Luz set Estrela down gently on a flat rock near the water’s edge. His breath cam in heavy, controlled pulls, the dark marks on his collarbone pulsing faintly with the exertion. He stood over her like a sentinel, one hand resting on the hilt of his sword, the other wiping sweat form his brow. He looked down at the river. The yellow tint was fading, swirling away in thin ribbons toward the mouth of the cave. “It is working,” he said, his voice rough. “The corruption in t

The air inside the tent smelled of old parchment, dried ink, and something faintly metallic– the scent of old blood and dried paint. On the left side of the tent is a large, heavy rough-hewn wooden table covered with papers, maps, books, rolled documents and writing materials. Several sheets have bene spread across the tabletop, including what appears to be a detailed map with lines and markings. There are also several leather-bound books stacked near the front edge, along with rolled parchment. A dark ceramic cup sits near the centre of the table. The table is paired with a sturdy wooden chair with a dark green piece of fabric has been casually draped over its back. Leaning against the wall near the table are several swords and pieces of equipment. Their dark blades and wooden handles contrast against the cream canvas of the tent. Additional wooden chests are stacked near the table, some closed and others apparently used for storing documents or supplies.

Brains deep brown eyes scanned the wooden cells. “Cidade dos Escravos also has plenty of storage space for the undeserving,” he added, his deep brown eyes flickering with mischief. “Cidade dos Escravos would like to join you on your divine path.” The offer hung in the air like a heavy mist. Estrela felt a surge of something she had not experienced in a long time: genuine interest. Cidade dos Escravos was a powerhouse of faith and gold, and if Brain was offering their resources, he was offering more than just storage space. He was offering an empire. “An alliance,” she said, her voice rich with approval. “A union of purpose. The Gods favour those who build together.” Brian’s smile widened, revealing teeth that were perhaps too white, too perfect. “Precisely. Cidade dos Escravos can provide ships, supplies, and– most importantly– he kind of disciplined followers your fountain seems to require.

“Let him watch,” Estrela murmured to herself, turning her back on the shore. “Let him tell the world of the miracles he sees here.” But as the days turned into weeks, the miracles grew fewer and the cells grew more numerous. The camp was not a sprawling necropolis of wooden cages, filled with people who had been broken by the very thing they thought would save them. A counsellor from the city called Cidade dos Escravos, came to the island. He arrived on a ship built from warm honey brown pine timber; its sails shades of blue, framed by red. The ship was a large, three-masted sailing vessel with a broad, sturdy wooden hull which rose substantially above the water. Heavy wooden beams, railings, ladders, ropes, pulleys, and rigging cover the decks. Numerous ropes run from the masts to the bow and stern, creating an intricate web of lines across the ship. At the front of the ship a bow is projected dramatically forward into an ornate bowsprit

The dockworker’s grip on the man was iron tight, his face set in a mask of practiced indifference. “You can’t just come up here like this,” the dock worker said calmly. “Let me go!” the man roared, his boots skidding in the dirt as he lunged toward the cells. “Emile! Emile, can you hear me?!” The girl in the cell froze. Her head snapping toward the sound of the name, her sunken eyes widening with a sudden, piercing clarity that cut through her feverish madness. “Emile!” she whispered her voice cracking. The commotion drew attention. Several workers turned from their task, their iridescent eyes tracking the struggle with a slow, predatory curiosity. Escuro approached, her golden hair shimmering like a warning beacon. “Who is this man?” Estrela asked, her voice carrying effortlessly across the distance. The dockworker released Amr with a shove, sending him stumbling backward. “I am Mar,

“That sounds amazing,” Estrela said with a light smile. “You are a lucky man.” The ship crested a large wave, sending a spray of seawater against the hull that sounded like gravel thrown against the wall. Luz let out a short, dry laugh– the first real sound of amusement to escape him in years. “Lucky?” he shook his head slow. “No. I am just a man who is tired of running.” He reached up and unbuckled the top clasp of his breastplate, the heavy metal clattering softly as he set it on the floor. The dark veins on his collarbone were more visible now, twisting like ivy in the dim light. He looked at Estrela, his crimson eyes steady. “But if we make it to Cidade dos Escravos… if we actually pull this off…” he paused, the weight of the plan settling between them. “Then maybe we all get that cabin. Maybe we all get to be lucky.”“Maybe…” Estrela trailed off and continued st

In the dim lantern light, the black veins crawling up Luz’s throat seemed to pulse in time with the ship’s movement. The darkness was restless tonight. It felt like needles under Luz’s skin, a constant, low-grade fever that never truly broke. He looked toward the door, then toward Estrela’s cot across the room. ‘If Mestre Escuro saw us like this…’ The thought was a cold blade in his mind. He could not let anyone see him soft. The cabin fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the creaking timber and the distant wash of waves. Luz’s gaze drifted from the sleeping Amelia to Estrela, who lay motionless on the opposite cot. The lantern light caught the sharp lines of her face, casting her in pale, ghostly shadows.Luz knew that look. It was the look of someone counting the sins they carried, weighing them against the lives they had lost. “You are thinking about the fountain,” he said quietly. It was not a question. His

“That is not you fate,” Luz declared firmly, his voice carrying the authority of someone used to giving orders that were obeyed without question. “You are not some chattel to be bartered away to the highest bidder.” He closed the distance between them again in two long strides, his armoured form

“Found a way?” his voice rose sharply, echoing in the black tent. “There was no way! You think I wanted to abandon you? To watch you grown up without me while I became this… this monster?” he gestured wildly at his corrupted form, at the dark marks creeping up his neck and the crimson sigils puls

“What in the bloody hell are you doing here?” Luz’s voice emerged rougher than intended, betraying both anger and something deeper he couldn’t quite name. His grip tightened on the hilt until his knuckles turned white against the black veins crawling up his fingers. “Luz?” Amelia asked softly, he

Luz’s grip on Amelia’s red hair tightened slightly, both painfully but demanding obedience. The black vein on his neck pulsed furiously as the Darkness within him sensed the victory– this human soul willingly surrendering herself. “You will sleep in my quarters and eat at my table. Every Corrompi
