Chapter 1

Author: Tri Marsh
It was the first time my son, Caleb, had ever looked at me that way.

A chill climbed slowly up my spine, and I faked being angry to cover it.

"Go do your homework. Keep talking nonsense like that and I'll let your father deal with you when he gets home."

Caleb looked at me once, then went back to his room without a word.

"Believe me or don't. That's up to you.

"But Dad's going to take my side anyway."

The door banged shut, and just like that we were in two different worlds.

I stayed frozen on the couch, my hands and feet shaking.

He hadn't been putting it on. Had Julian really been keeping another family somewhere?

That influencer.

The mother's name was Serena Harlow, thirty years old, with a soft, gentle face.

The daughter was Maya, only four months younger than Caleb.

I'd been following them for a year, and the girl's father had never once appeared on camera.

Now that I was looking properly, Maya's eyes and brows really did have something of Julian in them.

I scrolled, gripping the phone until my fingertips went white.

Back in June, Serena posted that Maya's father had given her milk she was allergic to by mistake, and she'd panicked and asked her follower group chat what to do.

Caleb was allergic to milk too, so I knew the drill. I typed out a long list of what to watch for.

Afterward, she messaged me privately.

"Her dad's so careless. He's home so rarely that he wants to give her everything at once. Thank you for today."

The photo showed Maya asleep, with a man's hand resting beside her.

The wedding band on that ring finger was identical to Julian's.

I'd spent two months designing that ring myself. There wasn't another one like it.

And at the time I'd been busy setting up Julian's new study, so I hadn't looked twice.

My blood went cold all through me. Tears slid down from the corners of my eyes.

But where would he even find the time to get to Harborcrest?

At ten past eight, right on schedule, the front door opened.

Julian cupped my face, startled and stricken.

"Audrey, why are you crying?"

I looked at him and the tears came harder.

I couldn't get a single word out.

Julian turned, kicked open Caleb's door, and hauled him out for a scolding.

"You upset your mother again, didn't you?"

Once, watching this would have made me feel adored. Now it just felt like a blade going in.

The bag he'd set down held a new home fragrance.

I never used that kind. But it was all over Serena's house in every video she posted.

I looked it up. The brand was sold in Eastcliff only. You couldn't buy it in Harborcrest.

"Audrey, did you get Caleb's things and mine packed? We fly out to the estate tomorrow."

Julian steered Caleb into the kitchen to carry the food out.

I blinked. "I packed it all this morning."

On the twentieth of every month, he flew a thousand miles to the Whitlock estate to lay flowers at his mother's grave.

Julian said my old back injury made long flights a bad idea.

I used to find that thoughtfulness sweet.

Later, once Caleb was old enough, he started taking him along.

It never occurred to me to wonder about any of it.

Now, with my hands shaking, I logged into his airline account.

Eastcliff to Harborcrest.

Eight years of marriage. Two hundred thirty-six tickets.

Not one of them went anywhere near the estate.

So all of it had been a lie.

A BrightLoop alert popped up. Serena had posted a new video.

"Maya's dad comes home tomorrow, so I'm at the store picking up everything they like."

Walking past a shelf of intimate products, she dropped two boxes into her cart.

Her followers went wild. I felt like I'd gone through the ice.

I knew Serena had filmed that part for me.

Julian chattered away, moving food onto my plate.

"Don't stay up late while you're here on your own. Caleb and I will be back as soon as we've been out to the cemetery..."

Under the table I was gripping the pregnancy report until my vision went soft at the edges.

"Are you going to your mother's grave, or are you going to Harborcrest?"

Julian's POVI lied to Audrey. It never rained in Harborcrest that day.I just ran into a girl who looked like she needed help, and I helped her.She was in a white dress, backed up against a wall at an intersection by a few men.It put me in mind of Audrey in high school, the time a group of them had her cornered.I stopped the car and shouted at them twice. They scattered. The girl was shaking, crying, her voice very small. She had that Harborcrest lilt in it."Sir. Thank you."I looked at her and popped the lock."Get in. I'll take you somewhere safe."She told me her name was Serena Harlow. After that it was like opening Pandora's box.I stayed on in Harborcrest an extra day.By the time I got back, Audrey's mother had already been cremated.Audrey sobbed against my chest until her voice went, and she still remembered to ask after me."It rained in Harborcrest, didn't it? Did the damp get into your knee?"She trusted me that completely. One look at a weather repo

Julian came back a week later. He knelt outside the guesthouse all night with a hundred roses in his arms. The snow came down heavily and buried him until he looked like a snowman himself.Caleb cried and begged me."Mom, something's going to happen to him if he stays out there."I took two umbrellas downstairs.Julian was shaking hard, the tip of his nose bright red."Is this the plan? Hurt yourself until I have to forgive you?"I looked down at him."No. No, Audrey. I did something wrong and I should pay for it. I just wanted you to see that I mean it."His eyes were red, and his lips wouldn't stop shaking."I made Serena end the pregnancy, and I've settled money on her. She and Maya are staying in Glacier Falls. You'll never have to see either of them again."You were pregnant. Why didn't you tell me?"He pushed forward on his knees, desperate for an answer. My face didn't move."I was going to tell you that day. Then I found out about the affair, and there wasn't any

That evening I got a friend request. It was Serena.I thought about it, then accepted. She messaged me right away."Audrey, I'm begging you. Could you ask Julian to bring us back?"So after I left, Julian had shipped the two of them out of state. He'd sent them to Glacier Falls, up in Farrow, one of the coldest cities in the country.Maya had run a fever three or four times already, unable to handle the climate."I can't get hold of him. All he gave me was an assistant's number and told me to go through the office if I needed anything."But she misses him. She cries until she can't breathe. I don't know what else to do. Audrey, one mother to another, please help me."And I... I just found out I'm pregnant again."A photo came through. Two lines on the test.I screenshotted all of it and forwarded it to Julian."I think that settles it. Divorce me and let me go."Or do you want her baby growing up with no father on the paperwork either?"The typing indicator sat there fo

I came down in Snowridge, the coldest city in Northmere. The second I got outside the terminal, I couldn't stop shivering.I found a little guesthouse nearby and sat by the fire until the feeling came back into me.My mood came back with it.I sipped my hot chocolate and turned my phone on.The messages came in like water through a broken dam.The screen hung for two seconds before it would load at all.Two hundred eighty-nine messages.Seventy-seven missed calls.Julian and Caleb had just about lost their minds looking for me.I only skimmed a couple.Caleb was sobbing through every single voice note."Mom, I was wrong. I'll never take anyone else's side against you again. Please, please forgive me."Don't go. I can't do this without you."Julian wasn't any better. He was crying so hard I could barely make out the words."Audrey, just answer me. One word. I'm begging you, I'm out of my mind here. I don't want a divorce. Come home and let's talk."The strange thing was,

Snow was coming down outside. In the end, Julian had Serena and Maya moved out to a single-story place past the edge of Eastcliff, while the hospital and family services reviewed what had happened. The car was strangely quiet on the way home.Caleb sat in the back with his eyes slowly filling up."Dad, I miss Mom. I think I did something bad."Julian looked at him, then back out the window at the snow."We're going home now. When we get there, you apologize to her properly."He looked down. And then he'd take Audrey out to build that snowman.Caleb nodded and nodded, and got a smile out through the tears."She'll forgive me. I know she will."But the closer they got to home, the worse the panic got in Julian's chest. They shoved the door open together."Audrey.""Mom."Nobody answered. The penthouse was empty. Even the faint clean smell of her was gone from the air.Every one of those little things she collected had been cleared out.Julian stood there like his legs h

Half an hour later, Grant wrote back."He won't take it, sir. The pastry chef was his girlfriend. She went back home yesterday. They've split up."The message landed like a small blow to the chest. He pressed his lips together and kept texting Audrey."Audrey, are you home? If your feet got frostbitten, there's ointment in the bedroom drawer."Next time Serena makes you angry, go ahead and let her have it. I won't take her side, I swear."I'm sorry, sweetheart. Just answer me when you see this. Please."Quick footsteps came down the hall.Julian's head snapped up, but it was Serena, carrying Maya.Something in him dropped, and irritation started spreading in its place."What are you doing here?"Serena gave him her most considerate smile."Maya woke up crying. She wanted to come see her brother."Maya kissed him, sweet and well behaved."Daddy, Mom brought food. I'll feed him."She carried a bowl and spoon into the room.Julian nodded, too tired to argue, and let her go
