Chapter 1

Author: Cece Jones
The day I found out I had late-stage stomach cancer, I thought it could not get worse. I just wanted some cheap pain medications to dull the ache.

However, the second I walked through the door, I received a greeting I did not expect. It was a cup hurled at my head with deadly aim.

My vision reddened as I locked eyes with my brother, Will, his own eyes blazing with anger.

"Today's the anniversary of Mom and Dad's passing. Where on earth did you vanish to?" he shouted, yanking me by the hair and dragging me down in front of the family portraits, demanding an apology.

"If it weren't for you, they'd still be alive! Apologize! Admit you're in the wrong..."

Before, I would have caved to his demands, apologizing to the smiling faces in the photos.

However, after seeing how they doted on Jasmine Hawkins, our adopted sister, I finally understood something. The love I had been starved of all those years was never meant for me.

The throbbing in my head was making me woozy.

"What did I do?" I asked.

For 18 years, Jasmine's family treated me like dirt. My own parents caused that car crash for Jasmine's sake, leaving me with a decade of guilt.

I gave up a kidney to save my brother, worked myself to the bone to pay his medical bills, and finally, I was sick and broke. Was that my fault, too?

"You messed up, making them switch your identity with Jasmine's. That was your mistake!

"Helen, you're only getting what you deserve!" he snarled, slamming my head against the floor.

Everything went black with the sharp crack, but he did not stop, not until his phone rang with a tune I knew too well. It was Jasmine.

He hung up and exploded again.

"Helen, cut the act. Did you upset Jasmine again?" he growled, gripping my hair like he wanted to end me right there.

However, my strength was fading fast.

"I didn't... I swear I didn't..."

I tried to explain to Will, my voice barely a whisper.

He did not buy it, convinced I was lying through my teeth.

He strung me up under the staircase, leaving me dangling in the air.

The chill from the wall and the sharp pain in my hands were almost too much to bear.

Will grabbed my chin, his eyes filled with a disgust I had never seen before.

"If anything happens to Jasmine, you'll regret it forever."

I watched him walk away, the weakness in my body screaming at me to fight for my life.

Luckily for me, the rope was not tied too tightly. With every ounce of strength, I rubbed my hands raw against it. Finally, just before the break of dawn, I hit the ground.

The next thing I knew, I woke up in a hospital bed.

I turned to see Melissa Parker, my landlady, looking at me with such kindness.

"Helen, how are you feeling? Are you still in pain?"

My hands were bandaged; her soft voice almost brought me to tears.

"I'm okay now, Mrs. Parker. Can you help me with the discharge papers? I'm broke.

"And about the rent, I've got it covered, but I won't be renewing my lease..."

I blurted out everything in one go, then braced myself against the pain as I searched for the money.

Melissa sighed and handed me the doctor's report. "Helen, the doctor says you don't have much time left.

"Why don't you take better care of yourself?"

That was when I could not hold back the tears any longer.

I did not cry when Will lashed out at me in his illness.

I did not cry when customers gave me a hard time at work.

I did not cry when I found out about the cancer.

However, Melissa's words broke the dam, and I sobbed uncontrollably.

At least I had three months. I had three months to ditch my family and finally live for myself.

Will nodded. "I've known ever since I dug into your affairs. That was why the contract you signed had a little surprise: a donation agreement for the inheritance."We don't care about the money, but you will pay with your lives for what happened to Helen!"Jasmine's gaze shifted to my parents, her pretty face twisted in anguish."You think we should die for this? Am I the only one to blame for Helen's death?"You, all of you, are the real murderers! You were the ones who truly killed her!"My mom forced a smile, one that was more hideous than her tears. "Yes, we're guilty. We all deserve to go down with Helen!""You're all insane! Let me out of here!" Jasmine realized the full extent of the nightmare and frantically tried to escape. However, my brother would not let her get away.He inflicted all the agony back onto them, just like Jasmine's parents had once tormented me.He carved countless wounds into his own flesh.I watched as Jasmine's beauty withered away like a dying r

Nobody would have guessed that Jasmine, with her sweet smile, was actually into hurting others: from the smallest critter to full-grown adults. She had the power and the knack for keeping her nasty streak hidden.Only a handful of people knew about her dark side.My parents could not believe it. Their precious Jasmine, the one they doted on, was the source of such unbearable pain.It hit them then, just how much I had been put through all those years they had looked the other way."Don't worry. I'm not going to let you off the hook that easily."She whipped out a lash and struck my parents hard, the saltwater-soaked barbs making them wish for the end. They were sweating bullets from the pain, their mouths muffled by the guards. However, in the nick of time, my brother burst in with his guards and saved them."Lock them up for now. We'll sort this out later."Dad, Mom, can you move? If you can, we need to get to Helen. She's running out of time..."They did not let their woun

"As long as you're not her brother. Poor Helen, she's been through so much because of him."Helen's got to be the most unfortunate soul I've ever met."The manager spilled everything, and Will finally understood that every fancy meal he had enjoyed came from my sacrifices, from scrimping and saving, from giving up my share so he could have the best.I was juggling three jobs a day, even taking on risky gigs for the extra cash, all to afford his therapy sessions. In a quiet moment of reflection, the manager could not help but whisper, "How can someone like him even deserve to be called her family?"Will's face was ghostly as he retraced the steps of my old part-time gigs, piecing together a past he had never known.I had fought through pain for cash, coming close to getting knocked out for good more than once. Those days when I vanished? I had spent most of them in the ER. The deeper he dug, the more he realized he had been clueless. Then, while he was on the hunt for more clues,

A loud slap echoed throughout the room; my usually calm dad struck my brother. "You fool! Is this how you treat your sister?"Will clutched his cheek, guilt written all over his face. Then, he saw me lift my shirt, revealing a body marred with too many scars to count, and a particularly stark one across my stomach."When I was 20, Will's kidneys failed, and I gave him one of mine."When I was 21, he got diagnosed with manic depression, and these scars were the gifts he gave me for my birthday."I looked at my brother, a sad smile on my face. "I never told you, but to pay for your treatment, I survived on the cheapest food, going hungry more often than not. And now, I've got stomach cancer."I couldn't shake the thought that it was my fault you lost the parents you adored. If only I hadn't been so headstrong, maybe you, Mom, and Dad would've shown me the same love you guys showered on Jasmine."The day I turned 28, after I found out my parents were still alive, I passed out cold

The hospital's antiseptic stench was overpowering.I woke up with a scowl, alone as ever. The fatigue washing over me was a grim reminder: my clock was ticking down fast.I hit the web, found a lawyer, and got a family disownment papers in the works.Once we hashed out the details...Will stormed into my room, his face a thundercloud of fury."Helen, you've really outdone yourself, fooling the hospital into faking your records!"You think I'm clueless? You're just trying to one-up Jasmine."Get this straight: you'll never beat Jasmine. She's the sister I choose."I met his gaze and whispered, "Then, what am I to you, Will?""You? You're nothing but a decoy, a pawn we played to trick our blood."So, I was just the fall guy all along."Now that I'm no longer useful, just let me go."I knew too well the might of our family. With barely a month left, freedom was all I was after."What are you even saying? The whole time I was stuck in the hospital, my mom and dad did not even visit me once.It was not until I had sorted out all my problems and was checking out that they decided to pop back into my life."We've kept things from you for a decade, but let's be real, you've been a letdown too," they said."Jasmine's been crying for you, though. She knows that you saved her life. Just remember who you are and don't stir up trouble, okay?"Just like that, with a couple of sentences, they tried to wipe ten years of pain and struggle as if it were nothing.I ran my fingers over the scars that crisscrossed my skin, each one a story of neglect and cruelty from the people who were supposed to be my guardians for the past 18 years.I massaged my stomach, aching from the cancer that came from never knowing when my next meal would be.I thought about the fresh bruises my brother gave me, the ones he called punishments. The jagged line where my kidney used to be was a souvenir from eight years
