Chapter 1 An Answer

I tightened my grip around my phone. My unsent text still sat in the chat window, but my heart had already frozen over.

Linda, my colleague, patted my shoulder. "What are you spacing out for, Wendy?"

My mind was a chaotic mush, but it quieted the moment Linda saw Chris.

"Whoa, that's Mr. Lawson, our technical partner. And that's his wife! I came here for work three years ago and ran into their wedding! They even gave me candy!"

"They got married three years ago?"

So… the long-distance relationship and the last eight years meant nothing to him? I blinked quickly and refused to let the oncoming tears spill.

Oblivious to my tears, Linda smiled and continued, "Yeah, and his wife used to be his secretary. They worked together all day. Can't believe he came to pick her up, even when he's busy."

Another colleague chimed in, "You have no idea how much he loves his wife. He and his wife handpicked her gowns, the venue, and the rings. They took 18 sets of wedding photos, and he didn't even get annoyed!"

I listened in stunned silence, my eyes on the couple sharing a warm embrace. Something had cut my heart open. I could barely hear anything they were saying. It just hurt so much.

I knew he was a busy man. I was in Bluelis, while he was in Imperia. We were separated for more than a thousand miles. Even worse, I couldn't go to Imperia.

Fortunately, Chris would video call me. He would patiently coax me and soothe my worries when the dark circles under his eyes were very visible.

"I'll go to you once my work is done, Wendy."

He didn't break his promise. The tickets from Imperia to Bluelis piled up, but he never stopped returning to Imperia either.

One time, he worked overtime until midnight for seven days straight, and he still took time to celebrate my birthday.

The candles burned, and his eyes shone like stars. "Happy birthday, Wendy."

My heart was filled with devotion back then. I was looking forward to ending this long-distance part of the relationship and marrying Chris.

Yet, he kept dissuading me and saying, "Give me some time. I'd like for my career to settle down a little so we can have a home."

'Some time' turned into three years. He couldn't even come over when I had gotten into a car accident and was hospitalized because he was swamped with work. I told myself it was fine and got back to work after I healed up.

I didn't even have the time to tell him about the miscarriage I had suffered during the car crash. I did all this for the beautiful future we envisioned. Unbeknownst to me, he had given his promise to someone else.

The words of my colleagues rang in my ears, "He would still give his wife a bouquet of flowers no matter how busy he gets."

Linda stopped her praise and turned to me. "I thought your boyfriend's in Imperia? Maybe we'll get to be at your wedding this year!"

I pulled a smile and turned around, trying to control my breathing. "Maybe." Then, I saw Chris leading the girl into a car, and I blurted, "I have something to handle. You guys get to the company without me. I'll catch up!"

I ran toward the airport's exit before my colleagues could say anything. The first thing that hit me was the winds of Imperia and the snow that came with it.

They were biting, freezing my whole body. It wasn't until I had entered a cab that I realized my scalding tears had drenched my collar.

"Follow that car," I said, my voice raspier than I thought.

Snow was howling outside the window. I had imagined watching snowfall with Chris many, many times, but my heart wasn't in it now.

My vision was blurry, and I only had one thought ringing in my head. I wanted answers.

After filing lawsuits against both Chris and Nancy, I invited Jace out for a meal while we waited for the case to progress. After all, things had gone so smoothly this time largely because of his help. He had done so much for me, like tracking down evidence and finding the right people.Jace leaned back in his chair, his tone teasing. "So, Ms. Gray, I hear congratulations are in order. You can finally relax now, right?"Heat crept up my face as I smiled in gratitude. "It's thanks to you. Otherwise, Chris and his influence would've been enough to silence me and sweep the case under the rug."I had been promoted to technical director of the department ever since I returned from my business trip to Imperia. And as for Jace's real identity… Honestly, I had my suspicions long ago. He was clearly more than just an ordinary employee, but I hadn't called him out on it. Yet, he revealed it without hesitation. He blinked at me, a hint of mischief twinkling in his eyes. Chris' expression darkened. However, Nancy paid it no mind, her composure completely unraveling as she raved like a madwoman. "Don't you dare say you never had feelings for me. I didn't force you. It was your choice to hurt Wendy Gray. "You're the one who caused her death. You're the reason why she doesn't even have a body to bu—"Chris set the frightened Eugene down, then shot his hand out and clamped it around Nancy's throat.Just as he was about to speak, she cut him off again. "You coward! You're the murderer here, not me! You killed her! Admit it!"His gaze turned colder, his voice low and deliberate. "She's not dead."Nancy's face had already turned purple from the lack of oxygen, but she still managed to choke out a mocking laugh. "So what if she isn't? We both know that she'll never forgive you for the rest of her life, even if she's alive!"Just then, the doorbell rang.Chris shoved her aside, his brows knitting together as he strode toward the door. While the internet was busy buzzing about Chris, I had just regained consciousness in the hospital. And now, I was even being spoon-fed a meal my colleague, Jace Lexington, had brought me.The moment I moved my hand, a sharp, lingering pain shot up my arm. It was from the burn injuries left behind by the explosion. The spot on my wrist, where my watch should have sat, was now bare. It was rather symbolic as it was just like the love that had been taken from me. That was because anything of value, which included the watch, had been stripped away by the kidnappers. When I thought back to that moment, when I had my brush with death, my heart was immediately plunged with blazing hatred for Chris.Linda, who had come to visit me, let out a long sigh. "It's a good thing Jace noticed something was off that day. You hadn't replied to any of our messages for hours. It wasn't like you. He suspected something had happened and went to look for you."Taylor, who was standing next to her, nodd

Chris shot up from his seat, causing his chair to screech against the ground. His voice shook as he demanded, "What do you mean, she's gone missing?"The man answered carefully, "It had been raining for some time before we took her back to the mountains. The road was slippery and wet. The tires of the car she was in skidded, so…"The other man trailed off. Chris breathed heavily on his end as the man continued, "The car exploded not too long after it toppled. Our men all died, and her body wasn't found, but she…"Chris interjected solemnly, "Find her. I'm sure she's fine. I don't care how much money it takes. Find her."He was probably trying to convince himself that I survived even though the chances were slim. After all, not only was everyone in that car confirmed to be dead, but I had also been hogtied by his subordinates at the time. Even if the explosion hadn't killed me, I couldn't have survived for long in the mountains. The guy on the other end fell silent before gruntin
