Chapter 5

Author: Ringo
The moment my soul left my body, all the pain vanished. My spirit hovered near the shark’s body, but somehow, I couldn’t leave.

Then, Andrew got a phone call that Craig had taken Izzy on vacation. Craig had promised to help her fulfill her dreams—a trip to Disney World to see the biggest fireworks show she’d ever seen.

Meanwhile, my vital signs monitor showed nothing. Andrew thought it was just a power outage and didn’t bother checking further.

The first person to actually find my body was a fisherman on the beach. It was because, from beneath the shark’s stomach, a rotting hand had started to poke out. However, as the entire fish was wrapped in razor-sharp, reinforced wires, no one could get close.

“Oh my God, there’s a dead body!”

“Look! That’s a human leg sticking out of the shark!”

Only then did Andrew realize something was wrong. He nervously called Craig, hoping to report the situation.

At that exact moment, Craig was spinning on a carousel and laughing with Izzy. The sounds of joy and carnival music filled the air as he answered the call, completely uninterested.

“So, did she finally admit she was wrong? Is she ready to apologize?”

Andrew stammered, “N-No, sir… I think– I think your wife might already be dead. Maybe you should come back and–”

“Bullshit. If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable. We still have seven days left on this trip. Tell her to think through it. I’ll be waiting for an apology when we get back.”

Immediately after that, Craig hung up.

Andrew was caught in a dilemma. In the end, all he could do was disperse the crowd of onlookers gathering by the beach.

A few days later, Craig finally returned with Izzy in tow. He walked straight up to the shark, eyes cold and impatient.

“It’s been a whole month, and she still won’t apologize?”

Andrew stayed silent, and when Craig noticed the monitor was off, his expression darkened.

“Useless. Turn the damn thing back on. I want to see what she’s up to.”

Once the machine rebooted, however, the screen stayed blank, showing no signs of life.

Craig’s face turned grim. “What is this? Who messed with the equipment?”

Only Izzy and Andrew knew the truth. The two of them exchanged a nervous glance, neither daring to speak.

Izzy clutched Craig’s arm and said, “Craig, maybe we should go. Just let Jane cool off for a bit on her own.”

Craig sneered and shook her off.

“If we coddle her like this, she’ll think she runs the damn world! Hand me the knife. I’m cutting her out right now.”

With that, he grabbed the long blade, ignoring the horrified looks from everyone around, and sliced open the shark’s belly, hard and fast.

I watched in silence as the scene unfolded before me, and that night, I found myself in Craig’s dream. The moment I appeared in his dream, he panicked.“Jane, you finally came to see me…”I looked at Craig with a calm expression. In front of me, he was no longer the young man I once knew. Now, he was nothing more than a complete failure; he was pathetic, really. The grievance and resentment I used to feel toward him seemed to have vanished. I could clearly sense it: I no longer loved him, nor did I hate him. The only thing I felt guilty for was the baby I carried.“Craig, do you know what’s the worst thing you did?” I tilted my head, offering him a casual smile. “The worst thing you did was lock me in that shark’s belly for a whole month.”That month felt like an agonizing torment, one that made death seem like a mercy. The nitrogen inside the shark’s stomach was enough to suffocate me, yet he easily believed Izzy’s lies. Then again, Izzy had once been a college student whom I p

In the dead of night, I slipped into her dreams. I walked through a blinding white void until I was right in front of her, scaring her out of her wits.“You’re Jane, right? Y-You… don’t come near me! If you want revenge, look for Craig! He’s the one you should be after!”I sighed softly, reaching out to grab her by the throat.“But it was you who took away my water. I’m so thirsty, Izzy. Let me drink your blood…”Izzy’s eyes widened in fear as she struggled to break free from my grasp, screaming as she tried to run. However, this was a dream, and there was no escaping my grip. The next morning, the prison guard froze in shock when he saw her. There, on the bed, Izzy's eyes were wide open, her body shriveled like a dried-up corpse, as though every last drop of blood had been drained from her. I had originally planned to seek revenge on Craig, but I never expected that Isaac would be the first to find him.At that moment, Craig was locked away in a private room in the mental inst

Izzy threw a tantrum, clutching her face and shouting, "I’m carrying your child, and your wife is dead! Do you want the Greens to die out?"Craig snapped back, "Bullshit! Even if my wife is dead, I would never claim your bastard child. You’ve been passed around so many times. Who knows what kind of freak will come out of you!""You’re inhuman, Craig! I’ll kill you!"They started fighting, their struggle chaotic and wild. I watched them and couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. From their heated words, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. It turned out that the basement in our house had always been their secret meeting spot. That was where Craig had gotten Izzy pregnant. He had even promised her that I would never be allowed to have a child. Once their baby was born, it would be adopted in my name.Well, wasn’t that just perfect?I clenched my fists, my lips curling into a bitter smile. What injustice it was to have died at the hands of those two in the end.

Watching Craig in such a broken state, I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.“Craig, who are you trying to fool by acting this way?”However, Craig couldn’t hear me at all.Soon enough, my family rushed to the scene. My mother was in tears, while my father nearly had a heart attack. My older brother, Peter, who had always been so protective of me, was so furious he looked ready to kill Craig on the spot. He even swore that he’d rather go to prison than let Craig and Izzy off. Tears welled up in my eyes. I remembered when I used to love Craig so much, my family had always disapproved of our relationship.Mom and Dad warned me that Craig didn’t seem like the type to settle down. Peter, too, always said there were plenty of better men in the city and that he’d find someone better for me.As stubborn as I was back then, I was determined to marry him, even if it meant cutting ties with my family. I never imagined that only a few short years later, I’d lose my life over it.Looki

The cops brought Craig and Izzy into an interrogation room and sat them down face to face. Craig’s eyes were bloodshot as he stared her down. “That night, the one who got assaulted by those thugs… Was it really you?”Izzy’s face went ghost-white. She forced a few pitiful tears down her cheeks and tried to act fragile.“Craig, why are you bringing that up now? That night left me traumatized. It's a scar I can never erase–”Before she could finish, Craig slammed his hand on the table, lunging forward to grip her by the throat.“Cut the bullshit and tell me the truth! Or I swear to God, I’ll make sure you’ll wish you were dead for the rest of your life!”A cop had to shout to stop him. If they hadn’t intervened, he might’ve choked her out right then and there. Only then did fear finally set into Izzy’s eyes. Trembling, she started to confess. As it turned out, she wasn’t just an innocent bystander back then—she was part of the setup. She’d always been a scholarship student but ne

With a deep, muffled boom, the built-up gas inside the shark’s belly finally exploded.“Ahh!”“Run! The shark’s blowing up!”Screams erupted as people scattered in every direction. Rotting flesh and thick slime blasted everywhere, and the stench smelled like someone had set off a biological weapon. It was absolutely vile. The shark had been bloated for days from trapped nitrogen gases. When it finally burst, the explosion was catastrophic, and along with the blast, my limbs were hurled out.Slime splattered across Craig’s face, ruining his designer suit. However, the man who was always meticulous about appearances didn’t even notice the mess. He just stood there, stunned.“Jane?”My decayed flesh had torn apart in the blast, leaving behind only a grotesque skeletal frame, worse than something from a horror movie. The onlookers were horrified, and a few fishermen had called the cops.Craig stumbled forward, staring at the remains.“No… No, this isn’t right. This can’t be Jane

The screen on the monitor flickered slightly. I saw Craig walking toward the massive shark where I was trapped. There was no one else around, which meant I had a chance to call out to him and beg for help. I opened my mouth, but my throat was so parched from days without water that all I could manage was a low, guttural rasp—something more beast than human.Craig turned toward me with a cold smirk.“Jane, I know you can hear me. Just admit online that you’re nothing but a cheap, promiscuous woman. Get down on your knees and apologize to Izzy. Do that, and I’ll forgive you.” He paused for a beat, then added in a low voice, “You can’t blame me. Izzy was gang-raped by a bunch of thugs back then because she was trying to save me. She kept it quiet all these years to protect my reputation. I owe her my life.“Jane, if you just apologize sincerely and promise not to mess around with other men anymore, I’ll let you come back. We’ll live a normal life again. Once Izzy graduates, I’ll sen

My heart sank again.I wanted to tell Craig this was his baby. If he didn’t believe me, he could go ahead and get a paternity test. However, no words came out of my mouth. My throat was dry as dust. Days without water had left my mouth bone-dry and tasteless. I was dying of thirst. Desperate, I begged, using the last bit of strength I had to bang against the inside of the shark’s belly.“Please, Craig, let me out…”Unfortunately, my voice didn’t carry—not through the thick, suffocating walls of flesh. One of the fishermen couldn’t take it anymore. “Mr. Craig, there’s barely any air in there. There’s no water either. She’s gonna die if this keeps up!”Looking pitiful, Izzy butt in. “I looked it up. A person can survive in a shark for a month, and I’ve been sending her water every day. She drank every last drop! Jane must be mad at me and lying to Craig on purpose. That woman is manipulative!”That was what she said, but I’d seen the truth through the surveillance camera. Every
