Chapter 3

Author: Another Spring
The phone showed every update I’d posted for the 1,095-day wish-list challenge.

“Mom bought me new shoes today. Checked off.”

“Mom and Dad took me to Disneyland. Checked off.”

“Aunt Susie gave me a huge cash gift just for me. Checked off.”

Dad looked at me with more than anger now.

He was utterly disappointed in me.

Mom continued fueling his anger.

“She posted all of this online to show off. She lied about dying so we’d feel sorry for her and give her whatever she wanted.

“She’s so young, yet she can lie without even blinking. And she’s this vain already.”

I shook my head and hurried over to explain.

“That’s not true.

“The man running the challenge said that if I posted for 1,095 days, I could win a beach vacation for three people.

“I wanted to surprise you, Dad, and Lana.”

“Stop mentioning that number!”

Mom shoved me away.

“You said you’d die after 1,095 days. So why aren’t you dead?”

I stumbled and landed hard on the floor.

The fall hurt.

But her words hurt far more.

Dad came toward me.

I looked up at him.

“Daddy, I really didn’t lie.”

He refused to listen to another word.

His patience snapped, and he picked me up and carried me toward the back of the house.

“You want to go play in the water?

“Fine. I’ll let you play as long as you want!”

No matter how hard I struggled or cried, he didn’t stop.

He carried me into the bathroom and threw me into the bathtub.

The freezing water cut straight through me.

I thrashed around before managing to stand.

“Daddy, I’m sorry. But I really wasn’t lying.”

Dad stood in the bathroom doorway and gave a cold laugh.

“Fine. Then tell me what those numbers actually mean.”

I froze.

I didn’t know how to answer.

The last trace of hope disappeared from his face.

He turned away and shut the door.

“Your mother was right, Cecilia. We trusted you too much.”

I stood there, staring blankly at the number above my head.

The moment Dad spoke, it changed again.

Only this time, it wasn’t a number.

It was a line of words.

I read them one by one.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

I pounded on the door.

“Mom! Dad! I know what the numbers mean now!”

A lock clicked on the other side.

Lana slowly climbed down from the stool and copied Mom’s tone.

“Cece is a liar!”

“Mommy and Daddy said they never want to see you again! Neither do I!”

Then she deliberately raised her voice to drown me out.

“Mommy, Daddy, I really want to go to the beach too.”

Mom picked her up, her voice unbelievably gentle.

“Okay. We’ll leave right now.”

Dad immediately booked the tickets and began packing.

“Let’s go. We’ve spent the last three years taking care of that little liar. We haven’t taken Lana anywhere in ages.”

Lana glanced at the bathroom and snuggled deeper into Mom’s arms.

“What about Cece?”

That only made my parents angrier.

“There’s plenty of food and water in the house. She can come out when she gets hungry.

“We’re not going to take care of her forever.”

I stood there drenched, my teeth chattering as the cold seeped into my bones.

“Mom! Dad! I can’t get out!”

“Let’s go. Ignore that little liar!”

The front door slammed shut.

Rain pattered against the headstone, and the cold wind made everyone shiver. The funeral was attended by relatives and neighbors who had known our family for years. They kept their heads bowed, sighing quietly as they took turns stepping forward to leave a single white daisy. They offered my parents words of comfort, believing my death had been a tragic accident no one could’ve predicted.Grandma Mary and Auntie Susie stood off to one side beneath an umbrella, sobbing uncontrollably.Dad stood at the front holding my memorial portrait.Sleepless nights had left his eyes bloodshot and his face haggard.“Cece, Daddy failed you.“I should’ve believed you.”Seeing him in so much pain made my own heart ache.I moved closer and tried to wipe the rain and tears from his face. But my hand passed straight through him.I couldn’t even wipe away my father’s tears. All I could do was stay beside him and whisper words only I could hear.“It’s not your fault, Daddy. Those three happy

The moment Mom said those words, Dad’s expression changed.Everyone turned to stare at her.Ever since I’d spoken my first number at five years old, the entire family had assumed that the numbers were counting down to death.Mom slowly lifted her head. She had no tears left, but she forced herself to reveal the truth that shattered everything they believed.“The number above Cece’s head measured how much she was loved.“Everyone has a number of their own. It reflects how deeply the people closest to them truly love them.“It has nothing to do with fate or how long someone is destined to live.“It only reflects what’s in people’s hearts.“That’s what the woman in my dream told me.“But she spoke in riddles, and I didn’t understand her at the time.”Dad thought of the boy next door who had been hit by a car.“Then what happened to that little boy?”“He didn’t die immediately. He was taken to the hospital, and timely treatment could’ve saved him.“But his parents had neglect

The family photo had been taken on my birthday three years ago.It was the same day I first saw the number 1,095 above my head.Grandma Mary leaned closer, and her expression gradually softened.Everyone in the picture was smiling.I stood in the center wearing a birthday crown, holding up two fingers in a peace sign. There was even a dab of frosting on the tip of my nose. The rest of the family slowly gathered around the album, taking turns looking at my familiar smiling face.A mix of grief and regret settled over them.Dad examined the photo several times but couldn’t find anything unusual.Instead, it brought back memories of happier times.Grandma Mary’s eyes reddened again. With a quiet sigh, she ran a trembling finger over my cheek in the photograph.“My sweet little Cece is really gone.”Aunt Susie stood beside her, fighting back tears.Everyone was lost in grief over how much had changed.Grandma Mary turned to Mom and tried once more to comfort her.“Cece was h

“What do you mean?”Dad’s eyes widened, but Mom didn’t answer. After they signed my death certificate, my ashes were placed in a small urn.Mom and Dad brought me home. The house still looked exactly the same.Yet everything had changed. After setting down my urn, Dad leaned against the wall. His chest felt tight as he thought about what Mom had said in the hospital hallway.“Your sister wasn’t a liar. Every number she saw was real.”He couldn’t understand why Mom had suddenly changed her mind. But no matter how many times he asked, she remained lost in a daze. She only repeated one sentence.“She wasn’t supposed to die.”For the next several days, that was her response to everything Dad said. She repeated it over and over without a trace of emotion. There was no sadness in her voice. No anger either. She said it as though she were simply stating a fact.Somehow, that was more painful than any amount of crying. The atmosphere in the house grew heavier by the day.A

While Mom and Dad spent twenty days at the beach, I remained locked inside the bathroom. When I was thirsty, I drank water from the faucet. When I was cold, I curled up in a corner and wrapped my arms around myself for warmth. That was how they found me.My body lay motionless on the bathroom floor, still curled into a ball.Beneath my clothes, my frozen skin had turned bluish purple. My small face was deathly pale.Mom’s legs gave out.She stumbled toward me and reached out with a trembling hand. The instant her fingertips touched my skin, her blood ran cold.“Cece, wake up.“Mommy and Daddy are home.”Her voice shook uncontrollably. She carefully gathered my cold body into her arms and held me against her, desperately trying to warm me with her own body. But I didn’t respond.Dad stood behind her, his face drained of color. All the strength left his body. His mind went blank, and all he could hear were Mom’s frantic sobs and desperate pleas.“Cece, please.
