LOGINSince the accident last Saturday, Nathan and I have barely spoken to each other, avoiding one another like the plague. Even though we knew we must talk and be civil, part of me was glad that we didn’t.
I'm afraid he'll ask about the fainting episode during the lunch meeting.
"Hey, Uncle Peter, you called for me?" I asked as I entered his office. Earlier, after school, Athan had told me that my uncle wanted to speak with me, but he couldn’t accompany me because he and Danny had plans for a boys’ night out. And that usually meant girls were involved.
"Oh yes, sweetheart, I just wanted to apologise for the marriage arrangement and for the news I’m about to share." His tone was apologetic, and I could sense something serious in his words.
Confused, I just looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
Taking a deep breath, my uncle said, “Sweetheart, you’ll be living with the Stevens family. Since you two are engaged, this change would help you both grow closer.”
The news hit me like a ton of bricks. Nonetheless, I gave him a weak smile and kissed him on the cheek before walking out of the room, still reeling from the unexpected announcement.
Later that night, after finishing my homework, I stepped outside to the backyard and walked toward the mini-forest near the pond. I lay on my back, letting the cold wind touch my face while the moonlight bathed me. Looking up at the stars, surrounded by nature, always gave me peace.
The night was proof of the beauty darkness could possess—if you just looked up.
It gave me the strength I needed to hold back the tears after hearing the news. First, a forced marriage, and now I was supposed to live with Nathan? For most people, living with their betrothed would be a dream come true, but for me, in a situation where my fiancé loved another girl, it felt like a test I wasn’t prepared for.
I knew I had become fragile since the tragedy. I couldn’t handle too much pain or shock anymore without breaking down. And now, being forced into a situation that triggered memories I desperately tried to forget only made things worse.
For the rest of the night, I stayed there, trying to keep my eyes open, too afraid to fall asleep and face my nightmare once more.
Every night, those memories haunted me in my dreams, like a videotape that replayed endlessly. Nightmares were a twisted form of reality created by your own mind, torturing you, and you could do nothing but pray for someone or something to wake you up. But in that moment, feeling the peace that radiated from nature, my eyelids grew heavy.
I opened my eyes, still half-asleep, only to find that I was being moved. Danny was carrying me in his arms.
“Hey, go to sleep. I’ll carry you to your room,” he said gently.
I wasn’t sure how he had found me, but I was grateful. He laid me down in bed, then sat beside me, stroking my hair.
“Don’t frighten us like that again, okay, Rosie? We were worried when your uncle called and said you weren’t at the house,” he said softly.
“Where are they?” I mumbled, referring to Uncle and Athan.
“Don’t worry. I’ll call them to come back. They’re out looking for you.”
“I’m so sorry,” I whispered, still on the verge of sleep.
“Sleep, Rosie. You’ll need it,” Danny said, his voice soft.
“Thank you, Danny. I love you,” I murmured with a small smile.
“I love you too,” he replied softly, kissing my forehead before walking out of my room.
The next morning, I started packing my things, preparing to transfer to my soon-to-be in-laws’ house.
“You ready, baby? Let’s go,” Uncle said as he helped load my things into the trunk of the car.
“Let’s go!” he called inside, signalling for Danny and Athan.
After an hour-long drive, we finally arrived at the Rodriguez’s house, where we were greeted by Aunt Clarisse and Uncle Arthur.
“Hey, sweetie! Welcome to our home!” Aunt Clarisse greeted me with a warm hug, while Uncle Arthur gave me a big smile.
As I looked around, I noticed that Nathan was nowhere to be found.
“Are you looking for him?” Uncle Arthur asked, noticing my gaze. “Don’t worry, he’ll be here soon. He’s stubborn, I’m sorry. But he’ll come around.”
I didn’t know how to feel about that, but I tried to push the thought aside as we entered their beautiful home. The Stevens house was elegant but not showy. It was a two-story house with a small pool in the backyard, simple yet exquisite. The décor was mostly antique, which I loved, and the house was filled with natural light from all the windows and glass walls.
“Please take care of my niece, Stevens. She’s already like a daughter to me,” my uncle said, his words making me smile, though I tried to hide the emotion.
“Of course, we’ll take care of her. She’ll be our daughter soon,” Aunt Clarisse said with confidence.
After chatting for a couple of hours, Uncle and the boys said their goodbyes, leaving me with my new family. Aunt Clarisse showed me to my room, and it was more beautiful than I could have imagined. The walls were painted forest green, and the antique closet and bed gave the room a cosy, timeless feel. Everything was organised, and my bed was large and inviting.
"Do you like it?" Aunt Clarisse asked nervously, playing with the tips of her fingers.
I couldn’t help but smile at her. “Like it? Auntie, I love it!”
Her face lit up with the biggest smile, and without thinking, I hugged her tightly, feeling a wave of gratitude for the kindness she had shown me.
Just as we were enjoying the moment, a cough interrupted us. I turned to see Nathan leaning in the doorway, his arms crossed.
“Mom, can I talk to my fiancée?” he asked, his tone cold.
Aunt Clarisse nodded and left the room, leaving me alone with Nathan.
I hesitated before speaking. “Uh, what do you want to talk about?” I asked, shy and unsure of how to act around him.
He didn’t waste time with pleasantries. “Look, I’ll only say this once. I don’t care if you’re my fiancée or if you’ll be my wife. I love my girlfriend, and she’ll always have my heart. So, if you think you’re going to be a part of my life, think again.”
With that, he left, slamming the door so hard it nearly made my ears ring.
He loved someone else. This marriage was bound to be worse than what my parents had. At least my mother had found love in the middle of her marriage, but Nathan already had someone else in his heart before this even began.
Tears filled my eyes as I let out the pain I had been holding in. I cried to relieve the pressure, the stress, and the memories that threatened to overwhelm me. And just as I was about to drift into sleep, I realised I was falling into another nightmare.
Could this situation get any worse?
NATHAN'S POVI jolted awake, my chest heavy with unease. For days now, I had been hearing soft cries, moans, and even agonising screams in the middle of the night. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but it kept happening. The eerie sounds echoed through the house, vanishing the moment I woke up. It felt as if a ghost had taken residence in our home.Sitting on my bed, I ran a hand through my hair, trying to steady my nerves. I listened closely, waiting to hear the sounds again. After a minute of silence, I sighed and decided to go downstairs for some water. It had also been days since she became cold—so cold I could compare her to ice. Rosie. She barely spoke to me, and when she did, it was only to answer my questions in the shortest way possible.Since that day, the incident remained a mystery to our family, but we let it go, just as Athan wished. But Rosie's treatment toward me had changed. Was it so wrong for me to ask her to apologise to my girlfriend for mistreating her? It
"You are such a liar!""You are such a liar!""You are such a liar!"Those words he left me echoed in my mind repeatedly, drowning me in my most feared place. Before I knew it, I was frozen still, and my subconsciousness brought me back to the past where my most feared nightmare lies."Child, you need to tell me the truth! Your father pushed and killed your mother, didn't he?" the scary-looking police officer shouted at me for the hundredth time.I was in the police station after the horrible situation I had witnessed. The police came to our door and found my mother dead in a pool of her own blood while my father stood at the top of the staircase with fifteen-year-old me curled up in the corner of the room. The officer was terrifying. He was six feet tall, with a bulky frame, greasy hair, and glaring eyes. He stood in front of me, both hands pressed on the table between us while I sat there, tense. He would occasionally slam his hands on the tab
"I... what? It's not like that, Olivia. We were never a couple—this was all arranged. Didn't Nathan tell you?" I stuttered as I spoke, trying to reason with her.The last thing I wanted was to cause a scene. Nathan would surely be furious, and I didn't want to ruin the progress we'd made earlier. For once, we were talking without cold glares or harsh tones, and I preferred it that way. But if I said anything against Olivia, knowing full well how much he loved her, it wouldn't end well for me."You are lying bitch!" she screamed, her palm connecting sharply with my cheek. The sting radiated across my skin, but before I could react, she turned toward Nathan, who was making his way back. Relief washed over me at his return—until Olivia’s next move shocked me.With a malicious glint in her eyes and a smirk that sent chills down my spine, she grabbed the glass of water in front of me. Before Nathan could reach us, she flung the water over her
NATHAN'S POVI know what I did was wrong—cruel, even. Especially when I know that she realised her mistake in agreeing to this engagement, and she’s trying to make up for it by being nice. But every time I saw her, I couldn’t help but feel angry.Today, Olivia came with me to school. She attended a different school—one owned by her family—so she occasionally tags along. When we enter the cafeteria, my eyes instinctively search for Rosie. She looked beautiful, and the way she interacted with Daniel and Athan made it obvious how much she loved them. They love her just as much in return. But when I saw Daniel hug her and kiss her cheek, an irrational annoyance crept up inside me. Athan did the same, but he was brief while Daniel’s lingered. Why do I even care? Why am I acting like a jealous boyfriend?I brought my girl here; I have no right to feel this way. I should be focusing on Olivia, not Rosie.“So, babe, i
After what happened last night, I had no idea how to go downstairs and face Nathan. How could I have just burst out at him like that? Yes, I’m stubborn most of the time and rarely think before I act, but when I set my mind to something, I do it. I promised to be nice to him, yet I ended up shouting at him instead.‘Great. This is just great!’ I could only hope my outburst hadn’t fuelled his feelings for me—particularly his anger. Not wanting him to barge into my room, fuming mad because he had to wake me up again, I got up, grabbed my clothes from the closet, and headed to the bathroom.Dressed in faded jeans with a few rips and a blue SpongeBob shirt, I made my way downstairs to join the Stevens for breakfast.“Good morning!” I greeted everyone with a bright smile, taking my seat at the table. The aroma of bacon and eggs filled the air, instantly lifting my mood. Good food always brightened my mornings.
"Wake up! You're no VIP to be taking this long. We're going to be late for school!"I was jolted awake by the furious voice and loud knocking of—oh, wait—it’s Nathan. He stood at my door, arms crossed, looking at me like I was some kind of inconvenience."What’s the point of knocking if you already opened the door?" I mumbled, my voice thick with sleep as I yawned."Good, you're up. Get ready. My mom told me to tell you that breakfast is ready. And next time, wake yourself up—I’m not your slave," he snapped before walking out of my room.‘Seriously, does he have a mood disorder or something? Should I refer him to my doctor?’ I thought we were past this constant bickering. With a sigh, I got up, fixed my bed, and took a quick shower. I changed into dark blue jeans, paired with a lime-green sweatshirt and sneakers, before heading downstairs. Nathan and his parents were already at the table, eating breakfast. The sight of strawberry pancakes made my stomach growl in anticipation—my absol
