Chapter 1

Author: Old Acquaintance
Following the GPS directions, I raced to the hospital, but the receptionist at the clinic blocked my path.

"Who are you here to see?"

I spoke calmly, giving my wife's name.

"I'm here for Rebecca Harris. I'm her husband."

The receptionist gave me a suspicious look, then scoffed.

"You've got the wrong person! Miss Rebecca's husband is our hospital dean. He's in the room with their baby right now. And just so you know, we don't disclose other patients' private information."

I slammed my hand down on the counter, my voice rising as I said, "Cut the crap. If I say to check, you check. My dad's a major investor in this place; I'm practically the head. Don't I have that right? And as for a husband catching his wife cheating, that's his prerogative, so save your breath!"

The nurse gave me a look like I was out of my mind, then snorted.

"Mister, you must be dreaming! Our dean's got money and power, and he's not the type to have an affair. You, on the other hand, have either lost your mind, or..."

She did not get to finish. A commotion erupted from down the hall.

"Miss Rebecca is so lucky to have a husband like you. You're not just making her soup and taking care of her after the birth, but you're even carrying her to the bathroom. That's just so sweet."

"Yeah! And the way you mix the baby's formula and change diapers, it's rare to find a man as tender and attentive as you."

I shoved past the receptionist and bolted into the hallway, where a nurse was speaking with a look of pure envy.

"Even though Miss Rebecca can't have any more kids after this tough delivery, with a devoted husband like you and a healthy eight-pound son, she's set for a lifetime of happiness."

At those words, I felt a surge of anger.

I never imagined that my wife would bear another man's child, wrecking her health so badly she would never carry another, and I was the last to know.

I shoved past the onlookers. There he was, cradling the baby.

Seeing his face, I was rooted to the spot, my voice barely a whisper as I said, "Marvin?"

It was Rebecca's brother-in-law, Marvin Hughes. His wife, Rebecca's sister, had passed away young, and he had stayed single, honoring her memory.

He had kept up with the Harris family out of respect for his late wife, and Rebecca's folks had practically adopted him.

However, he had a child with his sister-in-law, Rebecca. From a nobody, he had climbed to the top, running that hospital. It did not take a genius to figure out who had pulled the strings.

I was blindsided. I had put Rebecca on a pedestal, secretly funneled investments from my family and my dad into the Harris Group, and busted my hump overseas for their deals.

For what? Rebecca cheated on me and handed everything I had worked for to Marvin.

Marvin's eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw me.

"Daniel, you... What are you doing back? Aren't you locked in some deal abroad for another year?"

I did not think twice before I cleared out the marital home of everything I had bought and headed back to the family house.Rebecca bombarded me with messages in the days that followed.[Honey, I know I messed up. I can't live without you. Please, let's stop this madness and come back! The company's falling apart, the employees are quitting, and the patients' families are in an uproar. I can't handle it alone. I need you.][Honey, we built this company together. Will you really stand by and watch it crumble? Come back and help me out! Talk to your dad about the investment. With all the money your family has, why fuss over a little investment?]I saw her pleas and did not hesitate to hit block and erase her number. The divorce was another matter I left to my dad's lawyer. It was a straightforward case; the papers were ready in a month.Rebecca had been unfaithful first, so the divorce was a slam dunk for me. She tried every trick in the book to reach me, but I never gave her the s

Rebecca's face contorted with anger, and she asked, her voice shaking, "What? The Joneses are the top dogs in wealth? You've got to be pulling my leg, teaming up with them to fool me, right? How else could I be clueless about this?"They were beside themselves with worry."Ms. Harris, if you don't buy it, come see for yourself! The Joneses have their fingers in every pie across the country, from real estate to electronics and household goods. They even had a stake in Harris Group. However, they've pulled out their investment just now. Rebecca quickly pulled up the trending posts online, and right there at the top was a video of Marvin performing a surgery three months earlier. He was in the middle of everything when a phone call came through. Without a second thought, he bolted, leaving everyone else to fend for themselves. The patient almost did not make it out of surgery alive, and when the family confronted him for answers, he just called the cops and had them hauled away for causing trouble. Then, there was Marvin, caught on video in a hospital affair with a nurse, and it went viral. The netizens lost their minds. Some even dug up Marvin's home address and phone number, which, to my horror, was the very house Rebecca and I had made our home after getting married. It all clicked; they had been shacking up the moment I was out of the country on business.Watching those two, a scoundrel and a cheat, I was seething. The scandal did not just hit them; it rocked the whole hospital. The big shots ordered a full-sc

It was my dad. He looked solemn as he gave my shoulder a reassuring pat.Nearby stood my mom, and to my surprise, my maternal grandparents, Grandma Helen and Grandpa Wilson, and a whole bunch of relatives had shown up.The knot of worry in my chest finally loosened, and I could not help but cough up blood. Those security guards had really done a number on me, leaving a dull pain in my chest. My mom guided me to a nearby chair and gave me a pill, which made me start to feel a bit better.Grandma Helen and my paternal grandmother, Grandma Susan, with tears in their eyes, were fussing over me."There, there, you've been through a lot. Let me blow on it, and the pain will go away," Grandma Susan said, trying to sooth me."I'm sorry. I should've visited sooner. No one would've dared to pick on you then. Just wait, your Grandpa Wilson will take care of those guys," Grandma Helen promised.Rebecca looked overwhelmed by the crowd at first, but then she sneered."Daniel, aren't you a b

She dashed to my side, lifting me up, and snapped at the doctors who were idly standing by."What are you waiting for? Can't you see that he's hurt? Get moving and help him! If my husband's harmed, I swear I'll have you all thrown out on your ears."She cradled me close, her eyes swimming with worry. "Honey, are you okay?"Her anxious look took me back to the days before we tied the knot.Rebecca was just a small-time nurse with big dreams back then. When we became an item, she shared her ambition to be a CEO. To make it happen, I tapped into my family's wealth and connections, investing in her future.I even drank myself to a bleeding ulcer to clinch a deal for her.She would look at me with those same eyes, tears in her gaze as she squeezed my hand, promising a lifetime of love forever. However, who could have known her promise of forever would last only five years? The irony stung.I could not hold back my question."Rebecca, when did you get pregnant? I looked up, relief flooding through me as I saw my in-laws, Patrick Harris and Nancy Cobb, striding toward us.I was about to speak when Marvin beat me to it, his voice soaked in tears."Mom, Dad, thank goodness you're here. If you'd been any later, your grandson might have been killed."Patrick and Nancy hurried over to Marvin, checking on the wailing baby in his arms. Nancy, frantic with worry, rounded on me, her words sharp as knives."Daniel, how could you be so cruel? To drop Marvin's child? Don't you realize he's our family's only heir? Are you heartless?"If you don't apologize to Marvin and your nephew today, I'm going to make sure Rebecca leaves you!"Their words sent a chill through my heart."You know about Rebecca having a child with him, don't you?"Nancy looked away, a flicker of guilt in her eyes, before she boldly continued, saying, "For years, Marvin's been the picture of loyalty for our late daughter, and he's been nothing but devoted to us, his elders.
