Chapter 2

Author: Another Spring
Dad caught Mom’s wrist just inches before her hand struck my face.

“Why are you hitting her?

“Isn’t it a good thing that she’s still alive?”

Mom yanked her arm free, her eyes turning red.

“Then what about Lana? She’s the younger sister. Was she supposed to spend those three years giving up everything for Cece?”

Lana burst into tears and hurled the lollipop at me.

“I hate Cece! Why won’t she just die?”

“Don’t cry, Lana. It’s okay.”

Mom pulled her into her arms, growing angrier by the second.

After unwrapping the lollipop and putting it back in Lana’s mouth, she turned and walked toward me.

Slap!

Her palm struck my face.

My ears immediately began ringing.

“You little liar!”

Mom glared at me with pure hatred.

I wanted to explain.

Over those three years, I’d offered more than once to share my toys with Lana.

I’d asked my parents to bring her to the amusement park with us and buy her a pretty dress too.

But Mom and Dad always said the same thing.

“You don’t need to worry about your sister. We’ll make it up to her later.

“All you need to do is enjoy the three years you have left.”

Still, part of me felt that it really was my fault.

The number above my head had caused all of this.

I curled up in the corner of the bed, covering my burning cheek as tears rolled down my face.

Mom snorted.

“Stop pretending to be the victim.”

She carried Lana out of the room.

Dad followed them, slamming the door behind him.

“Cecilia, think carefully about what you’ve done. Tomorrow, you’re going to apologize to your mother and sister!”

Early the next morning, several workers arrived and began carrying things out of my bedroom.

My family sat on the couch, with Mom holding Lana close. Her eyes were still swollen from crying.

“Cecilia, come here.

“Starting today, all the clothes we bought you over the past three years are being thrown away. Your toys and books will be moved into your sister’s room.

“And she’ll be getting your princess bed too.”

I kept my head down.

“Okay.”

“This is your punishment for lying!”

“I didn’t lie.”

Mom froze halfway to her feet, then raised her voice.

“What did you just say, Cecilia?”

“I said I didn’t lie.”

I pointed at my reflection in the mirror.

“The number above my head is still changing. It changed again today.”

Mom let out an angry laugh.

“You still refuse to admit it?

“Fine. Tell me, then. What number do you see today?”

I stared seriously at the bright red number above my head.

“Negative three.”

Dad’s expression faltered.

Mom grabbed my shirt and dragged me to the bedroom door.

“You used these lies to trick us into buying you all this, and you’re still doing it?

“Fine! I’ll have them clear out this entire room and turn it into a piano room for your sister!”

Dad tried to stop her.

“If you take away her room, where is Cece supposed to sleep?”

“I don’t care! She can sleep on the balcony, on the floor, or out on the street!

“I just want her to stay away from my daughter!”

Mom screamed with red-rimmed eyes, shielding Lana like a mother wolf protecting her cub.

Dad tried to calm her down again.

Mom shoved her phone in front of him.

“You think I’m accusing her without proof?

“Look for yourself!”

Dad picked up the phone.

The moment he saw what was on the screen, his face changed.

“Cecilia, is this true?”

Rain pattered against the headstone, and the cold wind made everyone shiver. The funeral was attended by relatives and neighbors who had known our family for years. They kept their heads bowed, sighing quietly as they took turns stepping forward to leave a single white daisy. They offered my parents words of comfort, believing my death had been a tragic accident no one could’ve predicted.Grandma Mary and Auntie Susie stood off to one side beneath an umbrella, sobbing uncontrollably.Dad stood at the front holding my memorial portrait.Sleepless nights had left his eyes bloodshot and his face haggard.“Cece, Daddy failed you.“I should’ve believed you.”Seeing him in so much pain made my own heart ache.I moved closer and tried to wipe the rain and tears from his face. But my hand passed straight through him.I couldn’t even wipe away my father’s tears. All I could do was stay beside him and whisper words only I could hear.“It’s not your fault, Daddy. The moment Mom said those words, Dad’s expression changed.Everyone turned to stare at her.Ever since I’d spoken my first number at five years old, the entire family had assumed that the numbers were counting down to death.Mom slowly lifted her head. She had no tears left, but she forced herself to reveal the truth that shattered everything they believed.“The number above Cece’s head measured how much she was loved.“Everyone has a number of their own. It reflects how deeply the people closest to them truly love them.“It has nothing to do with fate or how long someone is destined to live.“It only reflects what’s in people’s hearts.“That’s what the woman in my dream told me.“But she spoke in riddles, and I didn’t understand her at the time.”Dad thought of the boy next door who had been hit by a car.“Then what happened to that little boy?”“He didn’t die immediately. He was taken to the hospital, and timely treatment could’ve saved him.“But his parents had neglect

The family photo had been taken on my birthday three years ago.It was the same day I first saw the number 1,095 above my head.Grandma Mary leaned closer, and her expression gradually softened.Everyone in the picture was smiling.I stood in the center wearing a birthday crown, holding up two fingers in a peace sign. There was even a dab of frosting on the tip of my nose. The rest of the family slowly gathered around the album, taking turns looking at my familiar smiling face.A mix of grief and regret settled over them.Dad examined the photo several times but couldn’t find anything unusual.Instead, it brought back memories of happier times.Grandma Mary’s eyes reddened again. With a quiet sigh, she ran a trembling finger over my cheek in the photograph.“My sweet little Cece is really gone.”Aunt Susie stood beside her, fighting back tears.Everyone was lost in grief over how much had changed.Grandma Mary turned to Mom and tried once more to comfort her.“Cece was h

Every number she saw was real.”He couldn’t understand why Mom had suddenly changed her mind. But no matter how many times he asked, she remained lost in a daze. She only repeated one sentence.“She wasn’t supposed to die.”For the next several days, that was her response to everything Dad said. She repeated it over and over without a trace of emotion. There was no sadness in her voice. No anger either. She said it as though she were simply stating a fact.Somehow, that was more painful than any amount of crying. The atmosphere in the house grew heavier by the day.A

While Mom and Dad spent twenty days at the beach, I remained locked inside the bathroom. When I was thirsty, I drank water from the faucet. When I was cold, I curled up in a corner and wrapped my arms around myself for warmth. That was how they found me.My body lay motionless on the bathroom floor, still curled into a ball.Beneath my clothes, my frozen skin had turned bluish purple. My small face was deathly pale.Mom’s legs gave out.She stumbled toward me and reached out with a trembling hand. The instant her fingertips touched my skin, her blood ran cold.“Cece, wake up.“Mommy and Daddy are home.”Her voice shook uncontrollably. She carefully gathered my cold body into her arms and held me against her, desperately trying to warm me with her own body. But I didn’t respond.Dad stood behind her, his face drained of color. All the strength left his body. His mind went blank, and all he could hear were Mom’s frantic sobs and desperate pleas.“Cece, please.
