Chapter 3

作者: Cloud
I had once seen Cory as the only light guiding me through the darkness. In the end, he was the one who betrayed me the most.

After living together for a month, I found out I was pregnant. As my belly grew bigger, I started hinting more about when we would get married.

Every time, he would gently tell me that the wedding dress wasn't finished yet and that I should wait a little longer. At the same time, he started coming home later and later.

I was six months pregnant when I returned home from a prenatal checkup and found Cory and Alicia in bed. I broke down. Screaming and crying, I rushed over and fought with them, questioning why he had cheated on me.

At that time, he simply shoved me to the floor and sneered. "Without the Grant family, you're nothing but an orphan. You didn't actually think I would marry you, did you? It was just a joke. My wife can only ever be Alicia."

He cruelly threw me out of the villa. With nowhere to go, I could only stay in a cheap motel.

On the day of Cory and Alicia's wedding, I gave birth to my daughter alone in that filthy room, barely surviving the ordeal. I looked at their happy smiles on the screen, then at my miserable self and my frail baby girl.

Hopeless, I decided to end my life. That was when I awakened.

I learned that I was nothing more than a vicious supporting character in this story, while my daughter would inherit the same fate.

As Cory's illegitimate daughter, Blaire Dawson would be taken back into his family, only to be abused and neglected. She would grow up cold and twisted, constantly opposing the female lead.

In the end, she would die alone, her body lost beneath the sea.

After learning the truth of the storyline, I cut off all contact with everyone and left the country with Blaire. She was my daughter, my flesh and blood, and the only family I had left.

I would make sure she lived a happy life, one that prevented her from facing that tragic fate.

I thought I would never have anything to do with Cory or Alicia again, but I just had to run into them on my very first day back in Carmont.

I couldn't help but complain about my husband in my heart. I had clearly told him that Blaire and I weren't coming back, yet he stubbornly went against my wishes.

He waited until I fell asleep, then packed me up—blankets and all—and carried me onto a plane. By the time I woke up, I was already in Carmont. Thinking of that unreasonable yet persistent man, I couldn't help but smile.

"No, thanks," I told Cory. "My husband and I are very in love."

With that, I turned to leave, planning to find somewhere to rest.

Just then, my daughter, now Blaire Cooper, came running over after waking up and realizing she couldn't find me. "Mommy, I'm starving."

Cory stared at her face in shock. His eyes suddenly reddened. "Abby, I can't believe you secretly gave birth to my daughter. And I'm supposed to believe you're not in love with me even now?"

I nervously pulled Blaire behind me and hissed, "Don't even think about it, Cory! Blaire is my daughter and mine alone!"

The commotion finally caught Maverick's attention. He strode over and looked at me with a complicated expression, though a hint of guilt danced in his eyes.

"Abby, after you left, Mom, Dad, and I regretted it so much. We were wrong to have hurt you. Now that you're back, you can still return and reclaim your position as the Grant family's eldest daughter—it's always been yours.

"As compensation, we can give you 1% of the family's shares. The only condition is that you mustn't ruin Alicia's marriage."

Listening to his so-called compensation, I almost laughed.

The annual dividends from a 1% share would only be around a million dollars. Meanwhile, the company I built abroad made seven million dollars in net profit every month.

When Alicia saw Blaire, her face twisted in anger. Still, she forced herself to put on a generous expression.

"Perfect. I planned not to have children, anyway. Abby, why don't you let Blaire be adopted under my name? I'll treat her like my very own."

I caught the hidden resentment brewing in Alicia's eyes and spat out, "Forget it. Even if I die, I'll never let you take Blaire away."

In the original storyline, Alicia tortured Blaire.

It was then that Fiona jumped in as Alicia's mouthpiece. "You shamelessly gave birth to an illegitimate child, and Alicia is generous enough not to hold it against you. Having that kid raised under Alicia's care only benefits you.

"I see you're clinging to your daughter and refusing to let go. Are you planning to use her to climb back up?"

Maverick looked at me with disappointment. "Abigail, is this what you've become after all these years of fooling around outside? How did you become so shameless?"

When I figured it out, Ashton nodded without the slightest hesitation. "Yes, I orchestrated it. They hurt you like that. How could I possibly let them live freely?"He looked at me with heartache. "I still remember what you looked like when I first met you. You were so thin and fragile, it was like a gust of wind could knock you over."After I regained my memory, I took you to see a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. But I never told you what the practitioner diagnosed."Ashton's eyes reddened. "The damage they caused to you left your body so severely weakened that you lost 20 years of your life expectancy. There's no way to have a full recovery."Knowing that you might leave me years earlier than you should have, I just couldn't forgive them!"Hearing the emotion in his voice, I held his hand with an aching heart. "Meeting you is the single luckiest thing that's ever happened to me. We should just focus on the present and make every day count, Ashton."He buried hi

Ashton nodded. "I'll let the Grants come in first."Outside, the bodyguards let the Grant family enter. I looked at Michael Grant and Eleanor Raine—the couple who raised me—and realized they had aged drastically.Eleanor immediately burst into tears when she saw me. "Abigail, I was tricked by Alicia back then. That's why I thought you were wicked. I still don't understand why I could think that way. I raised you myself. How could I not know what kind of person you are?"Michael's eyes were also rimmed red. He looked at me with overflowing regret. "Abigail, I know you don't want to see us anymore, but I still need to apologize. We never meant for all those things to happen."I took in the regret in their eyes. It didn't seem fake. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. What I could surmise was what had happened to them. Back then, under the control of the storyline, they had lost their sense of reason and sided with Alicia. However, the story had ended five years ago. Little by

My eyes widened in disbelief. I never expected Ashton to say something like that.During that past year, I had indeed fallen in love with him while he had amnesia. However, the man who had regained his memory now belonged to a completely different world. He was the powerful patriarch of the Cooper family, while I was just a poor, struggling single mother. Not to mention, Blaire wasn't his daughter.Growing up in the Grant family, I had been taught that marriage between wealthy families was about matching backgrounds. Even if I were the Grant family's eldest daughter, I still wouldn't be good enough for the Coopers. So, I spilled my guts to Ashton, though he didn't take my concern seriously at all."They're just a bunch of fools. That's why they can't make decisions about their own marriages," he said. "The Cooper family is mine to control now. Trust me. Once you marry me, no one will ever make you suffer."While I was still mulling over it, Ashton had already made the decision. H

Before Maverick could even utter a word, the bodyguards standing behind him covered his mouth.Ashton looked at the exhaustion knotted between my brows and gently scooped me up into his arms. "Everyone, my wife is unwell today. The dinner will be rescheduled until further notice."No one in the hall dared to object. The guests could only watch silently as we left.Back at the five-star hotel, Ashton placed me on the bed and immediately called the accompanying doctor to examine me.After a careful check-up, the doctor said, "After years of recovery, Mrs. Cooper's condition has improved significantly. However, the damage to her internal organs can never be fully healed."She mustn't be overstressed. Her heart cannot withstand such intense emotional fluctuations again."Ashton nodded seriously. He lowered his head and promised me, "This will never happen again, Junia."Although I still had some doubts, a wave of drowsiness washed over my already heavy head. Soon, I could no longer

Ashton held me tightly in his arms, his heart aching for me. He pulled a medicine bottle from his pocket and took out a pill for me. After I swallowed it, the color gradually returned to my face.Still, I was weak and exhausted as I grabbed onto his clothes and anxiously asked, "How's Blaire?"Ashton gently patted my back to comfort me, then pointed to the side, where Blaire was being held and treated by the accompanying doctor. A layer of white ointment covered her swollen, red cheek. Before I knew it, she was back in my arms.I clung onto her, staring at her swollen eyes and pitiful little face. A surge of hatred rose in my chest. She sat obediently in my arms and even tried to comfort me. "Don't be sad, Mommy. I'm not in pain anymore."Seeing how sensible she was, I felt like my heart was being torn apart. My precious Blaire, the child I had cherished with all my heart, had just been mistreated by those monsters. With tears in my eyes, I turned to Ashton. "They did this to Bla

Indignant, Maverick added, "Are all the men in the world dead? Why must you insist on fighting your sister for a man?"I couldn't be bothered to waste another word on them. I picked up Blaire and turned to leave. Deep down, I blamed my husband, Ashton Cooper, even more.If he hadn't insisted on having an online meeting and asked me to meet him at the party, I would never have run into those psychos.I had only taken a few steps when someone grabbed me forcefully. Maverick roughly pulled Blaire out of my arms and handed her to Alicia. Then, he made the decision on his own and declared, "Blaire will be adopted under Alicia's name. Once you return to the Grant family, I'll introduce you to another suitable match. You just need to marry him. No questions asked."Frightened, Blaire burst into tears and reached out for me. "Mommy, I'm scared!"Seeing her tear-streaked little face, I panicked. Without hesitation, I slapped Maverick hard across the face. "I have nothing to do with you o
