toward me by the day.

I lied to myself, saying she was his lifesaver, that he was just repaying a debt.

However, when she mentioned wanting a child to remember him by, he did not hesitate.

He had always said he would consider my feelings, but behind my back, he had gone ahead with the Breeding Ceremony.

In that moment, it was crystal clear: Zack and I were over.

Sometimes, the hardest thing was walking away, even when it tore me apart. Still, I had to do it.

I kept my reasons to myself.

All I told anyone was that I was heading to Northwood to dive into herbal research, and I would not be easy to reach for a few years.

After a night out with friends that stretched into the wee hours, I stumbled home to find Zack, fresh from his own late return.

He caught a whiff of my night out, his expression darkening as he recoiled.

However, then, as if a thought struck him, he composed himself and pulled me into a hug. "My dearest Maggie, hitting the bottle."

His eyes shone with affection as he grinned and caressed my forehead.

"Not exactly the behavior of a good Omega, leaving your Alpha to drink the night away."

Zack's attempt at humor fell flat, and I just stood there, mute.

Once, that look in his eyes would have had me spellbound. Now, it just made my stomach turn.

"Maggie, make me a promise, will you? Once we're bonded, no more booze." Zack laid it on thick, playing the part of the concerned fiance.

"Omegas are delicate, you know? Too much drink is rough on your inner wolf."

He deserved an Oscar for that act. If I had not known better, I might have fallen for it.

I let out an icy laugh and shoved him away. "Why don't you hit the showers? You reek of some other Omega."

"Nancy, what are you doing?"Irene shoved Nancy aside. However, Nancy just smirked. "Come out, come out, wherever you are."She clapped her hands mockingly.A menacing figure, a rogue wolf, stepped out from the shadows behind the door.Zack's eyes went wide. "You!""Zack, how dare you destroy what's mine?"Nancy's taunting eyes bore into the ragged Alpha before her."That baby isn't even yours!"Zack was too drained to utter another word.He glared at Nancy, his eyes burning with helpless anger. It all made sense then. After a single night with Nancy, she claimed to be pregnant! The rogue wolf laughed as he approached, delivering a brutal kick to Zack's side."Worthless!"I could've ended you before, and I can do it again!"He pinned Zack's head under his boot, grinding it down."Crushing an Alpha beneath my feet feels fantastic!"However, Zack's thoughts were elsewhere, on Maggie alone. For five years, Maggie had shielded him from every slight. "No, it was me!" Nancy's voice trembled with urgency. "Zack, how could you doubt me? I..."She inched closer to him. However, he recoiled from her touch, his face twisted with revulsion."Nancy, I've uncovered the truth."Zack's eyes were bloodshot. "Maggie saved me, not you."He cast a disdainful glance at Nancy from above. "Get rid of the baby."In that instant, Nancy's world shattered."No, that can't happen! It just can't! I—"She was cut off mid-sentence by the shrill ring of Zack's phone.Hope flickered in Zack's eyes as he snatched up the device, but it was quickly extinguished."What's going on?"The voice on the other end was frantic. "Zack, when are you coming back?"Ms. Blake is gone, and our experiment's been on hold too long. If we wait any longer, we'll be broke!"Zack's posture slumped."So the experiment's stuck without Maggie? What have you been up to?"There was a pause before the reply came."The core data of the experiment has always been for your an

Irene was stunned that Zack had forgotten something so significant. She stared down at the Alpha contemptuously, feeling a surge of injustice for Maggie."You've forgotten the major incident from the Winter Festival six years ago, just like that?"I'm genuinely curious. Maggie was injured by a silver mine while getting a blood-stopping herb for you. She was out of commission for a month, and you've forgotten?"It took her hand six months to heal before she could get back to her experiments!"And what about Nancy? What did she do to earn such devotion from you?"Irene laid it all out, every detail from the past years. She even pulled up the photo on her phone, the one of her, wrapped in blood-soaked bandages from that time. The instant Zack saw the photo, he let out a roar of agony. Then, almost immediately, he coughed up blood. In his mind, it had always been Nancy who had saved him on that cold winter night six years ago.How could it have been Maggie? If what Irene said w

Zack was left in a daze after the call ended."Did Maggie just hang up on me?"The male voice he had overheard echoed in his mind."Did she... cheat on me?"The thought spurred him to try calling again, but this time, the call did not go through.A sinking feeling hit him.Had Maggie... blocked his number? She had been mad before, but never like this.Panic mixed with anger as he recalled the countless times he had tried to explain.Nancy was an Omega with a terminal case of Argentosis. She had once saved Zack's life, and then, as she faced her final days, her only wish was to continue her lineage. Zack had agreed to father her child, a simple act of repaying a life-saving favor. However, Maggie just could not grasp it. The anger had subsided, and Zack was seized by a wave of panic. The thought of a life without Maggie was unbearable. He missed her caring nature, but even more, he missed her brilliant mind and her research skills. Without her, what would become of his ex

She loved him so deeply. How could she just let go?"What was Maggie trying to tell me yesterday?"Zack was plagued with questions. She had been eerily calm, showing no excitement for the Bonding Ceremony, no anger toward him.She was like a lifeless pond. That was when he realized she was already saying her goodbyes.Zack's heart ached, and the wolf within him recoiled in distress. He tried to reach out through their mark, but..."The temporary mark… is it gone?"That thought crushed him completely. His phone was blowing up with calls from family, friends, and Nancy.Even then, he could not bring himself to look. One question haunted him:Why did Maggie cut all ties? She had told the Elders about her decision half a month ago...Wait.
