Chapter 2

Autor: Cloud
"Her scandalous video spread all over the internet five years ago. Who would ever marry a woman like her?" Fiona taunted.

Cory's expression darkened as he coldly snapped, "Enough. Whoever brings that up again will face consequences."

Hearing him defend me, Alicia seemed somewhat resentful.

Cory looked at me with a sense of superiority. "Abby, I know you've loved me all these years, but you're only a fake heiress. Our backgrounds were never a match, so I couldn't marry you.

"After all these years, you should've moved on by now. I hope you're not here to ruin my relationship with Alicia."

His tone carried a warning. "The men invited to this business dinner are all wealthy and influential. Someone like you, with your current status, shouldn't even think about getting close to them.

"But for the sake of what we had, you can marry my assistant, William White. At least he can provide you with a stable life. I'll give you his number."

I watched Cory, who was clearly imagining things, then slowly raised my left hand and wiggled my ring finger. "That won't be necessary. I've been married for a long time."

"What? You're married?" Cory blurted out in disbelief, losing his composure.

Seeing how shocked he was, I laughed mockingly. "It's been five years. You didn't seriously think I was waiting for you this whole time, did you?"

The sarcasm in my voice rendered his face red. Embarrassment turned into anger. "If your brother hadn't asked me to look after you, I wouldn't even have bothered asking about you!"

Alicia looked at me and spoke in a misleading tone. "Abby, why would you come here and flirt with other men if you're already married? That's pretty unfair to your husband, don't you think?"

Cory's confidence returned as he looked like he had finally found something he could use against me. He stared at me with contempt. "That man must be miserable, marrying a vain and unfaithful woman like you."

His unkind eyes swept over me, his sense of superiority obnoxious. "I know you're unwilling to accept that you married a loser, but I'll do you a favor today and help you get out of that marriage.

"Maverick has been looking for you all this time. He still sees you as his little sister."

The sound of that name sent a shiver down my whole body. My breathing grew shaky.

Maverick Grant had once been the person who loved and protected me the most, my older brother. But after Alicia was brought home and the original storyline unfolded, he abandoned me.

Back then, I was the eldest daughter of the Grant family, Abigail Grant.

When I was ten years old, I was in a car accident. During the surgery, the Grants discovered that I wasn't their biological daughter.

Still, they firmly told me that I would always be the daughter they loved the most, even after they found their biological child. Naive as I was, I believed them.

When I turned 20, Alicia came back. At the time, she was thin, fragile, and timid. I felt guilty and sorry for her, so I took care of her with all my heart. I personally guided her, helping her fit into our social circle.

Little by little, she became bright, beautiful, and confident. At the same time, all my friends began to be drawn to her. They cursed me, saying I was nothing but a vicious imposter who refused to leave even after the real heiress had returned.

I was at a loss. They had known about my identity from the beginning, hadn't they?

As time went on, Alicia gradually revealed her true colors. She had never seen me as her older sister. In fact, from the first time we met, she had already wished I would die.

After teaming up with my friends to isolate me, she repeatedly set me up. She deliberately had people terrorize her, then ran to our parents in tears and accused me of orchestrating the bullying.

Under the influence of the storyline, no one listened to my explanations.

That very day, our parents announced they were kicking me out of the family. Maverick went even further. To vent Alicia's anger, he called the police and had me detained for ten days.

After he secretly gave instructions, the inmates inside ganged up on me. They broke three of my ribs, and my face was scarred so deeply that the wound almost reached the bone.

In the end, it was my then-fiance, Cory, who bailed me out. He took me back to his villa to recover. Furious, he cursed at everyone, saying they had all been deceived by Alicia and had failed to see through her facade.

"Abby, I'll always stand by your side. Once you recover, we'll get married," he had said to me with deep affection.

I believed his words. Full of hope, I waited, anticipating marrying him and building a new family together.

When I figured it out, Ashton nodded without the slightest hesitation. "Yes, I orchestrated it. They hurt you like that. How could I possibly let them live freely?"He looked at me with heartache. "I still remember what you looked like when I first met you. You were so thin and fragile, it was like a gust of wind could knock you over."After I regained my memory, I took you to see a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. But I never told you what the practitioner diagnosed."Ashton's eyes reddened. "The damage they caused to you left your body so severely weakened that you lost 20 years of your life expectancy. There's no way to have a full recovery."Knowing that you might leave me years earlier than you should have, I just couldn't forgive them!"Hearing the emotion in his voice, I held his hand with an aching heart. "Meeting you is the single luckiest thing that's ever happened to me. We should just focus on the present and make every day count, Ashton."He buried hi

Ashton nodded. "I'll let the Grants come in first."Outside, the bodyguards let the Grant family enter. I looked at Michael Grant and Eleanor Raine—the couple who raised me—and realized they had aged drastically.Eleanor immediately burst into tears when she saw me. "Abigail, I was tricked by Alicia back then. That's why I thought you were wicked. I still don't understand why I could think that way. I raised you myself. How could I not know what kind of person you are?"Michael's eyes were also rimmed red. He looked at me with overflowing regret. "Abigail, I know you don't want to see us anymore, but I still need to apologize. We never meant for all those things to happen."I took in the regret in their eyes. It didn't seem fake. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. What I could surmise was what had happened to them. Back then, under the control of the storyline, they had lost their sense of reason and sided with Alicia. However, the story had ended five years ago. Little by

My eyes widened in disbelief. I never expected Ashton to say something like that.During that past year, I had indeed fallen in love with him while he had amnesia. However, the man who had regained his memory now belonged to a completely different world. He was the powerful patriarch of the Cooper family, while I was just a poor, struggling single mother. Not to mention, Blaire wasn't his daughter.Growing up in the Grant family, I had been taught that marriage between wealthy families was about matching backgrounds. Even if I were the Grant family's eldest daughter, I still wouldn't be good enough for the Coopers. So, I spilled my guts to Ashton, though he didn't take my concern seriously at all."They're just a bunch of fools. That's why they can't make decisions about their own marriages," he said. "The Cooper family is mine to control now. Trust me. Once you marry me, no one will ever make you suffer."While I was still mulling over it, Ashton had already made the decision. H

Before Maverick could even utter a word, the bodyguards standing behind him covered his mouth.Ashton looked at the exhaustion knotted between my brows and gently scooped me up into his arms. "Everyone, my wife is unwell today. The dinner will be rescheduled until further notice."No one in the hall dared to object. The guests could only watch silently as we left.Back at the five-star hotel, Ashton placed me on the bed and immediately called the accompanying doctor to examine me.After a careful check-up, the doctor said, "After years of recovery, Mrs. Cooper's condition has improved significantly. However, the damage to her internal organs can never be fully healed."She mustn't be overstressed. Her heart cannot withstand such intense emotional fluctuations again."Ashton nodded seriously. He lowered his head and promised me, "This will never happen again, Junia."Although I still had some doubts, a wave of drowsiness washed over my already heavy head. Soon, I could no longer

Ashton held me tightly in his arms, his heart aching for me. He pulled a medicine bottle from his pocket and took out a pill for me. After I swallowed it, the color gradually returned to my face.Still, I was weak and exhausted as I grabbed onto his clothes and anxiously asked, "How's Blaire?"Ashton gently patted my back to comfort me, then pointed to the side, where Blaire was being held and treated by the accompanying doctor. A layer of white ointment covered her swollen, red cheek. Before I knew it, she was back in my arms.I clung onto her, staring at her swollen eyes and pitiful little face. A surge of hatred rose in my chest. She sat obediently in my arms and even tried to comfort me. "Don't be sad, Mommy. I'm not in pain anymore."Seeing how sensible she was, I felt like my heart was being torn apart. My precious Blaire, the child I had cherished with all my heart, had just been mistreated by those monsters. With tears in my eyes, I turned to Ashton. "They did this to Bla

Indignant, Maverick added, "Are all the men in the world dead? Why must you insist on fighting your sister for a man?"I couldn't be bothered to waste another word on them. I picked up Blaire and turned to leave. Deep down, I blamed my husband, Ashton Cooper, even more.If he hadn't insisted on having an online meeting and asked me to meet him at the party, I would never have run into those psychos.I had only taken a few steps when someone grabbed me forcefully. Maverick roughly pulled Blaire out of my arms and handed her to Alicia. Then, he made the decision on his own and declared, "Blaire will be adopted under Alicia's name. Once you return to the Grant family, I'll introduce you to another suitable match. You just need to marry him. No questions asked."Frightened, Blaire burst into tears and reached out for me. "Mommy, I'm scared!"Seeing her tear-streaked little face, I panicked. Without hesitation, I slapped Maverick hard across the face. "I have nothing to do with you o
